Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book Unsustainable World

Download or read book Unsustainable World written by Peter N. Nemetz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-27 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a cross-disciplinary, science- and economics-based approach, this book provides a sobering and comprehensive assessment of the multifaceted barriers to achieving sustainability at a global level. Organized into three parts, the book defines sustainability in part I and sets the context of the historical and current difficulties facing the world today. In parts II and III, it outlines the sustainability challenges faced in transportation, manufacturing, and agriculture, and then in turn addresses the solutions, conditional solutions, and nonsolutions to these challenges. These include electric and autonomous automobiles, nuclear power, renewable energy, geoengineering, and carbon capture and storage. The author attempts to differentiate among those proposed solutions and discusses which are most promising and which are infeasible, counterproductive, and potentially a waste of time and money. In each of the book’s chapters, the scientific evidence is presented in detail, in keeping with the advice of the young Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, to let the science speak for itself. The author outlines why sustainability is unlikely to be achieved in several key areas of human endeavor and readers are challenged to weigh the scientific evidence for themselves. Using an economic business-based approach, this book introduces students and general readers to the challenges of sustainability and the environmental difficulties facing humanity today.

Book Climate Change and Renewable Energy

Download or read book Climate Change and Renewable Energy written by Martin J. Bush and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive overview of the global climate change impacts caused by the continued use of fossil fuels, which results in enormous damage to the global environment, biodiversity, and human health. It argues that the key to a transition to a low carbon future is the rapid and large-scale deployment of renewable energy technologies in power generation, transport and industry, coupled with super energy-efficient building design and construction. However, the author also reveals how major oil companies and petrochemical conglomerates have systematically attempted to manufacture doubt and uncertainty about global warming and climate change, continue to block the commercialization of solar energy and wind power, and impede the electrification of the transport sector. Martin Bush’s solution is a theory-of-change approach to substantially reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 2050, which sets out realistic steps that people can take now to help make a difference.

Book Designing Optimizing and Implementing an Arctic Observing Network

Download or read book Designing Optimizing and Implementing an Arctic Observing Network written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Executive Summary: The Arctic has become a focus of scientific research through its role as both an amplifier and driver of global climate change. Policy imperatives involving Arctic climate change range from marine shipping to resource extraction, the vulnerability of civil and private infrastructure, and the preservation of endangered biotic and cultural assets. Just as the environment and decision-making contexts are rapidly changing, so has the scope and nature of observing strategies to monitor and understand Arctic system change. The concept of an integrated Arctic observatory dates to the late 1990s with early planning of the Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH) initiative. The multidisciplinary Arctic Observing Network (AON) has been implemented with guidance from SEARCH workshop reports, the 2006 "Toward an Integrated Arctic Observing Network" report by the National Research Council, and meetings organized through the SEARCH Observing Change Panel. The International Polar Year (IPY) of 2007-2008 provided substantial resources to put in place key pieces of an AON. We are now ready to review options and approaches to guide observing system design and optimizing a sustainable system. This Arctic Observation Network Design and Implementation (ADI) Task Force report provides guidance to the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other agencies interested in the AON. This report focuses on the continued development of the AON, with the following major goals: ? assess the present state and near-term implementation plans of the AON and related efforts, ? synthesize lessons learned from other observing systems, ? identify and assess promising approaches and tools for system design and optimization, ? offer and discuss specific design options and approaches, and ? provide a summary of ADI Task Force findings and recommendations. The ADI Task Force efforts to engage a broad set of contributors included a community survey and two workshops (in 2009 and 2012) to discuss observing systems and approaches. Outcomes of the workshops and community survey are provided in this report; these serve as the foundation for the Task Force recommendations"--Page 1.
