Such meagre data came in response to repeated appeals that the completion of the task has seemed at times almost hopeless. Undertaken as a labor of love, the work has proved far more exacting than was anticipated and has been full of discouragements which only those engaged in its fulfillment can appreciate. The committee has endeavored to make the book, so far as possible, strictly a regimental history, not a general criticism on the conduct of the war. Irrelevant matter has been largely excluded and references to other regiments and organizations have been usually made only when the situation could not otherwise be clearly set forth.
