He is (aid to have imbibed his ardpur of zeal by read ing the legends of the faints; though fome have denied that he knew the ufe of letters. But whether he read, or had there things read to him, he certainly conceived an ardour of reli gions aetivity, which has not often been equalled. He had no fooner received his cure than he went to hang up his arms over the altar of the blefied Virgin at Montferrat, to Whom he devoted his fervices on March 24, I 522: for he carried the laws of chivalry to his religious Obfervances. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 9 of 15: Containing an Historical and Critical Account of the Lives and Writings of the Most Eminent Persons in Every Nation Jones (Inigo), the celebrated English architect, was born about 1572, in the neighbourhood of St. Paul's, London; of which city his father, Mr. Ignatius Jones, was a citizen, and by trade a clothworker. At a proper age, it is said, he put his son apprentice to a joiner, a business that requires some skill in drawing; and in that respect suited well with our architects inclination, which naturally led him to the art of designing. Genius concurred with inclination; he distinguished himself early by the extraordinary progress he made in those arts, and was particularly noticed for his skill in landscape-painting. These talents recommended him to William earl of Pembroke, at whose expence he travelled over Italy, and the politer parts of Europe; saw whatever was recommended by its antiquity or value; and from these plans formed his own observations, which, upon his return home, he perfected by study. But, before that, the improvements he made abroad gave such an eclat to his reputation throughout Europe, that Christian IV. king of Denmark sent for him from Venice, which was the chief place of his residence, and made him his architect-general. He had been some time possessed of this honourable poll, when that prince, whose sister Anne had married James I. made a visit to England in 1606; and our architect, being desirous to return to his native country, took that opportunity of coming home in the train of his Danish majesty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 6 of 15 Euler (Leonard) was born at Basil, on the 14th of April 1707, [A]; he was the son of Paul Euler, and of Margaret Brucker (of a family illustrious in literature), and spent the first year of his life at the village of Richen, of which place his father was Protestant minister. Being intended for the church, his father, who had himself studied under James Bernouilli, taught him man mathematics, with a view to their proving the ground-work of his other studies, and in hopes that they would turn out a noble and useful secondary occupation. But they were destined to become a principal one; and Euler, assisted and perhaps secretly encouraged by John Bernouilli, who easily discovered that he would be the greatest scholar he should ever educate, soon declared his intention of devoting his life to that pursuit. This intention the wife father did not thwart, but the son did not so blindly adhere to it, as not to connect with it a more than common improvements in every other kind of useful learning, insomuch that in his latter days men often wondered how with such a superiority in one branch, he could have been so near to eminence in all the rest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 7 of 15 Gesner (Conrad), an eminent scholar, physician, and philosopher, was born at Zurich in Switzerland in 1516, where he also received the first rudiments of learning. He discovered great facility of genius; but the circumstances of his father would not allow him to make his son a scholar, and he was about to discontinue his studies, when Ammien, professor of Latin and eloquence at Zurich, took him to his own house, and charged himself with the care of his education, By the death of his father, he was a second time reduced to great extremities, and fell into a dropsical disorder. On the recovery of his health, he resolved to travel, and seek his fortune. He went to Strasburg, where he made some progress in the hebrew language; and, the civil wars of Switzerland having subsided, he was allowed a pension from the academy of Zurich, to enable him to make the tour of France. He accordingly went to Paris, accompanied by John Frisius, the early friend of his youth, and partner of his studies. From Paris he returned to Strasburg, whence he was invited by the university of Zurich, to preside over a school. Here he married, but, finding his appointment inadequate to the maintenance of a family, he was obliged to seek for other resources. From his childhood he had a great propensity to study physic, and he now devoted all the time he could spare from his school to books of medicine. At length he left in disgust his situation at Zurich, and proceeded to Basil, where he employed his time in reading the greek physicians in their own language, till he was made greek professor at Lausanne. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 8 of 15 Heath (Benjamin), a lawyer of eminence, and town-clerk of Exeter, was a celebrated scholar and an author. He wrote, 1. "An Essay towards a demonstrative Proof of the Divine Existence, Unity, and Attributes; to which is premised, a short Defence of the Argument commonly called, a priori, 1740." This pamphlet was dedicated to Dr. Oliver of Bath, and is to be ranked amongst the ablest defences of Dr. Clarke's, or rather Mr. Howe's, hypothesis; for it appears to be taken from Howe's "Living Temple." 2. "The Cafe of the County of Devon with respect to the Consequences of the new Excise Duty on Cyder and Perry. Published by the direction of the Committee appointed at a General Meeting of that County to superintend the Application for the Repeal of that Duty, 1763," 4to. To this representation of the Circumstances peculiar to Devonshire, the repeal of the act is greatly to be ascribed. The piece indeed was considered as so well-timed a service to the public, that Mr. Heath received some honourable notice on account of it at a general meeting of the county. 3. "Notae five Lectiones ad Tragicorum Graecorum veterum, aeschyli, &c. 1752," 4to; a work which places the author's learning and critical skill in a very conspicuous light: a principal object of which was to restore the metre of the Grecian tragic poets. It is highly valued by all found critics of our own and foreign countries. The fame solidity of judgement apparent in the preceding, distinguished the author's last production; 4. "A Revisal of Shakspeare's d104, wherein the alterations introduced into it by the more modern editors and critics are particularly considered, 1765," 8vo. It appears from the lift of Oxford graduates, that Mr. Benjamin Heath was created D. C. L. by diploma, March 31, 1762. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 15 of 15: Containing an Historical and Critical Account of the Lives and Writings of the Most Eminent Persons in Every Nation Tollius (Jacobus), a physician and very learned man, was a native of Ingra, in the territory of Utrecht; and taught the belles lettres in his own country with great reputation and profit for some time. In 1684, the marquis of Brandenburg appointed him professor of eloquence and the Greek tongue. He made several journeys into different parts of Germany, into Hungary, and Italy; of which he has given some account in a posthumous work, published under the title of "Epistolae itinerariae," by Henninius, at Amsderdam, 1700, in 4to. It is said there are some useful and curious things on these epistles. Tollius was an editor of two antient authors, of "Asonius, cum notis variorum, 1671," 8vo; and of "Langinus, 1694," 4to, with a Latin version in the same page, and Boileau's French version in the opposite. He was a critic of more learning than judgement, as the title of the following work may shew: "Fortuita sacra, in quibus praeter critica nonnulla tota fabularis historia Graeca, Ph nicia, AEgyptiaca, ad chymian pertinere asseritur, 1687," in 8vo. He pushedthis extravagant notion so far as to seek for the secrets of chymistry and the philosopher's stone in the fables of Paganism. This does not shew a very sound judgement; yet there is a great deal of learning, and some curious things, in his book. He died in 1696. He had brother, named Cornelius Tollius, who was also a very learned man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 4 of 15 Cicero (Marcus Tullius), was one of the greatest men of antiquity, whether we consider him as an orator, a statement, or a philosopher. He was born Jan. 3, in the 647th year of Rome, about 107 years before Christ. His mother's name was Helvia, who was rich and well descended. As to his father's family, nothing was delivered of it but in extremes: which is not to be wondered at in the history of a man, whose life was so exposed to envy, as Cicero's, and who fell a victim at last to the power of his enemies. Some derive his descent from kings, other from mechanics: but the truth, as it commonly happens is such cases, lay between both: for his family, though it had never borne any of the great offices of the republic, was yet very ancient and honourable; of principal distinction and nobility in that part of Italy in which it resided; and of equestrian rank, from its first admission to the freedom of Rome. The place of his birth was Arpinum; a city anciently of the Samnites, now part of the kingdom of Naples. It had the honour also of producing the great C. Marius; which gave occasion to Pompey to say in a public speech, that Rome was indebted to this corporation for two citizen, who had, each in his turn, preserved it from ruin. The territory of Arpinum was rude and mountainous, to which Cicero applies Homer's description of Ithaca: 'Tis rough indeed, yet breeds a generous race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New and General Biographical Dictionary, Vol. 8 of 12 Kepler (John), the greatest astronomer perhaps that any age has produced, was born in the Wiel in the dutch of Wirtemberg, the 27th Dec. 1751. His father, Henry Kepler, was descended from a family, which had raised themselves under the emperors by their military services, and was himself an officer of rank in the army; but afterwards, experiencing ill fortune, was obliged to sell all he had, and support himself and his family by keeping a public-house. He died in 1590, and left his son John to take what care of himself he could. His education had been hitherto neglected, as may easily be imagined; but, having a very great genius, and as great a desire to cultivate it, he entered upon his studies in philosophy at Tubingen, immediately upon his father's death, and, two years after, pursued the mathematics in the same university, under the famous Michael Moestlin. He made so great progress, and became so famous, that in 1503 he was invited to Gratz in Styria, to teach the mathematics there. He then applied himself entirely to astronomy, and published from time to time several works, the principal of which shall be mentioned immediately. In 1597, he entered into the married state, which at first created him great uneasiness, from a dispute which arose about his wife's fortune; and, the year after, he was banished from Gratz on account of his religion, but afterwards recalled, and restored to his former dignity.
