Book excerpt: This story of inspiration and determination is based on life of Val Melvin. The story includes his birth, his operations, places he had lived, and his education at the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf in Wilson, NC. He was born without ears and without a lower mandible (jaw), and he had a difficulty breathing. His doctors inserted a trach. His parents never gave up and learned how to care for him before taking him home. Val's parents realized that their young son was deaf and had to learn sign language to communicate. When Val was six, he was enrolled at ENCSD. The teachers and staff helped me learn and grow. He has fond memories at ENCSD like his teacher Mary Sue Humphrey forcing him eat pimento cheese sandwiches. He remained in ENCSD until he graduated in 1988. Val had many operations when he was young, and it continued until 2002. He moved to Raleigh to finish college and to graduate from Wake Technical Community College in 1995. He later worked at the Department of Revenue in Raleigh for fourteen years. Val is currently a volunteer at the library of ENCSD where he grew up. He is a Christian and attends the Temple of Pentecost. He loves spending time with his family and friends at ENCSD. He loves swimming and spends summers at White Lake, NC.

Book Living in the Hope of Glory

Download or read book Living in the Hope of Glory written by Adolphe Monod and published by P & R Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in the Hope of Glory (originally Les Adieux, or Farewells) has been blessing readers for almost 150 years. Originally these were a series of talks given by Adolphe Monod, a renowned pastor in the Reformed Church of France, to groups of his family and friends. They met in his bedroom each Sunday to partake of the Lord's Supper during the last six months of his life as he suffered from terminal cancer. But this is not a book about dying. It is a book about living whole-heartedly for Christ and living so as to have no regrets at life's end. A week before his death he said, I have a Savior He has freely saved me through his shed blood. ...All my righteous acts, all my works which have been praised, all my preaching...is in my eyes only filthy rags. A brief biography of Monod has been added to this edition to acquaint modern readers with this extraordinary man.

Download or read book The Glory of Life written by Michael Kumpfmüller and published by Haus Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aftermath of Franz Kafka’s love affair with Dora Diamant is legend: refusing to honor his instructions to destroy his work when he died, Diamant saved Kafka’s writings and letters that were in her possession. These were later taken by the Nazis and are still being sought today. Her importance for Kafka’s literary legacy makes their all-too-brief relationship even more intriguing. Set over the course of his last year, The Glory of Life is compelling fictional re-imagining of this fragile, tender romance. In July 1923, Kafka is convalescing by the Baltic Sea when he meets Diamant and they fall in love. He is forty years old and dying of tuberculosis; she is twenty-five and seems to him the essence of life. After a tentative first meeting, the indecisive Kafka moves with Diamant to Berlin, a city in the throes of political upheaval, rising anti-Semitism, and the turmoil of Weimar-era hyperinflation. As his tuberculosis advances, they are forced to leave the city for the Kierling Sanatorium near Vienna, a move that threatens the paradise they have created. The first of Kumpfmüller’s novels to appear in English after his acclaimed The Adventures of a Bed Salesman, The Glory of Life is a meticulously researched and poignant portrait of one of the most enduring authors in world literature. Beautifully crafted, this book is an evocative rumination on the power of love and friendship.

Book The Ladies Repository

Download or read book The Ladies Repository written by and published by . This book was released on 1843 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.

Book Strange Glory

Download or read book Strange Glory written by Charles Marsh and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Christianity Today 2015 Book Award in History/Biography Shortlisted for the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for Biography In the decades since his execution by the Nazis in 1945, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German pastor, theologian, and anti-Hitler conspirator, has become one of the most widely read and inspiring Christian thinkers of our time. With unprecedented archival access and definitive scope, Charles Marsh captures the life of this remarkable man who searched for the goodness in his religion against the backdrop of a steadily darkening Europe. From his brilliant student days in Berlin to his transformative sojourn in America, across Harlem to the Jim Crow South, and finally once again to Germany where he was called to a ministry for the downtrodden, we follow Bonhoeffer on his search for true fellowship and observe the development of his teachings on the shared life in Christ. We witness his growing convictions and theological beliefs, culminating in his vocal denunciation of Germany’s treatment of the Jews that would put him on a crash course with Hitler. Bringing to life for the first time this complex human being—his substantial flaws, inner torment, the friendships and the faith that sustained and finally redeemed him—Strange Glory is a momentous achievement.

Book A TRUE INTERPRETATION OF THE WITCH OF ENDOR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Have been desired by several Friends, to set forth the Interpretation concerning the Witch of Endor and King Saul; how it may be understood how she raised Samuel, and how Familiar Spirits came to be procured, and with what Power they do such strange Things. Many Enemies also have objected this Place, to prove that Spirits may be raised without Bodies, and that Spirits may walk, or be happy or miserable without Bodies: Though I have given an Answer in Discourse to these Doubts and Questions, but few can retain in their Memory what is spoken in Discourse; therefore I thought it convenient and necessary to set it forth in Print, for the Information and Satisfaction of many Friends who desire it, and for the Convincement of all Gain-sayers. And let them seriously read it over without Prejudice, and they may see this Point clearly opened, which hath laid hid this many Hundred Years, with other Places of Scriptures opened, which many have objected against this Interpretation, and all those Places of Scripture that is commonly brought, or doth most seem to hold forth, that Spirits may be without Bodies, are likewise opened and expounded in short in this Treatise, as followeth.
