Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Biographical Dictionary, of 3000 Cotemporary Public Characters, British and Foreign, of All Ranks and Professions, Vol. 1: Part II Aacnnuxs of Austria, born in 1771. This prince com manded with glory in the revolutionary war against France. By great skill, perseverance, and activity, he repelled the French armies, at a period when their energy and numbers made them formidable to a degree unexampled in modern times. He began his military ca reer under the prince of Cobourg, in Brabant, in 1793, when he commanded the advanced guard of his army. He distinguished himself particularly at the battle of Nerwinde. He was then made governor and captain general of the Low Countries, grand cross of the order of Maria Theresa, and field marshal of the empire. In 1796, after the death of General Clairfait, he took the command of the Austrian army on the Rhine. In the Month of June that year he had several severe engagements with the French under General Moreau near Rastadt, in which, though he was defeated, he gained great glory. The army on the Lower Rhine, under General Wartensleben, being beaten back by Jourdan, the archduke left a part of his ar my to keep Moreau in check, marched with the rest to as sist Wartensleben, and forced Jourdan to recross the Rhine, after having defeated him at Amberg and Wurtzbourg. The fine retreat of Moreau was the consequence of these victories. The siege of Kehl, which fortress he took, followed; but the time lost in it enabled Bonaparte to make great progress in Italy. The year following he went to attack Bonaparte in Italy, where, though he had not equal success, he placed the French army in such a position that Bonaparte consented to peace, the preliminaries of which were signed at Leoben. Called upon again to command the army, in 1799, after the congress at Rastadt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Venanzio Rauzzini and the Birth of a New Style in English Singing

Download or read book Venanzio Rauzzini and the Birth of a New Style in English Singing written by Brianna E. Robertson-Kirkland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the eighteenth century, the one-to-one singing lesson has been the most common method of delivery. The scenario allows the teacher to familiarise and individualise the lesson to suit the needs of their student; however, it can also lead to speculation about what is taught. More troubling is the heightened risk of gossip and rumour with the private space generating speculation about the student–teacher relationship. Venanzio Rauzzini (1746–1810), an Italian castrato living in England who became a highly sought-after singing master, was particularly susceptible since his students tended to be women, whose moral character was under more scrutiny than their male counterparts. Even so in 1792, The Bath Chronicle proclaimed the Italian castrato: 'the father of a new style in English singing'. Branding Rauzzini as a founder of an English style was not an error, but indicative of deep-seated anxieties about the Italian invasion on England’s musical culture. This book places teaching at the centre of the socio-historical narrative and provides unique insight into musical culture. Using a microhistory approach, this study is the first to focus in on the impact of teaching and casts new light on issues of celebrity culture, gender and nationalism in Georgian England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stresses the interrelatedness of knowledge by extricating models that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries. For example, science can find models from the technology and semantic field of music, music can find its models from the technology and semantic field of science, and each domain may be guided by a philosophical or metaphysical principle - thus, the title of the book. But the book itself is structured as a mirror image of its title. Chapters 1-6 provide instances of the role of music in such domains as epistemology and logic, as well as in the early modern sciences of developmental biology, continuum mechanics, anatomy and physiological psychology, whereas Chapters 7-10 provide instances of what some other domains of knowledge have given back to the philosophy and theory of music.
