Book excerpt: Benjamin Franklin decries the recent massacre by the self-styled Paxton Boys of peaceful Native Americans belonging to the Conestoga tribe in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and the subsequent murder by mob action against those remaining Indians who had been taken to the county workhouse for protection. By contrast, he recounts examples of the "rite of hospitality" exercised on behalf of their enemies by ancient Greeks in Homer's Ulysses, by Muslim Moors under the Saracens, by native Africans in Guinea, and by Native Americans. Franklin also includes copies of proclamations by Governor John Penn against the outrage. The pamphlet concludes with calls for justice against the perpetrators.

Book Massacre of the Conestogas

Download or read book Massacre of the Conestogas written by Jack Brubaker and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping account of how a vigilante mob of Pennsylvania frontiersmen butchered a Native American tribe—and got away with it. On two chilly December days in 1763, bands of armed men raged through camps of peaceful Conestoga Indians. They killed twenty Susquehannock women, children and men, effectively wiping out the tribe. These murderous rampages by Lancaster County’s Paxton Boys were the tragic culmination of a gruesomely violent conflict between European settlers and native tribes. The Paxton Boys then journeyed to Philadelphia, not to evade the law but to confront it. They openly threatened to commit more of the same violence if their demands were not met. In Massacre at the Conestogas, Lancaster journalist Jack Brubaker gives a blow-by-blow account of the massacres, examines their aftermath, and investigates how the Paxton Boys got away with murder.

Book Native Pragmatism

  • Release : 2002-04-01

Download or read book Native Pragmatism written by Scott L. Pratt and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pragmatism is America's most distinctive philosophy. Generally it has been understood as a development of European thought in response to the "American wilderness." A closer examination, however, reveals that the roots and central commitments of pragmatism are indigenous to North America. Native Pragmatism recovers this history and thus provides the means to re-conceive the scope and potential of American philosophy. Pragmatism has been at best only partially understood by those who focus on its European antecedents. This book casts new light on pragmatism's complex origins and demands a rethinking of African American and feminist thought in the context of the American philosophical tradition. Scott L. Pratt demonstrates that pragmatism and its development involved the work of many thinkers previously overlooked in the history of philosophy.
