Book excerpt: To my sense, these mighty Alpine highways have a grand poetry of their own. I lack, doubtless, that stout stomach for pure loneliness which leads your genuine mountaineer to pronounce them a desecration of the mountain stillness. As if the mountain stillness were not inviolable! Gleaming here and there against the dark sides of the gorges, unrolling their measured bands further and higher, doubling and stretching and spanning, but always climbing, they break it only to the anxious eye. The Saint Gothard road is immensely long drawn, and, if the truth be told, somewhat monotonous. As you follow it to its uppermost reaches, the landscape takes on a darker local color. Far below the wayside, the yellow Reuss tumbles and leaps and foams over a perfect torture-bed of broken rock. The higher slopes lie naked and raw, or coated with slabs of gray. The valley lifts and narrows and darkens into the scenic mountain pass of the fancy.

Book The New York Stories of Henry James

Download or read book The New York Stories of Henry James written by Henry James and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James led a wandering life, which took him far from his native shores, but he continued to think of New York City, where his family had settled for several years during his childhood, as his hometown. Here Colm Tóibín, the author of the Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel The Master, a portrait of Henry James, brings together for the first time all the stories that James set in New York City. Written over the course of James’s career and ranging from the deliciously tart comedy of the early “An International Episode” to the surreal and haunted corridors of “The Jolly Corner,” and including “Washington Square,” the poignant novella considered by many (though not, as it happens, by the author himself) to be one of James’s finest achievements, the nine fictions gathered here reflect James’s varied talents and interests as well as the deep and abiding preoccupations of his imagination. And throughout the book, as Tóibín’s fascinating introduction demonstrates, we see James struggling to make sense of a city in whose rapidly changing outlines he discerned both much that he remembered and held dear as well as everything about America and its future that he dreaded most. Stories included: The Story of a Masterpiece A Most Extraordinary Case Crawford’s Consistency An International Episode The Impressions of a Cousin The Jolly Corner Washington Square Crapy Cornelia A Round of Visits

Book The Fantastic Anatomist

Download or read book The Fantastic Anatomist written by Ronnie Bailie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-22 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compact but highly concentrated study, the author unites clinical and literary critical skills in an attempt to go beyond familiar psychological commentary on Henry James and conduct a detailed and rigorous psychoanalytic investigation into recurring and psychologically significant patterns in his major and minor fiction. Drawing freely on material from notebooks, letters, and other biographical sources, the volume centres on James's unconscious fantasies concerning the human body, mostly the damaged or incomplete human body. These core fantasies are firmly placed at the root of James's creativeness. While one of these fantasies of physical mutilation finds expression in the famous “obscure hurt” of James's late teens, the author develops a hypothesis concerning their much earlier history and their place in the larger psychological constellation of the James family. Accordingly, Henry James Senior, his wife Mary, together with William and Alice James, all figure largely in the intricate and perilous family context of Henry's creative activity. This book also includes original factual research, casting sidelights on matters such as the relation between James's early work and that of Dr Silas Weir Mitchell, and on the early history of psychoanalysis in the United States, including William James's meeting with Freud and his view of early psychoanalytic thinking, and Henry's contact as a patient with early psychoanalytic practitioners at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Book A Bundle of Letters

    Book Details:
  • Author : Henry James
  • Publisher : Good Press
  • Release : 2019-11-26
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 42 pages

Download or read book A Bundle of Letters written by Henry James and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-26 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James' humorous short story, 'A Bundle of Letters', follows several residents of a Parisian boarding house as they correspond with friends and family. Miranda Hope, a young American woman traveling solo in Europe, writes to her mother about the treatment of women abroad. Meanwhile, the other residents exchange letters filled with stereotypes and snobbery, from Violet Ray's dismissal of Miranda as "horrible" to the German professor's contempt for all non-Germans. James injects twists and turns of personality into his characters, making them more complex than simple caricatures. 'A Bundle of Letters' is a satirical take on cultural misunderstandings and national pride in late 19th-century Europe.
