Download or read book A Narrative of a Visit to the Mauritius and South Africa Classic Reprint written by James Backhouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 794 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative of a Visit to the Mauritius and South Africa The visit extended to all the towns within the Colonies visited, and to all the Missionary Stations existing in South Africa, at the period Of the visit. In the progress Of the journey, the writer was induced to attempt making rough sketches Of many of the places visited, by finding a difficulty in describing them satisfactorily in words. This circumstance occasioned the pictorial illustrations in the early part of the volume, now presented to the notice of the reader, to be much fewer than in the middle and the latter part. The Sketches Of Cape Town and of the Missionary Station Of Zuurbraak, were furnished by other pencils. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Structure Meaning and Ritual in the Narratives of the Southern San

Download or read book Structure Meaning and Ritual in the Narratives of the Southern San written by Roger Hewitt and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2008-08-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses texts drawn from the Bleek and Lloyd Archive, arguably one of the most important collections for the understanding of South African cultural heritage and in particular the traditions of the /Xam, South Africas first people. Initially appearing in a now rare 1986 edition and here re-issued for the first time, the doctoral thesis on which the book is based became the catalyst for much scholarly research. The book offers an analysis of the entire corpus of /Xam narratives found in the Bleek and Lloyd collection, focusing particularly on the cycle of narratives concerning the trickster /Kaggen (Mantis). These are examined on three levels from the 'deep structures' with resonances in other areas of /Xam culture and supernatural belief, through the recurring patterns of narrative composition apparent across the cycle and finally touching on the observable differences in the performances by the various /Xam collaborators. Hewitt's text remains the only comprehensive and detailed study of /Xam narrative, and it has become itself the object of study by researchers and PhD candidates in South Africa, the United Kingdom, Canada and elsewhere. This new edition at last makes Hewitt's important work more widely available. It will be a welcome addition to the recently burgeoning literature on the place of the /Xam hunter-gatherers in the complex history of South African culture and society.

Book Outlaws Anxiety and Disorder in Southern Africa

Download or read book Outlaws Anxiety and Disorder in Southern Africa written by Rachel King and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how objects, landscapes, and architecture were at the heart of how people imagined outlaws and disorder in colonial southern Africa. Drawing on evidence from several disciplines, it chronicles how cattle raiders were created, pursued, and controlled, and how modern scholarship strives to reconstruct pasts of disruption and deviance. Through a series of vignettes, Rachel King uses excavated material, rock art, archival texts, and object collections to explore different facets of how disorderly figures were shaped through impressions of places and material culture as much as actual transgression. Addressing themes from mobility to wilderness, historiography to violence, resistance to development, King details the world that raiders made over the last two centuries in southern Africa while also critiquing scholars’ tools for describing this world. Offering inter-disciplinary perspectives on the past in Africa’s southernmost mountains, this book grapples with concepts relevant to those interested in rule-breakers and rule-makers, both in Africa and the wider world.
