Book The Mountain Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mountain Classic Reprint written by Jules Michelet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mountain Of the present volume, M. Michelet himself says, that the greater portion of it springs from our own travels, and relates what we ourselves have seen. It does not interfere with great scientific labours. It derives its interest from our friendly rela tions with that lofty Nature, so grand but so indulgent, which reveals itself willingly to those who sincerely love it. The reader will see with what a degree of intimacy we learned to admire the Patriarchs of the Alps. We cherish a grateful sentiment towards those august giants - those sublime mountains in Whose bosom we found ourselves so tenderly sheltered, and which so generously poured out to us their calm, profound, and serene soul. Book The Playground of Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Playground of Europe Classic Reprint written by Leslie Stephen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Playground of Europe My Dear Loppe, Twenty-one years ago we climbed Mont Blanc together to watch the sunset from the summit. Less than a year ago we observed the same phenomenon from the foot of the mountain. The intervening years have probably made little difference in the sunset. If they have made some difference in our powers of reaching the best point of view, they have, I hope, diminished neither our admiration of such spectacles, nor our pleasure in each other's companionship. If, indeed, I have retained my love of the Alps, it has been in no small degree owing to you. Many walks in your company, some of which are described in this volume, have confirmed both our friendship and our common worship of the mountains. I wish, therefore, to connect your name with this new edition of my old attempt to set forth the delights of Alpine rambling. No one understands the delights better than you, and no one, I am sure, will be a more lenient critic of the work of an old friend. Book The Pilgrim in the Shadow of the Jungfrau Alp Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pilgrim in the Shadow of the Jungfrau Alp Classic Reprint written by George Barrell Cheever and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim in the Shadow of the Jungfrau Alp I wish all my readers a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. May their holidays be graced with good cheer, and what is infinitely better, may the grace of Him, whose love gives us our true holidays, make every heart a temple of gratitude and holy joy. A Pilgrim may wander all over the earth, and find no spot in the world, where men are bound to God by so many ties of mercy, as we are in our own dear native country, or where old and young, rich and poor, have so much cause for heartfelt rejoicing. Therefore, an American, wherever he goes in the world, should go with the feeling that his own country is the best in the world. Not as a proud feeling, let him carry it, but a gentle one, a quiet feeling behind all other moods and varieties of thought, like the sense of domestic happiness, which makes a man sure that his own home is the sweetest of all homes. So, wherever an American goes, the image of his country, like a lake among the mountains, should, as a mirror, receive and reflect the world's surrounding imagery. He should see all other countries in the light of his own. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Dear Appalachia

Download or read book Dear Appalachia written by Emily Satterwhite and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much criticism has been directed at negative stereotypes of Appalachia perpetuated by movies, television shows, and news media. Books, on the other hand, often draw enthusiastic praise for their celebration of the simplicity and authenticity of the Appalachian region. Dear Appalachia: Readers, Identity, and Popular Fiction since 1878 employs the innovative new strategy of examining fan mail, reviews, and readers' geographic affiliations to understand how readers have imagined the region and what purposes these imagined geographies have served for them. As Emily Satterwhite traces the changing visions of Appalachia across the decades, from the Gilded Age (1865--1895) to the present, she finds that every generation has produced an audience hungry for a romantic version of Appalachia. According to Satterwhite, best-selling fiction has portrayed Appalachia as a distinctive place apart from the mainstream United States, has offered cosmopolitan white readers a sense of identity and community, and has engendered feelings of national and cultural pride. Thanks in part to readers' faith in authors as authentic representatives of the regions they write about, Satterwhite argues, regional fiction often plays a role in creating and affirming regional identity. By mapping the geographic locations of fans, Dear Appalachia demonstrates that mobile white readers in particular, including regional elites, have idealized Appalachia as rooted, static, and protected from commercial society in order to reassure themselves that there remains an "authentic" America untouched by global currents. Investigating texts such as John Fox Jr.'s The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1908), Harriette Arnow's The Dollmaker (1954), James Dickey's Deliverance (1970), and Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain (1997), Dear Appalachia moves beyond traditional studies of regional fiction to document the functions of these narratives in the lives of readers, revealing not only what people have thought about Appalachia, but why.

Book Summer Months Among the Alps

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summer Months Among the Alps: With the Ascent of Monte Rosa The materials have been collected from a complete journal which I kept in 1855, when Mr. W. Dundas accompanied me throughout nearly the whole of the journey, and from notes taken and letters written in 1856, when, with my brother and a friend, I visited the valleys and mountain passes to the south and east of Monte Rosa, in addition to retracing my steps over a great deal of old ground. My object has been to describe, at some length, the grander and wilder features of the scenery, and some of the most interesting and exciting of the expeditions which I have had the good fortune to make successfully; passing over the less magnificent, but more beaten, routes with only such notice as is necessary to preserve the continuity of the march, and to enable a reader to follow my course without difficulty. Book Adventures on the High Mountains

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures on the High Mountains: Romantic Incidents Perils of Travel, Sport, and Exploration Throughout the World It is a curious fact that until two or three generations ago men did not see beauty in mountain scenery. To them the mountains were always forbidding, full of terror, awful, never alluring or fascinating. Towering peaks, rugged glaciers, lofty precipices, dark ravines, stupendous crags were things to shudder at and avoid. It is sometimes said that the mountains have lost their terrors, and certainly men seek them in our day from pure love of them, undeterred by the dangers and difficulties which must still be encountered by those who would scale their heights, or penetrate into their recesses. The exploits of Alpine climbers are wonderful for the enthusiasm and the daring which they display; and the achievements of others who have braved the same perils in pursuit of science or commerce show a not less adventurous spirit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from By the Roaring Reuss: Idylls and Stories of the Alps To me the Urseren valley is a delightful spot; its mountains, meadows and streams are a joy; whilst its people are my friends; and I have only sought in these Idylls to introduce them to others. I have used a "raconteur's" privilege of dealing with dates, events, and places pretty freely; especially has this been so with my use of the Longobard name simply as a family designation. This has been done in order to give these stories a sequence of action and interest. To those who have helped me with information, or suggested ideas, I tender my grateful thanks; desiring to acknowledge my indebtedness to others for whatsoever aid they may have given. I hope those who may read these Idylls will find pleasurable profit in doing so; then I shall have realised one of my "heart's desires."
