Book excerpt: I present the results of a multi-wavelength study of global, radial and local star formation histories (SFHs) in a statistical sample of 34 nearby galaxies. The SFHs are estimated using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, and are presented alongside classic indicators of changes in stellar population ages (optical colors, specific star formation rates, and H-alpha equivalent widths). I interpret the results of this methodology in the context of the literature for each galaxy. In addition to the global and radial measurements, ultraviolet-selected sources in each galaxy are detected and cataloged. I use two different methods (k-means clustering and two-point angular correlation functions) to describe the spatial distributions of these UV sources. I find that there is a connection between the clustering of UV sources in M63 and the presence of spiral arms. The less-clustered distributions of UV sources seen in galaxies without spiral arms suggests that the spiral arms help to cluster star formation in the stellar disk. Finally, I find that there is a detectable radial gradient in the age of the younger stellar population when looking at the full catalog of all UV sources. This result agrees with the leading theory for structure formation in the universe, the Lambda-CDM model, which theorizes that galaxies form and evolve "inside-out".

Book excerpt: Studying galaxy structures using different wavebands enables us to observe a varietyof intrinsic galactic features and to test the validity of underlying theories in detail. Density wave theory, originally proposed by C.C. Lin and F. Shu (Lin & Shu 1964), explains the nature of the spiral arm patterns in disk galaxies as density waves that propagate through the galactic disk. From spiral galaxies to the rings of Saturn, density wave theory has had success in providing qualitative explanations of disk dynamics. However, it is now widely believed that galactic disks are dissipative systems which raises the question of whether they are really semi-permanent features as suggested by Lin and Shu. The question is when density waves do arise, how long are they sustained in this dissipative medium. Are they transient or relatively long-standing?. In this study I try to test the validity of density wave theory using multi-wavelength image data, star formation history maps and the spatially resolved stellar clusters. I also try to answer the question, whether transient or relatively long lasting spiral patterns better fit the patterns that we see in disk galaxies. The study primarily focuses on two implications of the theory, the co-rotation radius and the existence of an age-gradient. The work elaborates the use of multiple techniques in identifying the corotation radius and provides strong evidence in favor of density wave theory. Age gradients are observed using star formation history maps and specially resolved stellar cluster maps. The study investigates and presents evidence in favor of density wave theory framework and also provides a lower age limit for the spiral structure formation.

Book excerpt: The PPAK Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) Nearby Galaxies Survey: PINGS, a 2-dimensional spectroscopic mosaicking of 17 nearby disk galaxies in the optical wavelength range. This project represents the first attempt to obtain continuous coverage spectra of the whole surface of a galaxy in the nearby universe. The final data set comprises more than 50000 individual spectra, covering in total an observed area of nearly 80 arcmin square. The powerful capabilities of wide-field 2D spectroscopic studies areproven. The chemical composition of the whole surface of a spiral galaxy ischaracterised for the first time as a function not only of radius, but of theintrinsic morphology of the galaxy, allowing a more realistic determination oftheir physical properties. The methodology, analysis and results of thisdissertation will hopefully contribute in a significant way to understand thenature of the physical and chemical properties of the gas phase in spiralgalaxies.

More than 180 Cosmologists from all over the world gathered for a four-day intense meeting in which recent results from large ground based surveys (AAT/2-df, SLOAN) and space missions (WMAP, Chandra, XMM, ISO, HST) were presented and debated, providing a huge impetus to our knowledge of the Cosmos. The future of the subject (experiments, and directions of research) was also discussed. The conference was devoted mostly on the constraints on Cosmological models and galaxy formation theories that arise from the study of the high redshift Universe, from clusters of galaxies, and their evolution, from the cosmic microwave background, the large-scale structure and star-formation history.

Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, the sample of galaxies in the early universe has been growing thanks to the increasing sensitivities in the Optical/NIR telescopes. However, their dust properties are poorly known due to the lack of deep far-infrared or sub-mm observations. This thesis explores the multi-wavelength properties of a population of galaxies observed ~2Gyr after the Big Bang. Our sample includes 22000 galaxies, and it has been selected by the classical U-dropout or Lyman Break technique. We use a statistical technique, called stacking analysis, that combines the signal from a large number of sources to lower the detection limits on the current long wavelengths observations. It allows us to obtain data over the full FUV-to-FIR spectral domain, and study the star formation and dust attenuation of these galaxies.

Book excerpt: How does it happen that billions of stars can cooperate to produce the beautiful spirals that characterize so many galaxies, including ours? This book presents a theory of spiral structure that has been developed over the past three decades under the continuous stimulus of new observational studies. The theory unfolds in a way that can be grasped by any reader with an undergraduate science background who is interested in astronomy, as well as by graduate students and scientists actively involved in astronomy or related subjects who want to see the "backbone" and the physical content of the theory. The foundations of this theoretical framework were laid in the early 1960s, following the pioneering work of B. Lindblad. C. C. Lin had already contributed significantly to the field of fluid mechanics when he turned his attention to spiral structures, and he has focused on the problem ever since. Giuseppe Bertin joined this research effort when he first visited at MIT in 1975, bringing to the project knowledge from his work on elliptical galaxies and plasma astrophysics. Together, Bertin and Lin have contributed to the exciting developments on spiral structure of the last few decades, working closely with many observers and other theorists. In this book they describe the density-wave theory with the goal of making the key concepts and astrophysical implications explicit and accessible. The essence of the solution Bertin and Lin present is that the spirals are wave rather than material phenomena and generally trace intrinsic characteristics of the individual galaxies. The book is in three parts--Physical Concepts, Observational Studies, and Dynamical Mechanisms--with most of the technical details confined to the last part.
