Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative of a Visit to the Mauritius and South Africa The visit extended to all the towns within the Colonies visited, and to all the Missionary Stations existing in South Africa, at the period Of the visit. In the progress Of the journey, the writer was induced to attempt making rough sketches Of many of the places visited, by finding a difficulty in describing them satisfactorily in words. This circumstance occasioned the pictorial illustrations in the early part Of the volume, now presented to the notice of the reader, to be much fewer than in the middle and the latter part. The sketches of Cape Town and of the Missionary Station Of Zuurbraak, were furnished by other pencils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wild Honey: Stories of South Africa Vivienne Carlton's hand was against all men as she believed all women's to be against her; but she had learned to conceal the fact well. Not by brandishing her scorn and detestation of it could she hope to get back her own from a world that had treated her badly. Two years of struggling for a living in the ranks of journalism had taught her nothing if it had not taught her this! Ah! What a two years! Instead of enjoying the brilliant peace of the land about her, she was thinking of them now, turning her eyes inward to memories that were poisoning her life. Two years of outward kow-towing to those who had once kow-towed to her, of being cut and ignored by people who when she was heiress to great estates and an ancient name would have petted and fawned upon her, had not the natural haughtiness Of her nature rebuffed them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Southern Africa: In the Years 1803, 1804, 1805 and 1806 The dispositions of the excellent persons in whose service I was engaged forbids me to say all that 'i could gladly say of them. From the mouth of one who owes them so much, the most truly deserved praise, the mere ex pression of the gratitude due to them, might appear too much like flattery; and there is a certain class of readers, who can discover in ever so slight a tribute of applause sufficient ground'for a suspicion of partiality, which would ill become a German writer. True it is, that in these people I love a whole nation, but I should consider it as the most unpardonable weakness were I to degrade my narrative with any thing that might have the remotest appearance of untruth in order to gratify that love and I had rather remain wholly silent than forbear to speak with the frankness and sincerity which foreigners have always found so praise-worthy in the character of my country men.' 'what renders the present work, however, one of the most pleasing undertakings of my life is, thati have never had any temptation, through ia discretion towards my benefactors, to hazard losing the recompense which posterity Will perhaps first bestow upon my undeviating adherence to truth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By extending their voyages to all oceans from the 1760s onward, whaling vessels from North America and Europe spanned a novel net of hunting grounds, maritime routes, supply posts, and transport chains across the globe. For obtaining provisions, cutting firewood, recruiting additional men, and transshipping whale products, these highly mobile hunters regularly frequented coastal places and islands along their routes, which were largely determined by the migratory movements of their prey. American-style pelagic whaling thus constituted a significant, though often overlooked factor in connecting people and places between distant world regions during the long nineteenth century. Focusing on Africa, this book investigates side-effects resulting from stopovers by whalers for littoral societies on the economic, social, political, and cultural level. For this purpose it draws on eight local case studies, four from Africa’s west coast and four from its east coast. In the overall picture, the book shows a broad range of effects and side-effects of different forms and strengths, which it figures as a "grey undercurrent" of global history.

Book excerpt: From the author of Borne and Annihilation comes the paperback reissue of his cult classic Shriek: An Afterword. An epic yet personal look at several decades of life, love, and death in the imaginary city of Ambergris—previously chronicled in Jeff VanderMeer’s acclaimed City of Saints and Madmen—Shriek: An Afterword relates the scandalous, heartbreaking, and horrifying secret history of two squabbling siblings and their confidantes, protectors, and enemies. Narrated with flamboyant intensity and under increasingly urgent conditions by the ex-society figure Janice Shriek, this afterword presents a vivid gallery of characters and events, emphasizing the adventures of Janice’s brother Duncan, a historian obsessed with a doomed love affair and a secret that may kill or transform him; a war between rival publishing houses that will change Ambergris forever; and the gray caps, a marginalized people armed with advanced fungal technologies, who have been waiting underground for their chance to mold the future of the city. After reading this introduction to the Family Shriek—part academic treatise, part tell-all biography—you’ll never look at history in quite the same way.
