Book excerpt: David Bell has been painting ships and the sea for more than forty years. From smacks to schooners, from whalers to warships his investigations have taken him on a remarkable pictorial journey through the history of the sea. The accuracy of his painting is infused with that vital ingredient 'artistic vision'. Finding inspiration in all sorts of areas through time and place he has drawn on his outstanding talent as an artist and his tremendous experience of the sea during his time and travels around the world as a navigator. This book is a product of David Bells' two passions, painting and maritime history. It charts his journey through time from Elizabethan galleons, to the last days of the trawling industry, picking out the ships whose line and design captivates him and the mariners for whom he has the utmost admiration. This odyssey has been illustrated and annotated by him to produce a book that will be coveted by anyone with an interest in the art of the sea. He has linked text with paintings inspired by artistic vision to create a book which is not only fascinating to read but also a pleasure to behold, an aesthetically stunning marriage of words and pictures.

Book excerpt: Perhaps the most intense, edge-of-your-seat sci-fi novel to come along in a long time, The One is a colossus, a giant scale, imagination expanding epic. Adventure, drama, hard tech, powered armor, starship battles, armies, heroism, romance, political intrigue across multiple star systems, rich interstellar history, ancient races, deadly aliens, eye-opening discovery, heart-stopping action - it's all here. Careful, or you might flinch. Ian Rhames, U.S. Marine turned assassin, stumbles across an alien scout ship and its crew, who have themselves stumbled across the Earth. In a bizarre twist, Ian finds no choice but to attack the deadly aliens in order to survive. With the help of a young girl, a prisoner of the aliens, her presence nearly as strange as theirs, Ian wins the vessel. And suddenly he has the unthinkable: control of an alien starship. From this beginning the action charges forward, as does the scope of The One. Ian uncovers an amazing history, dating back over six thousand years on Earth alone - nearly 70 million all told. Dozens of human worlds across the galaxy, long ago separated from the Earth, are in a fight to uncover their past. And they may have found it. Now the long forgotten Earth is in jeopardy as these interstellar governments, alien races, and, indeed, several powerful forces vie for the discovery of what they believe will set them free. A world hidden thousands of millennia ago by the last truly galactic race. A world known simply as the Tomb of Kings. And so Ian finds himself at the center of an epic struggle, fleets of starships and advanced armies battling for dominance, manipulative politicos playing a deadly game of chess...all the while off stage other, more sinister forces cast their hands. But one man can find within himself immense strength. One man can lead the many, and in so doing change the course of history. For more information, go to sagaofages.com.

Book A Star to Sail Her By

Download or read book A Star to Sail Her By written by Alex Ellison and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-12 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003, casting their fortunes—and their lives—to the wind, the Ellison family embarked on what they thought would be a one-year voyage on their forty-seven-foot sloop, Promise. Five years and more than 25,000 nautical miles later, the family of four returned to the United States and dry land. In this memoir, author Alex Ellison chronicles his family’s adventures on the seas. Culled from a detailed daily journal that Ellison began keeping at the onset of the voyage when he was just eight years old, A Star to Sail Her By reveals his transition from enthusiastic child to capable sailor and reflective young adult. He learned two important lessons as they traveled from port to port: not everything always works the way it should, and change is really the only thing you can count on. “A Top 5 Book Pick” —Yachting Magazine “A Star to Sail Her By is sure to entertain and inspire people who dream of adventure.” —Jennifer Castle, editor, PBSkids “Ellison’s earnest, genuine style is reminiscent of Robin Graham’s in Dove. In crafting a twenty-first century bildungsroman at sea, with a tender family spin, he’ll leave you positively envious.” —Richard King, PhD, professor of literature of the sea, Williams College “A terrific tale of an unbelievable upbringing.” —Clint Grantberry, KLIF, Dallas, TX “In and of itself, this memoir of a 25,000–nautical mile voyage is informative, entertaining, and eye-opening. That a high school student wrote it is astounding.” —Meredith Laitos, editor, SAIL

While in antiquity, fortuna gubernatrix was praised for shielding the seaborne trade, in the Renaissance fortuna symbolized the conquest of chance and danger. Under such auspices, while relying on risk technologies modern seafaring has never lost its adventurous dimension. Understanding their origin remains a challenge for the history of science and the history of literature.

Book The Archaeology of Manila Galleons in the American Continent

Download or read book The Archaeology of Manila Galleons in the American Continent written by Scott S. Williams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book devoted to the topic of Manila galleon shipwrecks in North America; previous research on Manila galleons either has focused on the economics of the Manila galleon trade or has been limited to reports of the galleon wreck sites in the western Pacific salvaged for their cargoes. All three North American shipwrecks are protected under the historic preservation laws of the United States or Mexico, and each shipwreck site has been investigated by professional archaeologists seeking to answer research questions posed in peer-reviewed research designs. The majority of Manila galleon wrecks are found in the western Pacific and were salvaged by treasure hunters rather than recovered by archaeologists. The three North American shipwrecks represent the most protected Manila galleon archaeological sites, so their potential for future archaeological research is higher than for many of the extant shipwrecks of the western Pacific.

With a singleness of purpose as ferocious as any hazard he encountered, Tristan Jones would not give up—even after dodging snipers on the Red Sea, capsizing off the Cape of Good Hope, starving in the Amazon, struggling for 3,000 miles against the mightiest sea current in the world, and hauling his boat over the rugged Andes three miles above sea level to find at last the legendary Island of the Sun. And beyond lay the most awesome challenge of all: the tortuous trek through 6,000 miles of uncharted rivers to find his way back to the ocean.
