Download or read book Student generated Digital Media in Science Education written by Garry Hoban and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This timely and innovative book encourages us to ‘flip the classroom’ and empower our students to become content creators. Through creating digital media, they will not only improve their communication skills, but also gain a deeper understanding of core scientific concepts. This book will inspire science academics and science teacher educators to design learning experiences that allow students to take control of their own learning, to generate media that will stimulate them to engage with, learn about, and become effective communicators of science." Professors Susan Jones and Brian F. Yates, Australian Learning and Teaching Council Discipline Scholars for Science "Represents a giant leap forward in our understanding of how digital media can enrich not only the learning of science but also the professional learning of science teachers." Professor Tom Russell, Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada "This excellent edited collection brings together authors at the forefront of promoting media creation in science by children and young people. New media of all kinds are the most culturally significant forms in the lives of learners and the work in this book shows how they can move between home and school and provide new contexts for learning as well as an understanding of key concepts." Dr John Potter, London Knowledge Lab, Dept. of Culture, Communication and Media, University College London, UK Student-generated Digital Media in Science Education supports secondary school teachers, lecturers in universities and teacher educators in improving engagement and understanding in science by helping students unleash their enthusiasm for creating media within the science classroom. Written by pioneers who have been developing their ideas in students’ media making over the last 10 years, it provides a theoretical background, case studies, and a wide range of assignments and assessment tasks designed to address the vital issue of disengagement amongst science learners. It showcases opportunities for learners to use the tools that they already own to design, make and explain science content with five digital media forms that build upon each other— podcasts, digital stories, slowmation, video and blended media. Each chapter provides advice for implementation and evidence of engagement as learners use digital tools to learn science content, develop communication skills, and create science explanations. A student team’s music video animation of the Krebs cycle, a podcast on chemical reactions presented as commentary on a boxing match, a wiki page on an entry in the periodic table of elements, and an animation on vitamin D deficiency among hijab-wearing Muslim women are just some of the imaginative assignments demonstrated. Student-generated Digital Media in Science Education illuminates innovative ways to engage science learners with science content using contemporary digital technologies. It is a must-read text for all educators keen to effectively convey the excitement and wonder of science in the 21st century.

Download or read book Meniere s Disease 1999 Update written by Olivier Sterkers and published by Kugler Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fourth International Symposium on Menière’s Disease was held in Paris in April 1999, in the Montparnasse area close to Prosper Menière’s tomb. This meeting followed the three earlier symposia on Menière’s disease, which have been organized every six years since 1981 in Düsseldorf, Boston and, most recently, in Rome. 1999 saw the bicentenary of Menière’s birth, and to commemorate this, François Legent organized a historical symposium on the different aspects of Prosper Menière’s life. Together with Michel Portmann, the two honorary presidents, Robert Kimura and Jean-Marc Sterkers, gave excellent lectures on the two main topics of Menière’s disease: on experimental endolymphatic hydrops, and the role of both vestibular neurectomy and sac surgery. Numerous papers were presented on research and clinical experiences, and were particularly devoted to the better understanding of both the development of experimental endolymphatic hydrops and the evolution of Menière’s disease. Attention was also drawn to the local treatment of Menière’s disease by the application of drugs to the round window, and furthermore, the indications for and results of surgery for incapacitating vertigo were well defined. Finally, we are pleased to say that this was a very successful meeting and we would like to express our thanks to all the companies, and in particular Solvay Pharmaceuticals, that supported this event. We are certain that the first international symposium of the new millennium on Menière’s disease, which is to be organized by David Lim in the USA, will be even more successful and fruitful than this one. The organizing committee

Download or read book Environmental Health Literacy written by Symma Finn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-12 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores various and distinct aspects of environmental health literacy (EHL) from the perspective of investigators working in this emerging field and their community partners in research. Chapters aim to distinguish EHL from health literacy and environmental health education in order to classify it as a unique field with its own purposes and outcomes. Contributions in this book represent the key aspects of communication, dissemination and implementation, and social scientific research related to environmental health sciences and the range of expertise and interest in EHL. Readers will learn about the conceptual framework and underlying philosophical tenets of EHL, and its relation to health literacy and communications research. Special attention is given to topics like dissemination and implementation of culturally relevant environmental risk messaging, and promotion of EHL through visual technologies. Authoritative entries by experts also focus on important approaches to advancing EHL through community-engaged research and by engaging teachers and students at an early age through developing innovative STEM curriculum. The significance of theater is highlighted by describing the use of an interactive theater experience as an approach that enables community residents to express themselves in non-verbal ways.

Book excerpt: Diabetes Digital Health, Telehealth, and Artificial Intelligence explains how to develop and use the emerging technologies of digital health, telehealth, and artificial intelligence to address this important public health problem to deliver new hardware, software, and processes. The book explores trends in developing and deploying the three most important emerging technologies for diabetes: digital health, telehealth, and artificial intelligence. This book is essential to clinicians, scientists, engineers, industry professionals, regulators, and investors, offering the tools that will be used to create the next generation products to support a precision medicine approach to manage diabetes. According to the CDC, in the US there are 37 million people with diabetes and 96 million people with prediabetes. Diabetes triples the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and is the leading cause of blindness, end stage renal failure, and amputations. The management of diabetes is becoming increasingly dominated by digital health tools consisting of wearable sensors, mobile applications providing decision support software, and wireless communication tools. Digital health provides new data streams that can be combined to create unique approaches for diabetes based on a precision medicine paradigm. - Includes Artificial intelligence (AI) data for the prediction, diagnosis, treatment, and prognostication for diabetes as a model disease - Describes the most important issues of our time that comprise the most important technologies currently being applied to diabetes - Presented in a consistent easy to help those new to the field understand and compare/contrast various elements of digital health, telehealth, and artificial intelligence for diabetes
