Book A New Commentary on Genesis Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A New Commentary on Genesis Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Franz Delitzsch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Commentary on Genesis, Vol. 2 Two solemn revelations open in ch. Xv. The second section of the life of Abraham. The narrative falls into two halves. It is impossible to regard all from beginning to end as occurring in vision. For (1) if one revelation takes place at night, or at least with a transposition to night, the other is made in the day, and indeed at eventicle, the sun being at ver. 12 about to set, and at ver. 17 actually set. And (2) the account of Abraham's believing reception of the promise of a posterity numeious as the stars of heaven ver. 6 separates what pre ceded from What follows, which though it appears from the 16x mm, 7 a, to have immediately succeeded, has yet its own special introduction. Dillmann here carries analysis even farther beyond the bounds of the discernible than Wellhausen does. The safest criterion from Gen. I. To ex. Vi., and one which must only be relinquished for cogent reasons, is the Divine names. The use of these is in both halves of ch. Xv. The same. In both mm is the prevailing one, and With it occurs once in each rm rm, to be read according to the punctuation d?sn figs, a combination of Divine names Which, thus written, is unusual. This mm ms, here twice used, gives to this historical picture in its two departments, as to the prophetic image, Isa. 1. 4 - 9, where it is four times used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on Genesis, Vol. 2 It is no wonder that the United States Census of 1890, the latest reliable statistics on the subject, gave the number of Lutheran communicants using only English in this English land at General Synod United Synod South General Council Ohio Synod 287; Missouri Synod after 150 years of work. Our good German and Scandinavian parents, in the light of these figures, need not fear loosing many members to purely English churches. Reading Luther in German, Swedish, Norwegian and English will bring better results to old and young than if read only in one language. The Church of the Reformation is not one-tongued, but many tongued. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The wrestling having lasted long enough, without Jacob being conquered, the unnamed says, 27a: Let me go, for the day breaketh. But Jacob, divining and feeling that it is a Divine Being whose attack he has had to sustain, keeps hold of the man and cries out, according to Hos. xii. 5, with tears and supplications, 276: I will not let thee go unless thou bless me. Then the marvellous Being says to him, ver. 28: What is thy name? And he said: Jacob. The question is only preparatory to the communication which follows, ver. 2 9: Thy name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast fought with Elohim and with men, and hast prevailed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Expositor and People's Commentary, Vol. 2 The book of Genesis, although only containing fifty chapters, yet comprises the history ranging over years according to the common computation, or years according to the Septuagint, which is also adopted by Bishop Hales, who, how ever, stands alone in this respect. Some writers suppose that Moses wrote the book in the land of Midian, when he tended the flocks of his father-in-law in the wilderness; but it is far more likely that it was not written until after the promulgation of the law in the wilderness; this is, however, a matter of no consequence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis, Vol. 2: Expounded in a Series of Discourses The divine testimony concerning Esau's state of mind towards his brother Jacob - his bitter hatred and bloody purpose - is the most authentic commentary upon his previous conduct; - "Esau hated Jacob, because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob" (ver. 41)? Surely if Esau had really been seeking either true repentance, or any spiritual blessing which the godly sorrow of true repentance can command, he would have been humbled for his own sin before God, and anxious to have a share in the covenant-blessing on any terms that God might appoint. And towards his brother, he would have cherished such a sentiment as the oracle from the first should have awakened; and now much more after even his too partial father had acquiesced in it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliography contains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Genesis

Download or read book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Genesis written by James Gracey Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Genesis: With a New Translation In introducing to the American public Dr. Murphy's Commentary on Genesis, I would commend it as a timely antidote to much of the negative and destructive criticism upon the Pentateuch which has so largely obtained in Germany, and of late in England also, rather than as a complete solution of the many and vexed questions in language, in science, and in history which pertain to the so-called "Books of Moses." The merits of Dr. Murphy's work are a nice critical analysis of the text, a candid consideration of all alleged difficulties, a common-sense view of the principles of interpretation, and a philosophical clearness and comprehensiveness in the statement of inference or of doctrine. It consists of an exact literal translation of such passages as contain either verbal or grammatical difficulties, and of a critical and exegetical commentary, based upon the grammatical construction of the text, and framed in view of the best lights of modern criticism and science. Thus, in the narratives of the creation and the deluge, our author unfolds step by step the literal meaning of the sacred writer, and evolves from the Hebrew a sense which well accords with the facts of astronomical and geological science.
