When you read this story about the bond between this mother and her marine son, the depth of that bond will be as clear as Aaron's crystal blue eyes. Those eyes, which were the only part of her sons face left untouched by the fire, were what she focused on. He was only in Iraq ten weeks when Marine combat correspondent Cpl. Aaron Mankin was severely injured by one of the largest roadside bombs to date. His injuries were life-threatening, but, Aaron chose not just to survive, he chose to live the best life he could for his family. It has always been about family when it comes to Aaron. During an interview Diana was asked about what she was most proud of when it came to Aaron. His perseverance in continuing to under go surgery after surgery to rebuild his scared face, arms, and hands, were at the top of her list, but, her answer surprised them. Diana slowly raised her head and looked into the eyes of the lady asking the question. Tears glistening as she replied, "His spirit." She continued to try and explain the heart of her hero son. "All the surgeries, the pain...the weeks of recovery...then the cycle begins again...are not something that he endures for his own benefit. Aaron continues to do what the doctors ask of him, for the benefit of those warriors who are still fighting, and will be in need of these new techniques and depth of care sooner than later. He continues so his children won't be ashamed of the way he looks, of the scars on his face or his inability to perform a simple act, such as assembling a wagon or bike on Christmas Eve. Yes, it's his spirit that I am most proud of. " From the first page to the last, you will see that bond between mother and son, you will feel an intimate connection to them both, you will come to understand the heart of her hero son, and you will be touched by the fortitude they show, as this mom openly shares herself, her marine, and those who became family along their journey of recovery.

Book Tastes Like War

Download or read book Tastes Like War written by Grace M. Cho and published by Feminist Press at CUNY. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finalist for the 2021 National Book Award for Nonfiction Winner of the 2022 Asian/Pacific American Award in Literature A TIME and NPR Best Book of the Year in 2021 This evocative memoir of food and family history is "somehow both mouthwatering and heartbreaking... [and] a potent personal history" (Shelf Awareness). Grace M. Cho grew up as the daughter of a white American merchant marine and the Korean bar hostess he met abroad. They were one of few immigrants in a xenophobic small town during the Cold War, where identity was politicized by everyday details—language, cultural references, memories, and food. When Grace was fifteen, her dynamic mother experienced the onset of schizophrenia, a condition that would continue and evolve for the rest of her life. Part food memoir, part sociological investigation, Tastes Like War is a hybrid text about a daughter’s search through intimate and global history for the roots of her mother’s schizophrenia. In her mother’s final years, Grace learned to cook dishes from her parent’s childhood in order to invite the past into the present, and to hold space for her mother’s multiple voices at the table. And through careful listening over these shared meals, Grace discovered not only the things that broke the brilliant, complicated woman who raised her—but also the things that kept her alive. “An exquisite commemoration and a potent reclamation.” —Booklist (starred review) “A wrenching, powerful account of the long-term effects of the immigrant experience.” —Kirkus Reviews

Book A Mother s War

Download or read book A Mother s War written by Yvonne Collinson Heath and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yvonne Collinson Heath will never forget the telephone call that changed her life for ever. On 23 March 2002, her eldest son, James – a private with the Royal Logistic Corps – was found dead in mysterious circumstances at the notorious Deepcut barracks. He had a single gunshot wound to the head. It was a tragedy that to this day raises questions. A Mother’s War recounts Yvonne’s anguish at losing her son, a boy who dreamed of serving his country but died before he had even reached his 18th birthday. It is also the powerful story of an extraordinary woman who overcame adversity – including the hurt of being abandoned by her father, bullied as a child and abused by a trusted uncle – to find love and raise a son, only to see him cruelly taken from her within weeks of his joining the Army. It reveals how her decade-long quest for answers uncovered sinister secrets and a series of cover-ups that went right to the heart of Whitehall. Above all else, A Mother’s War is the story of how Yvonne’s grief triggered a search for the truth that took her to Downing Street and captured the hearts of the nation.

Book excerpt: Aaron surprised me with a large bouquet of flowers from the other side of the world, it was Mother's Day, May 8th, 2005. With him in Iraq the joy of this gift was overwhelming. Three days later my cell phone rang. I looked at the caller ID and saw it was my ex-husband. I was scared. I knew it must be bad news concerning Aaron, our youngest son. I did not want to answer that phone!!! I picked up the phone and heard Steve's voice, "Diana, Aaron's hurt," I started yelling into the phone for him to stop talking. I asked him to tell Don, my husband, because I couldn't bear to hear this over the phone. Marine Combat Correspondent, Aaron Mankin was severely wounded when the Amphibious Assault Vehicle he was in rolled over an Improvised Explosive Device near Al Qaim, Iraq. The 26 ton vehicle was blown 10 feet in the air and came crashing down in a ball of fire. Aaron dove out the back and rolled trying to extinguish the flames. Exhausted, he made peace with his maker... But, God had other plans, for us both...

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1996. During the author's decade of critical ethnography in Carpinteria, California, she has illuminated the intricate relationships between Latino families as together they build a sociopolitical community to bridge family and school alliances. How they extend their learning from the social networks to the family arena and to the personal, and in reverse, represents their protean responses to the diversity and adversity in their lives. This life-story captures the collective and individual texts of the Latino children, their parents and educators used to empower themselves to transform discontinuity in an age where continuity is increasingly foreign.
