Book excerpt: The diseases that fall under the generalized group of demyelinating diseases -Multiple Sclerosis, Leukodystrophyes, Encephalomyelitis-are the focus of worldwide concern. This volume contains papers presented by leading scientists who attended the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held at the Istituto Superiore di SanitA, Rome, March 1-4, 1993. This book is an update of the previous one published in 1987 of the research discussed at a similar meeting held in 1986. It was decided to hold this 2nd meeting since there has been great progress in the advances in understanding the myelinogenesis process in the last five years. The workshop gathered together scientists from many fields such as cellular and molecular biology, immunology, pathology, virology and of course clinical neurology. Stimulating ideas were exchanged in the hope that more knowledge of demyelinating diseases can lead to new theraupetic approaches. Although the workshop was on the whole similar to the previous one, this time there was more emphasis on experimental models and clinical aspects. In the former the use of animal and cellular models as tools for understanding the pathological mechanisms linked to human disease were discussed; in the latter the clinicians described the filtering down of basic research to clinical treatment The publication of this interdisciplinary exchange is to make known the results of the most recent research among the investigators from allover the world involved in these studies.

Book excerpt: The present book is based on the papers presented during an inter disciplinary meeting which was held in Rome October 27-30, 1986, at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita under the sponsorship of NATO, and with a financial contribution of the Cassa di Risparmio di Roma. The meeting was of great interest because, for the first time, a group of highly qualified scientists specializing in different fields were gathered together to discuss the problem of demyelinating diseases. In thi. context molecular biologists, immunologists, virologists, and lipid chemists could discuss with clinicians for four days every aspect of demyelinating diseases. They shared results of the more recent research with the hope that more knowledge of the myelinating process will eventually succeed in finding new treatments for these diseases. The meeting was successful, perhaps in part because discussions during lunches and dinners provided an opportunity for the exchange of new ideas. This was apparent in the discussions held after the presen tation of each paper and was summarized in the very lively round table which was held on the last day. The editor wishes to express his thanks to the scientific committee members: N. Baumann, C. Fieschi, G. Macchi, J.M. Matthieu, K. Suzuki. It was their advice that made the choice of participants and subjects so successful. The organizer also acknowledge the organizing support of NATO in preparing these proceedings. Glial cells (astrocytes, oligodentrocytes, microglial cells) themselves release substantial amounts of cytokines, growth factors and other signaling molecules, which play an important role during injury and regeneration. Another signaling route between neurons and glial cells follows ion channels and neurotransmitter receptors. Institute on "Vascular Endothelium: Physiological Basis of Clinical Problems II," which took place between June 20 and 30, 1992 in Rhodes, Greece. This third in a series of ASIs on vascular endothelium continued on the theme of the first (1988) ASI on "Receptors and Transduction Mechanisms" and particularly expanded that of the 1990 conference on ''Physiological Basis of Clinical Problems. " We continued the successful practice of bringing together clinicians and scientists: this was reflected equally well in the composition of the organizing committee as in the background of the particiJ?ants. Endothelial cell functions and dysfunctions present as many challenges to the mvestigator as they do to the curious clinical practitioner. As these problems are necessarily different, this unique ten-day co-habitation of these individuals continued to offer fresh outlooks to each, stimulated potential collaborative efforts and, most importantly, advanced --ever so slightly--our knowledge of vascular biology. This year's conference was further enriched by the presence of several of our colleagues from Eastern Europe whom we are delighted to welcome as officially sponsored participants to this and future NATO-supported meetings. Clinical interest in the hand and wrist are now at a peak on an international level. Economic implications of disability affecting the hand and wrist are recognized that have international scope crossing oceans, cultures, languages and political philosophies. As with any struggle, a common ground for understanding is essential. NATO conferences such as this symposium on Biomechanics of the Hand and Wrist provides such a basis upon which to build discernment of fundamental postulates. As a start, basic research directed at studies of anatomy, pathology and pathophysiology and mechanical modeling is essential. To take these important steps further forward, funding from government and industry are needed to consider fundamental principles within the material sciences, biomechanical disciplines, applied anatomy and physiology and concepts of engineering modeling that have been applied to other areas of the musculoskeletal system.

Book excerpt: Lyme Borreliosis is a worldwide infectious disease causing a multisystem illness with considerable morbidity, particularly in North America and Europe. The causative agent is the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi, which is usually transmitted by the ixodid tick from animal reservoirs. This book is formed by contributions from the Second European Symposium on Lyme Borreliosis, held at St George's Hospital Medical School, London in 1993, which reviewed the current state of knowledge of the condition with regard to clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, ecology, epidemiology, biology and immunopathogenesis. In this book, important data is reviewed concerning the clinical manifestations of Lyme Borreliosis. It seems that strain variation of the spirochaete is the main cause of regional differences seen in the clinical presentation of patients. One striking example of this, is the relatively high incidence of Lyme arthritis in the USA and apparent rarity of this manifestion in some areas of Europe. These important studies open the way for exciting new research that focuses on the immunological and molecular mechanisms that result in disease. A full insight into the ecology of Borrelia burgdorferi is essential to a balanced understanding of the disease and a number of excellent reviews on this subject are included. Significant advances with regard to the biology of Borrelia burgdorjeri and the immunopathogenic mechanisms that result in disease have been made, enabling the role of the Band T lymphocytes in disease to be established and the development of sophisticated phenotyping methods, improved diagnostic tests and effective vaccines.

In a number of disease states, however, there is a derangement of angiogenesis, which can contribute to the pathology of these conditions. Hence, understanding the molecular biology of endothelial cell activation and differentiation and the mechanisms involved in the regulation of angiogenesis, could explain the derangement in disease states and also provide the basis for developing promoters or suppressors of angiogenesis for clinical applications. This book contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Angiogenesis: Molecular Biology, Oinical Aspects" held in Rhodes, Greece, from June 16-27, 1993. This meeting was a comprehensive review of the various aspects of angiogenesis such as embryonic development, endothelial cell heterogeneity and tissue specificity, molecular biology of endothelial cell, mechanisms for the regulation of angiogenesis, disease states in which angiogenesis is involved and potential application of promoters or suppressors of angiogenesis. The presentations and discussions of the meeting provided an opportunity for investigators from many different areas of basic science and medicine to exchange information, evaluate the present status and provide future research directions in the field of angiogenesis.
