Book Donald Seldin

Download or read book Donald Seldin written by Raymond S. Greenberg and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one would have blamed Donald Seldin for running away. When he arrived at Southwestern Medical College in 1951, it was a collection of hastily repurposed military shacks creaking in the wind. On practically day one he became chair of the department of medicine—when the only other full-time professors departed. By the time he stepped down thirty-six years later, Seldin had transformed a sleepy medical college into the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center—a powerhouse of research and patient care and an anchor of the city of Dallas. Raymond Greenberg, a physician-scholar, tells Seldin's story of perseverance and intellectual triumph. Drawing on interviews with Seldin's trainees and colleagues—and on Seldin's own words—Greenberg chronicles the life of the Brooklyn boy who became one of Texas's foremost citizens and taught decades of men and women to heal. A pioneering nephrologist, Seldin devoted his career to developing the specialty; educating students, residents, and fellows; caring for patients; and nurturing basic research. Seldin was a wildcatter in the best sense. He declined the comfortable prestige of Harvard and Yale and instead embraced a worthy challenge with an unflagging sense of mission. Graceful and richly detailed, The Maestro of Medicine captures an inspiring life of achievement and service.

Book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids

Download or read book The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes have taken place in the policy landscape surrounding cannabis legalization, production, and use. During the past 20 years, 25 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis and/or cannabidiol (a component of cannabis) for medical conditions or retail sales at the state level and 4 states have legalized both the medical and recreational use of cannabis. These landmark changes in policy have impacted cannabis use patterns and perceived levels of risk. However, despite this changing landscape, evidence regarding the short- and long-term health effects of cannabis use remains elusive. While a myriad of studies have examined cannabis use in all its various forms, often these research conclusions are not appropriately synthesized, translated for, or communicated to policy makers, health care providers, state health officials, or other stakeholders who have been charged with influencing and enacting policies, procedures, and laws related to cannabis use. Unlike other controlled substances such as alcohol or tobacco, no accepted standards for safe use or appropriate dose are available to help guide individuals as they make choices regarding the issues of if, when, where, and how to use cannabis safely and, in regard to therapeutic uses, effectively. Shifting public sentiment, conflicting and impeded scientific research, and legislative battles have fueled the debate about what, if any, harms or benefits can be attributed to the use of cannabis or its derivatives, and this lack of aggregated knowledge has broad public health implications. The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids provides a comprehensive review of scientific evidence related to the health effects and potential therapeutic benefits of cannabis. This report provides a research agendaâ€"outlining gaps in current knowledge and opportunities for providing additional insight into these issuesâ€"that summarizes and prioritizes pressing research needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastrointestinal motility has evolved from an esoteric laboratory tool into a sophisti cated diagnostic technique that is now widely used clinically to guide in management of complex gastrointestinal problems. Today, it is the most rapidly growing subspecialty within gastroenterology. Previously, many of the gastrointestinal motility problems were either ignored or attributed to a disturbance of "psyche." But with the growing knowledge and understanding of how a dysfunction of the gastrointestinal muscle and nerves can cause disease, we are at the threshold of a revolution in our approach to the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal motility disorders. The purpose of this book is to serve as a useful, up-to-date reference manual and guide for the diagnostic and therapeutic approach towards common adult and pediatric gastrointestinal motility problems. In order to enhance the understanding of these disor ders, a problem-oriented approach has been chosen, and wherever possible the authors have provided clinical case scenarios to illustrate their message. The emphasis has been on how to diagnose and treat motility disorders rather than to provide an encyclopedic infor mation. The reference list at the end of each chapter should enable the enthusiast to seek further information. Some of the material presented in this book has been derived from the proceedings of the annual University ofIowa College of Medicine GI Motility Symposia.

Book Infertility in the Male

  • ISBN : 1139483242
  • Pages : 691 pages

Download or read book Infertility in the Male written by Larry I. Lipshultz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-24 with total page 691 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of this canonical text on male reproductive medicine will cement the book's market-leading position. Practitioners across many specialties - including urologists, gynecologists, reproductive endocrinologists, medical endocrinologists and many in internal medicine and family practice – will see men with suboptimal fertility and reproductive problems. The book provides an excellent source of timely, well-considered information for those training in this young and rapidly evolving field. While several recent books provide targeted 'cookbooks' for those in a male reproductive laboratory, or quick reference for practising generalists, the modern, comprehensive reference providing both a background for male reproductive medicine as well as clinical practice information based on that foundation has been lacking until now. The book has been extensively revised with a particular focus on modern molecular medicine. Appropriate therapeutic interventions are highlighted throughout.

Book Molecular Markers and Targeted Therapy for Hepatobiliary Tumors volume I B

Download or read book Molecular Markers and Targeted Therapy for Hepatobiliary Tumors volume I B written by Yunfei Xu and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Download the ebooks for this Research Topic: Volume I.A: ¦PDF¦ ¦EPUB Volume I.B: ¦PDF¦ ¦ EPUB Hepatobiliary tumor, mainly including hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer, is a group of highly aggressive malignancies. Hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer have different biological characters, histopathological traits, and treatment strategies, but have similar clinical features such as silent early symptom and extremely poor prognosis. The diagnostic, predictive or prognostic tumor biomarkers of hepatobiliary cancers are in unmet need. In contrast to the poor outcome, the treatment options to hepatobiliary cancers are very limited. It is still controversial about the effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy of hepatobiliary cancer. FDA-approved targeted drugs are only Sorafenib and Lenvatinib for hepatocellular carcinoma, and Pemigatinib for cholangiocarcinoma. Unfortunately, these drugs are only effective for 5%-30% patients. Therefore, more attention should be called upon on investigating effective biomarkers and drug targets, stratifying high-risk patients, guiding precise treatments, and developing therapeutic strategies for hepatobiliary cancers. This Research Topic aims at discussing the current knowledge and proceedings of diagnostic, predictive and prognostic tumor biomarkers in hepatobiliary cancer, and presenting the recent advances on new drug targets and potential targeted therapies of hepatobiliary cancer. We welcome submissions of Review, Mini-Review, Clinical Trial and Original Research articles covering, but not limited to, the following topics: 1. new diagnostic/prognostic factors, biomarkers and/or risk factors in hepatobiliary tumors 2. new drug targets, and oncogenic or tumor suppressive molecular mechanism of the novel targets 3. new intervention or targeted therapy in hepatobiliary tumors 4. new findings of bioinformatics or high-throughput methods such as mass spectrometry and genome-wide association studies or which may help screen the potential biomarkers of hepatobiliary tumors 5. clinical studies such as cohort study or RCT to identify new risks or treatment therapies in hepatobiliary tumors 6. basic, pharmacological, preclinical or clinical study of potential drugs targeting hepatobiliary tumors Please note: manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analysis of public genomic or transcriptomic databases which are not accompanied by validation (independent cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo) are out of scope for this section and will not be accepted as part of this Research Topic.
