Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Surgery: For the Instruction of Practitioners and Students of Surgery Many practitioners who have honored the author by visiting his clinic have requested that a work on Clinical Surgery be written by him, giving as nearly as possible the methods adopted in actual practice. This request has been met by the statement that the author lays no claim to the invention of a single new operation, nor has he produced a new or modified instrument, but has contented himself with applying to his surgical work what seemed best in the practice of the surgeons of the past and present, many times without knowing by whom the various methods were modified before they were accepted and used by him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hospital Gazette and Archives of Clinical Surgery, 1877, Vol. 2: A Semi-Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery IT would conduce greatly to a better understanding of the action of neurotics if it were borne in mind that they are agents which in each case affect only certain nervous functions. There is no neurotic in existence which affects the dei'viiiis system, that is, the whole of it, unless in the one way of causing death. In opium, for example, we have a drug which specifically influences more nervous functions, perhaps, than any other one agent that can be. Named; and yet, should we enumerate them all, they would constitute but a small number of the great multitude oi nervous operations. The blade of Maisonneuve which had been passed, could only cut up to and yet it had been easily followed by a solid steel sound number 31. The bare fact, however, that cutting had been done, more or less, would warrant the inference that the obstruction was organic and had been removed by the 2: blade of M. Maisonneuve. It was a matter ofgreat regret that a more prolonged trial with a large sound had not been made before resorting to the knife, but this was now unavailing, and the question of the true nature of the obstruction was necessarily left in doubt. The operation was completed at 3 p. M. Of the 29th of October, having occupied one and a-half hours. A suppository of quin. Sulph. Gr. X and morph. Sulph.
