Book Sinophone Malaysian Literature

Download or read book Sinophone Malaysian Literature written by Alison M. Groppe and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's recent economic growth has fed a rapid increase in the study of modern Chinese language and literature globally. In this shifting global context, authors who work on the edges of the literary empire raise important questions about the homogeneity of language, identity and culture that is produced by the modern Chinese literary canon. This book examines a key segment of this literature and asks, "What does it mean to be of Chinese descent and Chinese-speaking outside of China?" While there have been several excellent works that deal with individual Chinese authors from Malaysia, there is to date no broadly framed and comprehensive study of the body of Chinese diasporic literature emerging from this multiethnic, polylinguistic country. This neglect is surprising given the vibrant development of Chinese Malaysian literature. This book fills the gap by looking specifically at how diasporic Chinese subjects make sense of their Chinese and Malaysian identities in postcolonial Malaysia. This book will be of value to scholars and students of Chinese-language literature and culture. It will also appeal to scholars and students in the fields of Chinese and Southeast Asia studies as well as those interested in postcolonial, diaspora, migration, Asian American studies, and world literature.

Download or read book Framing Corruption in Malaysian Mainstream and Alternative Media written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject South Asian Studies, South-Eastern Asian Studies, grade: 1,3, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institut für Ostasiatische Philologien), language: English, abstract: This paper will carefully examine the different frames to the presentation of corruption in four Malaysian online newspapers, within which selection are included examples of both mainstream and alternative media. These frames determine the coverage of a specific event or topic, which means that they define the information that is selected and that which is left out when reporting on a certain issue. As different frames can lead to very different and perhaps even opposing point of views, they strongly influence and guide people's thinking process. The first section is subdivided into three parts. As a first step, I will consider the origins of the close alliance between mainstream newspapers and the government. On the basis of articles from The Star Online and The Sun Daily, which are online examples of daily mainstream newspapers, the next two parts analyze how corruption is reported. In the following chapter I will start by giving an overview of alternative media in the Internet. This will precede a re-examination of articles from the alternative online newspapers Malaysia Today and Free Malaysia Today, with regard to the presentation of corruption. The principal conclusions of this study will be summarized in the end.

This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2014 in the subject History - Asia, National University of Malaysia, course: History, language: English, abstract: This study will analyze the historical development of Malay nationalism against Western powers, particularly the British in Malaya before independence in 1957. The method used in this study is based on the method of observation of the resources available at the library and the National Archives of Malaysia. This study will begin with the dismantling of the prior history of Malaya’s early economic development. The arrival of the Western powers, namely the Portuguese, Dutch and British to Malaya was due to the economic importance of Malaya, which is also known as the Land of Gold and Gold Peninsular by foreign races. Malaya was colonized for more than 400 years since the Portuguese colonization in 1511. When the British controlled Malaya, the inclusion of their pro-Western idea has created conflict with the Malay community. This study will focus on the historiography of the Malay community to look at the historical development of Malay nationalism and the parties involved in the resistance against the British. After the country gained independence, the implementation of the Look East Policy by Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in 1982 is seen to end the continuous conflict between pro-Western idea that been brought by the colonists and the Malay nationalism spirit, with the Japanese model representing the East model has replaced the long-standing Western models that dominate the lives of the Malays as far back as the Portuguese domination of Malacca in 1511.
