Four types of constructions are examined in particular: simple two-place predicates, ditransitive three-place predicates, copular constructions and progressive constructions. In relation to these, the formal features that are examined include the so called "phi-features" [Person, Gender, Number], verbal TAM features [Tense, Aspect, Mood], and Case and Definiteness features [Case, Def] on nominals. The way these features interact with the possible word order variation permitted by each type of construction is accounted for in light of recent developments in Minimalist Syntax (Chomsky 1998, 1999, 2001). The title of the book reflects a change in the way that Chomskyan generative syntax is perceived: syntactic operations are driven by the need to check the morphological properties of words, suggesting therefore a bottom-up approach to grammar. The book is a recommended reading for students and researchers of syntactic theory and Arabic grammar alike.

First, it investigates the internal structure of words and clauses in Standard Arabic (SA), in the light of recent developments of Government and Binding Theory (GB). Second, it argues for a specific theory of typology, and proposes a particular view of how parametrization can be construed and executed. SA is a language used throughout the Arab world, in contrast to specific local dialects which are limited to a particular area. The language has a number of features which make it particularly suitable for cross-linguistic comparative morpho-syntax, as well as research in different modules of the theory of grammar. SA morphology is essentially non-concatenative, though a rich analytic affixation system makes word formation hierarchical. Word order in SA is basically VSO, but the language has alternative SVO structures as well. Sentences can be 'nominal' (i.e. with no verb or copula realized at surface structure), or verbal. Arguments can be left syntacti cally unexpressed (i.e. SA is a null argument language). SA is an agreement language, with a rich and complex agreement system interacting with word order, pronominal incorporation, and expletive structures. It also has a productive morphological case system. Tense, Aspect, Modal, and Negation properties interact in intriguing ways. Finally, SA's DP system exhibits interesting complementary distributions between overt determiners, genitive complements, and possessive markers. It also uses different licensing strategies for Genitive Case marking.

The main focus of the book is on the different positions of the finite verb in the Germanic SVO languages. In addition, other syntactic phenomena (null subjects, transitive expletive constructions and object shift) and other language families (Romance, Semitic and Slavic) are discussed. A common explanation for all of the discussed phenomena is proposed: If and only if the features for person are distinctively marked by the agreement morphology, the agreement affixes are listed separately in the lexicon and project phrases of their own in syntax where they attract the verb to the head positions and allow the specifier positions to be filled by various phonologically (un)realized elements. Special attention is given to issues of historical development and child language acquisition.

Chapter two discusses in detail the relative clause, the status of the relative forms and their morphosyntax. Chapter three concerns itself with complement clauses and how the various structures involved contrast in these languages. The purpose of the fourth chapter is to give a sketchy overview of the syntax of joined structures in English, Moroccan Arabic and Berber, and discuss in detail the main characteristics of coordination in each language. Approaches to verbal grammatical categories - the constituents of verbal systems - often rely on either semantic-pragmatic or syntactic analyses. This research bridges the gap between these two distinct approaches through a detailed analysis of Taxis, Aspect, Tense and Modality in Standard Arabic. This is accomplished by showing, firstly, some basic theoretical concerns shared by both schools of thought, and, secondly, the extent to which semantic structures and invariant meanings mirror syntactic representations. Maher Bahloul’s findings also indicate that the basic constituents of the verbal system in Arabic, namely the Perfect and the Imperfect, are systematically differentiated through their invariant semantic features in a markedness relation. Finally, this study suggests that the syntactic derivation of verbal and nominal clauses are sensitive to whether or not verbal categories are specified for their feature values, providing therefore a principled explanation to a long-standing debate. This reader friendly book will appeal to both specialists and students of Arabic linguistics, language and syntax.
