In order to understand and address the effects of natural and anthropogenic forces in the coastal zone, a holistic multidisciplinary framework is required to account for the interconnectivity of processes within the system. The foundation of this framework is accurate geospatial informationâ€"information that is depicted on maps and charts. A Geospatial Framework for the Coastal Zone National Needs identifies and suggests mechanisms for addressing national needs for spatial information in the coastal zone. It identifies high priority needs, evaluates the potential for meeting those needs based on the current level of effort, and suggests steps to increase collaboration and ensure that the nation's need for spatial information in the coastal zone is met in an efficient and timely manner.

Book excerpt: It is now broadly recognized that Great Lakes resource management programs must be based on an ecosystems approach. Such a holistic, systems-level approach identifies key driving processes that operate at different, often hierarchical, scales to influence selected ecosystem characteristics; for example, processes that sustain healthy and interconnected aquatic habitat mosaics. The Lakewide Management Plans (LaMPs) within the Great Lakes region are examples of broadscale, collaborative resource management efforts that require a sound ecosystems approach. Each LaMP has different endpoint goals, against which progress can be measured through time as specific management actions are implemented in selected areas by particular agencies. Yet, the LaMP process currently lacks a holistic framework that allows these individual actions to be planned and understood within the broader context of the Great Lakes ecosystem. This paper addresses two objectives that are meant to introduce and illustrate the use of an ecosystem-based framework for regional-scale resource management.

Book excerpt: The text is intended as supplementary reading for fisheries workers, especially in developing countries, who do not always have ready access to current literature on applied marine ecology. An attempt is made to develop a wide range of concepts in a form that will hopefully encourage their incorporation into a practical, decision-making context. The food web and associated trophic interactions form the principal theme, in an approach that gives equal emphasis to qualitative, as well as the less easily measured quantitative considerations. An attempt is made to illustrate the consequences of the aggregated nature of much of marine production, as well as the subsequent dispersal of production in space and time, and how these processes affect the potential for economic harvest of commercial components of the ecosystem. Separate sections touch on environmental influences on production, relevant spatial and temporal scales for ecosystem analysis, life history strategies, diversity and stability, the concepts of the ecological niche, the community and the assemblage, and outline some first steps towards quantifiying production in marine ecosystems. Different approaches to representing trophic and other interactions are discussed, with examples from the literature. Reference is made to several ecological subsystems, in order to illustrate the main concepts presented. These include the mangrove ecosystem, the arcto-boreal macrophyte community, a mediterranean demersal fish assemblage, and the oceanic ecosystem associated with high seas tuna stocks. In practical terms, it is concluded that the first and simplest approach to multispecies resource management is not necessarily the manipulation of individual food web components, but the identification, mapping and conservation of critical habitats, especially centres of local production, and their associated ecological dissipation structures.
