Book A Descriptive Account of the Mammals of Borneo Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Descriptive Account of the Mammals of Borneo Classic Reprint written by Charles Hose and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive Account of the Mammals of Borneo The following Descriptive Account of the Mammals of Borneo, has been based mainly on the collections made by myself in the Baram District of Sarawak during the years from 1884 to 1892. The map appended to this Account indicates the localities at which these collections have been made by having their names underlined. In preparing these pages I have to acknowledge the valuable assistance I have received from the following authoritative works on the Mammals occurring in this part of the Malayan region: from Dr. John Anderson's Zoology of Western Yunnan; from Papers by Dr. Jentink in the well known Notes from the Leyden Museum; from Dr. Blanford's Fauna of British India, Dr. T. Horsfield's Researches in Java, and Dr. Dobson's Chiroptera. have also taken full advantage of the various writings of Drs. Muller and Schlegel. But to no one more than to Mr. Oldfield Thomas of the British Museum, am I indebted not only for the aid I have derived from his numerous papers in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society and in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History describing my own and other Bornean collections; but more than I can sufficiently acknowledge, to his personal assistance and advice so generously and heartily afforded at all times. It was on his suggestion indeed that I have been prevailed on to attempt the task of putting together for private circulation in collected from the information on the Mammalia of Borneo scattered through the various publications I have just named, to which I have added such personal observations on their habits as I have had the opportunity of making in the field. My object in undertaking this task - of whose many shortcomings I am very sensible - has been to supply a handy guide to the Mammals of the country in which I have spent so many years, in the hope that it may be of some assistance to those engaged in the study of the fauna of this large and interesting island. I cannot close these remarks without expressing how much I am indebted to my good friend Mr. A. H. Everett, not only for his having induced me to take up the investigation of the fauna of Borneo, but for the invariably kind manner in which he has assisted me throughout my researches. Book Wanderings in the Great Forests of Borneo

Download or read book Wanderings in the Great Forests of Borneo written by Odoardo Beccari and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings in the Great Forests of Borneo: Travels and Researches of a Naturalist in Sarawak To naturalists generally, but especially to botanists, the author of the following pages stands in no need of introduction. His work in Borneo, which he here describes, was but the prelude to many years of travel and exploration which have found expression, in so far as regards their scientific results, in the pages of various Societies' publications, and the shelves and drawers of the great museums of Italy and other countries - a monument alike to the author's botanical and zoological knowledge and his tireless zeal as a collector. But while his name is thus familiar to the student of science, notably to those who have made the fauna and flora of the Eastern Archipelago a special subject of research, it is probably less so to what an old translator once contemptuously described as "the mere English reader," or - as it would nowadays be phrased - the man in the street. To the latter it is only necessary to say that no one is more fully qualified to act as guide to the great island amidst whose primeval forests he wandered for so long. Whether the scientific reader does or does not admit the validity of all Dr. Beccari's theories concerning species-formation, he cannot call in question his abundant experience of the country, or his knowledge of the subjects of which he treats. Dr. Beccari tells us that nearly forty years have passed away since the days of which he writes, and deems an apology necessary for so lengthy a hesitation. Certainly, in these days of "steam and speed," a forty-year-old description of a country might seem to a hasty thinker something more than a little out of date. Were he to reject the volume on these grounds, his conclusion would be an erroneous one, and he would miss not a little. These vast primeval groves, through which the author will guide him so pleasantly, secure from mosquito's bite and equatorial temperatures, are to-day as they have been from almost the beginning of things. The stupendous trees which form them have turned from seedling to mould for aeons not to be numbered. Beneath the shade of their predecessors the common ancestors of Man and Mayas may have wandered; and though change is touching even the unchanging East, and there are such things as volcanoes to be reckoned with, the end of the Bornean forest is not, as yet, within sight. It is with nature rather than man that Dr. Beccari deals, and nature needs something more than a generation to get out of date. Book Two Years in the Jungle

Download or read book Two Years in the Jungle written by William T. Hornaday and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Years in the Jungle: The Experiences of a Hunter and Naturalist in India, Ceylon, the Malay Peninsula and Borneo As a matter of simple justice to myself, I must inform the reader that the journey of which this book is a record was one of action rather than observation, and opportunities for study were few and far between. Owing to the circumstances under which the trip was carried out, all my waking hours were occupied in a ceaseless warfare for specimens, and my only regret comes when I think what "it might have been," for me at least, had I not been obliged to shoot, preserve, care for and pack up nearly every specimen with my own hands. From first to last I had no other assistance than such as could be rendered by ignorant and maladroit native servants. Even in the preparation of these pages the demon of Work has still pursued me, and the task has been accomplished only by the aid of "midnight oil," when wearied by the labors of the day. What follows is offered merely as a faithful pen-picture of what may be seen and done by almost any healthy young man in two year 9 of ups and downs in the East Indies. He, at least, who loves the green woods and rippling waters, and has felt the mystic spell of life in "a vast wilderness," will appreciate the record of my experiences. I love nature and all her works, but one day in an East Indian jungle, among strange men and beasts, is worth more to me than a year among dry and musty "study specimens." The green forest, the any mountain, the plain, the river, and the sea-shore are to me a perpetual delight, and the pursuit, for a good purpose, of the living creatures that inhabit them adds an element of buoyant excitement to the enjoyment of natural scenery, which at best can be but feebly portrayed in words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures in Borneo: A Tale of Shipwreck The first thing I can recall to my recollection is a mean house in a dreary street towards Gray's Inn Lane, where I lived with my father and mother. They, however, were neither mean nor dreary. Throughout the years that have since elapsed, I have rarely seen a nobler-looking man than my father, and never, decidedly never, a more beautiful woman than his wife. He was grave, indeed, - much graver than my mother; and I attributed the different impression they made upon me to the black colour of his dress, while she was constantly attired in white, or some light quaker-colour, pleasant to look on. I did not then know that the black coat I thought so mournful, was simply the livery of a grave profession. - My father was in orders.
