Book A Multi method Etiological Assessment of Alcohol related Sexual Victimization and Consequences in First year College Women

Download or read book A Multi method Etiological Assessment of Alcohol related Sexual Victimization and Consequences in First year College Women written by Nichole Scaglione and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Alcohol-related sexual victimization and consequences (AViC) disproportionately affect first-year college women in the U.S. Heavy drinking and social factors typical of the college context have been linked to increased AViC risk, while the use of drinking-related and social protective behaviors have been shown to decrease risk. However, there is limited work simultaneously examining these behaviors, specifically at the event-level. Objective: The current study examined the effects of alcohol use, drinking protective behaviors, social protective behaviors, and contextual risk factors on AViC at the global level, using a prospective longitudinal design (Aim 1) and at the event-level using daily diary data (Aim 2). Aim 3 utilized ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine the processes (via intentions and willingness) that influence decisions to drink, use protective behaviors, or engage in contextual risk on a given day. Methods: A random sample of 235 first-year female drinkers completed web-based assessments at the beginning (baseline) and end (3-month follow-up) of their first semester of college (Aim 1). Two-thirds of participants were randomized to an EMA protocol, which included 3-5 short cell phone-based surveys each day for 14 days (Aims 2 & 3). Hypotheses were tested using path analysis (Aims 1 and 2) and hierarchical linear modeling (Aim 3). Results: At the global level, typical weekend drinking was positively associated with alcohol-related victimization, but not consequences. This association weakened as individuals used more protective behaviors and more frequently drank in certain contexts (e.g., at parties; with friends). At the event-level, both estimated blood alcohol concentration (eBAC) and variability in eBAC (averaged across individual drinking occasions) were associated with increased AViC. Drinking protective behavior use moderated these effects; however, social protective behavior use did not. Contextual factors also moderated the associations between event-level eBAC and AViC, such that for individuals who frequently engaged in sexual behavior during/after drinking, as their drinking and variability in drinking increased, so did their risk for AViC. Aim 3 analyses revealed individuals achieved higher eBACs, used more protective behaviors and engaged in greater contextual risk when they had greater intentions and were more willing to do so (across drinking occasions). The effects of willingness and intentions on drinking, protective behavior use, and contextual risk exposure varied within and across days. For example, women engaged in a wider variety of drinking contexts on days when their context intentions were higher than their own mean, and women used more social protective behaviors on days when their willingness to do so increased throughout the day. Implications: The current study is among the first to simultaneously examine drinking, protective behavior use, and context as predictors of AViC at multiple levels (e.g., global vs. daily). Findings suggest harm-reduction alcohol interventions remain a useful tool in reducing AViC, but that their efficacy might be enhanced by also accounting for daily variability in drinking and by promoting the use of both drinking and social protective behaviors. Momentary examination of decision-making processes revealed that intentions and willingness might influence behavior at different levels, challenging behavioral theories that assume global associations.

Book Examination of a Sex related Distress Self medication Drinking Model Following Sexual Victimization

Download or read book Examination of a Sex related Distress Self medication Drinking Model Following Sexual Victimization written by Elizabeth R. Bird and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women ages 18-24 are at the highest risk for sexual victimization (SV), with more than 20% of women affected during college. The self-medication model of alcohol use, whereby drinking is negatively reinforced through the reduction of distress, is widely supported as a method by which women with a SV history cope. Women with a history of SV, compared to without, engage more frequently in pre-sex drinking0́3drinking before or during sexual activity, and report more problems related to sexuality. Sexual health variables such as sex-related distress (i.e., distress related to sexual behavior or sexuality) and sex-related drinking motives (i.e., drinking to cope with sex-related distress) might mediate the relationships between SV and pre-sex drinking and between SV and negative sexual consequences, representing unique pathways. This dissertation examines the sex-related self-medication model in first and second year college women using two methodologies among one umbrella sample. The first (N = 379) uses an online, longitudinal survey (baseline, six weeks, and twelve weeks) and path analysis. Adult sexual assault (ASA) severity was indirectly associated with drinking to cope with sex-related distress through sex-related distress. In the same model, ASA severity was also indirectly associated with general drinking to cope through general distress. Thus, the sex-related self-medication model may function independently of the general self-medication model. In the second study, participants (n = 300) reported on their most recent pre-sex drinking experience within the past six weeks or otherwise, sexual experience. Results suggested that ASA severity and trait sex-related distress are likely risk factors for engaging in sex-related distress self-medication at the event-specific level. Among those who engaged in pre-sex drinking, event-specific sex-related distress was indirectly associated with negative sexual consequences through sex-related drinking to cope. Event-specific sex-related distress was not associated with number of pre-sex drinks or level of subjective intoxication during sexual activity. Findings highlight the importance of negative sexual consequences as an outcome associated with the sex-related drinking to cope motive as opposed to drinking behavior per se. Investigation of the self-medication model as applied to managing sex-related distress may inform prevention and intervention work targeting adaptive coping and decision-making following ASA.

Book Alcohol and Sexual Violence

Download or read book Alcohol and Sexual Violence written by David DiLillo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-25 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a chronology of the 68th Nebraska Symposium on Motivation, which is focused on contemporary research knowledge about sexual violence and alcohol use. This book is more specific to dating and intimate partner sexual violence in young adult populations. The target audience is researchers, prevention agencies and policymakers within academia and military settings. Alcohol use has long been recognized as a major contributor to sexual assault, with an estimated 50% of sexual assaults in the U.S. involving drinking by the victim, perpetrator, or both. Beyond the usual harmful effects, alcohol-involved assaults are associated with unique sequelae for female victims, including increased self-blame, stigma, and greater alcohol use to cope. Moreover, heavier drinking on the part of the perpetrator is associated with more serious incidents of assault (e.g., involving physical force) that result in more severe outcomes for victims. The purpose of this Symposium on Motivation is to bring together a group of experts in the areas of alcohol and sexual aggression to articulate the causes, consequences, and mechanisms of alcohol-involved sexual assault. Speakers will talk about classic and contemporary research and theories on these issues using cutting-edge approaches (e.g., virtual reality, neuroscience, laboratory-based alcohol administration) from a variety of perspectives (perpetrators, victims, bystanders).

Book A Multi Method Approach to Risk Assessment Among Women with Sexual Abuse Histories

Download or read book A Multi Method Approach to Risk Assessment Among Women with Sexual Abuse Histories written by Susan Elizabeth Drevo and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many empirical works detail the experience of and effects from sexual victimization, the underlying mechanisms that promote a cycle of recurrent victimization are not well understood. The current study replicated a previous study examining the perceptions of the benefits, risks, and personal expected involvement regarding a variety of risk taking behaviors in a sample of 151 college women with and without histories of sexual abuse. The current study further introduced a behavioral task in effort to test the utility of a multi-method approach to risk assessment. T-test analyses revealed that individuals with a history of sexual abuse perceived lesser risk related to illicit drug use, and reported a greater intent to perform behaviors related to illicit drug use and risky sexual behaviors compared to those without a history of sexual abuse. Although there were not significant outcomes differentiating study conditions regarding the behavioral task, modifications to this task are discussed and continued consideration of a multi-method approach is encouraged. Additional implications for future research efforts are discussed.

Book Preventing Sexual Victimization on College Campuses

Download or read book Preventing Sexual Victimization on College Campuses written by Emily Waterman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual violence is a major problem on college campuses, with negative effects on victims health and educational achievement. In general, sexual violence includes attempted or completed nonconsensual touching or penetration (oral, vaginal, or anal) that occurs through verbal coercion, incapacitation, or physical force. Addressing sexual violence requires a focus on the entire translational spectrum from discovery science on the development of risk and protective factors to large scale dissemination of effective preventative interventions and policy changes. In the current dissertation, I present research from two different stages of the translational spectrum to inform sexual violence prevention. In the first paper, I focus on the Type 0 stage of translational research, that is, discovery science about the etiology of sexual violence. I use structural equation modeling to explore longitudinal associations between beliefs about alcohols role in sexual experiences, drinking in large group contexts such as bars and parties, and sexual violence during college among female college students. Findings indicated that women who had been the victims of sexual violence before college were more likely to be victims of sexual violence during college. Women with more positive sex-related alcohol expectancies tended to drink alcohol in large group contexts more frequently than women with less positive expectancies. However, contrary to previous cross-sectional research, women with more positive sex-related alcohol expectancies at the beginning of college were no more likely to be victims of sexual violence during college than women with less positive sex-related alcohol expectancies. In the second paper, I focus on Type 1 translation, or intervention development. A current challenge facing the field of prevention science is scaling up, or disseminating preventative interventions on a large scale. In this paper, I discuss the application of the desirability, feasibility, viability framework to the development of preventative interventions with the potential for large scale impact. Then, in a case study, I present a method for evaluating the desirability, feasibly, and viability of preventative interventions. Implications from the current dissertation indicate a need for longitudinal research on sexual victimization risk factors, because risk factors that precede the social problem may be targeted with preventative interventions. I propose that preventionists may use the desirability, feasibility, viability framework to increase the potential of their interventions for large scale impact. In addition, I suggest that future sexual violence prevention efforts should focus on preventing revictimization, vary intervention settings, and disseminate effective preventative interventions prior to the college transition. Preventionists should consider the multiple stages of translational research in their work to rapidly turn scientific findings into public health impact.

Book Do Drinking Consequences Predict Sexual Revictimization in a College Sample of Binge drinking Women

Download or read book Do Drinking Consequences Predict Sexual Revictimization in a College Sample of Binge drinking Women written by Helen R. Valenstein-Mah and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual victimization is prevalent on college campuses in the US. A proportion of women experience multiple sexual assaults, and sexual assault risk in college is heightened among those with prior victimization histories. One risk factor for sexual revictimization is victims' alcohol use. Most research has focused on associations between alcohol consumption per se and revictimization. The current study's objective was to understand some potential mechanisms by which drinking confers risk for revictimization. We hypothesized specific drinking consequences would predict risk for revictimization above and beyond the quantity of alcohol consumed. A randomly selected sample of binge drinking female college students was assessed for baseline victimization (categorized as childhood versus adolescent victimization), quantity of alcohol consumed, and drinking consequences experienced. A subset of 162 women was assessed 30 days later for revictimization. Of the subset, 40 (24.6%) women were revictimized in the following 30 days. Blackout drinking at baseline predicted incapacitated sexual revictimization among women previously victimized as adolescents, after accounting for quantity of alcohol consumed. Other drinking consequences examined were not predictive of revictimization. Results support previous findings that adolescent sexual assault is an important predictor of sexual revictimization in college and blackout drinking may confer unique risk for revictimization.

Book Alcohol and Sexual Assault

Download or read book Alcohol and Sexual Assault written by Ashlyn Shay Gollehon and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study used both cross-sectional and longitudinal methods to examine the role of situational drinking in the relationship between a woman's general drinking behaviors and her sexual experiences. Women's drinking behaviors and sexual experiences were assessed following both the first and second years of college (N = 1184). Mediational analyses indicated that cross-sectionally, situational drinking played a role in the relationship between general drinking behaviors and sexual victimization experiences. Longitudinally, however, regression analyses revealed that there was not a reciprocal relationship between drinking behaviors and victimization experiences. Instead, earlier drinking behaviors were most predictive of later drinking behaviors and earlier victimization experiences were most predictive of later victimization experiences; situational drinking emerged as the only other significant predictor within these relationships. These findings suggest that situational drinking needs to be more closely examined as an important factor within the relationship between alcohol and sexual victimization."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book A Review of the Literature on Sexual Assault Perpetrator Characteristics and Behaviors

Download or read book A Review of the Literature on Sexual Assault Perpetrator Characteristics and Behaviors written by Sarah Michal Greathouse and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sexual assault continues to be a pervasive problem, both for society in general and within the military community. To assist the Air Force in its continued efforts to combat sexual assault within its ranks, we reviewed the existing empirical literature on the characteristics and behaviors of adult perpetrators who commit sexual assault against other adults. Our search was not limited to studies of military populations. While a vast majority of the existing literature has focused on sole male perpetrators who assault female victims, we identified some research on other types of perpetrators, including female sexual assault perpetrators, men who perpetrate assault against other men, and perpetrators who participate in group sexual assault. This body of research indicates that adult perpetrators are diverse in terms of their demographics, background characteristics, and motivations. Moreover, research indicates that sexual assault perpetration is likely influenced by a combination of factors, including an individual's developmental and family history; his or her personality, including attitudes/cognitions; and environmental factors, including peer attitudes and alcohol consumption. The complexity of factors that influence sexual assault perpetration and the multiple pathways that lead to an attack make it difficult to predict whether an individual is prone to commit sexual assault. While predicting sexual assault perpetration is problematic, we identified a number of factors related to perpetration that may be relevant for intervention efforts and offer recommendations for the Air Force"--Publisher's web site.
