Book A Stranger in the House of God

Download or read book A Stranger in the House of God written by John Koessler and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Book It s Hard to Have a Mouse Free House

Download or read book It s Hard to Have a Mouse Free House written by Mary Ellen Stewart and published by Christian Small Pub Assoc. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Christians, we sometimes feel overwhelmed and discouraged about the various problems in our lives. Instead of trusting God the way we should, we often wind up berating ourselves and despairing over our failures. The Old Testament tells us about the rights we have inherited as children and heirs to His kingdom. However, we are living in a world where Satan’s goal is to keep us from realizing our full potential and what is rightfully ours. In 1983, at a women's fellowship meeting, I presented the message the Holy Spirit had given me regarding the ten areas of discipline: worldliness, words, thoughts, pride, fear, unforgiveness, finances, health, prayer, and perseverance. Shortly after teaching that lesson, the Holy Spirit led me into a three-year study of the disciplines to facilitate my own spiritual growth. He showed me that: • worldliness, negative words, and negative thoughts are things that come against us; • pride, fear, and unforgiveness are negative emotions that come against us. When Satan keeps us in a negative mode, he can affect our finances, health, and prayer life. The good news is that God has given us a tool to help us overcome physical and spiritual battles: perseverance. Several years later when I was feeling overwhelmed and discouraged about various problems in my own life, I heard a message from the Lord: "It’s hard to have a mouse-free house. But with God all things are possible." He was reminding me of how a little mouse had sneaked in and violated my house for three weeks when I was away on a trip. As I meditated on the "mouse-free house" concept, I remembered the lessons the Holy Spirit had taught me regarding the ten areas of discipline. God was showing me that Satan violates our spiritual houses the way a mouse violates our physical houses. It was then I realized the Lord was compelling me to put His ten disciplines into a book for instruction and meditation. The ten disciplines are divided into four sections. They show us how to fight Satan’s barrage of tricks and traps that his forces use against us. They will help us develop and maintain a spiritual "mouse-free" house. PART 1: Negative Things That Come Against Us • The negative things that come against us are worldliness, words, and thoughts. Worldliness is anything that keeps us from fellowshipping with God. The section on worldliness defines the covenants that God made to help mankind fight spiritual and physical battles. God never breaks a covenant and His Word does not return void. However, through worldliness, negative words, and negative thoughts we get into unbelief and lose God’s blessings. PART 2: Negative Emotions That Come Against Us • All negative emotions stem from pride, fear, and unforgiveness. Pride originates from Satan, and it wears many faces. It stimulates selfish ambitions and leads to moral decay. It causes us to glorify ourselves instead of God. Fear violates our faith. Satan uses all aspects of fear to keep us doubting our ability to succeed in what we are attempting. Forgiveness is contingent upon an act of the will. Do we choose to forgive and forget? Or do we choose to let an offense stay alive in our spirit, wrestle with it from time to time, and allow old wounds to keep festering? PART 3: Battlefields of Life • The daily battles of life affect our finances, health and prayer. God’s Word teaches us how to have our finances blessed instead of cursed. He listed the blessings we would receive if we obeyed His commandments, and the financial curses that would follow if His commandments were not obeyed. Good health can be maintained by adhering to God’s wisdom and discipline. The body is a homestead given to us by God. The length of our life and our happiness on earth will be determined by the wisdom we use in the upkeep of our temporary home. Prayer is an open line to God’s throne. It helps us deal with the stresses of life. We use it to praise Him, seek His counsel, and enjoy a personal relationship with Him. PART 4: Perseverance: God’s Tool for Overcoming • Perseverance is the key to living in God’s disciplines. It is a steady heartbeat of faith. Not the kind of faith that is tossed about like the waves of the sea. All of God’s disciplines require that we polish up the tool of perseverance. This tool is necessary whether we are attempting a small feat or a large one. "He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" (Micah 6:8). As we continue to practice these ten disciplines, we will develop the ability to walk in love. This will enable us to receive the happiness, health, and prosperity that God has wanted for us from the beginning of creation.

Download or read book I Roomed with the Gods written by Keith Mallory and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Keith Mallory and I started writing this book during the end of my sophomore year in 1963 as a nerdy introverted virgin pledge living in a fraternity house on a major college campus. I didn’t really fit in with the typical “cool” fraternity brothers. But luckily I had two people (my GODs), one another pledge and one a fraternity brother, who were totally different from me, and showed me the way to survive in that fraternity. We shared a room in the ZAP house and because of them I survived and thrived in what could have been hell. The eight handwritten chapters that I wrote in 1963 were lost in the junk that I carried with me after that sophomore year. When I accidentally found those scribbled pages in 2019, during the COVID world, I decided that I needed to complete the fictional story of that stressfully wonderful experience in that fraternity with my two GODs. So as an almost octogenarian, I completed seven more chapters of this book that fictionally described my fraternity life (dating, partying, dancing, drinking, some intense “making out” BUT mostly because of my “ADD”, studying and hiding in the library) as that nerdy pledge in those simpler times. Anyone who’s ever lived in a fraternity house (or even a sorority house) would understand what it might be like to be a nerdy pledge living with all brothers (or sisters) in that house! It could be like a continuous Hell Week! The two GODs that I roomed with at the ZAP fraternity on that college campus worked hard to help me survive being that pledge! To find out if they succeeded, you’ll have to read the book! AND ONLY PROVIDE GOOD REVIEWS OF THE NOVEL! For additional information: Write Keith Mallory at [email protected]

And the biggest question in the bizarre chain of events is not what, or how, but why? Wounded Little Gods is a tale that brings mythology to a sci-fi thriller that's filled with a sense of place--a place where gods are in many ways human and point to the ways in which humans can be inhumane. • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Black Gods written by Femi Ojo-Ade and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These stories explore, and attempt to define the inexorable new world of emigration and globalisation, fragmented and uncertain, where the legacy of racism and colonialism confuses, prevails, or takes on new forms. The author and his protagonists are the children of the independence movement - the black privileged bourgeoisie, educated abroad and lecturers at universities of world renown; but also the crooks and anonymous odd-jobbers on the streets of the cities. They are cultural hybrids and unwanted aliens in ruthless pursuit of money; their children in pursuit of paper qualifications and fast cars, racing into modernity, without asking what it might mean. Then there is the question of the black complex: symbol of black freedom and solidarity, and the root of racism and inferiority. The author is a professor of French and Francophone Studies. His works include Exlie at Home, and Dead End, One Little Girl's Dream for which he won the Association of Nigerian Authors' Prize for Children's Literature.
