Book A Monument to the Memory of John Wilkes Booth Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Monument to the Memory of John Wilkes Booth Classic Reprint written by Stewart Winning McClelland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Monument to the Memory of John Wilkes Booth So many things have been told about Pink Parker and his monument which do not agree with the facts, that we are going to attempt to tell the story as we have been able to get it from his grandsons and people in Troy who knew' him and loved him. But first, let us see the picture as it was in the summer of 1921 when Pink was already more than half blind, sick and living with his son in Georgia. The Brooklyn Eagle of Sunday morning, June 5, 1921, had this to say: Mrs. C. D. Brooks, president of the Woman's League of Republican Voters in Alabama, has issued a call to good citizens, whatever their party affiliations, to join with the League in plans to remove the monument to John Wilkes Booth, the as sassin of Abraham Lincoln, which is still standing in Troy, Alabama, where there is also a State Normal School. This was erected by popular subscription in 1866. The sentiment that condoned the political murder of the most lovable man in his tory is a curious thing to study after the lapse of more than half a century. The whole South of today honors Lincoln's memory. There are no pilgrims to the grave of John Wilkes Booth or to his monument. Wilkes Booth, the Assassinator of President Lincoln Still maintaining a taciturn demeanor and strict, unbroken silence, the new member, without replying, intimated that the efforts of those who held him in custody were entirely in vain, and that he would not betray anything that he had learned since he had been in the place, no matter what course of procedure might be adopted with regard to him. Finding he was thus resolute, a door was at once thrown open before him and he again found himself in the room in which he had sworn to preserve inviolate the secrets of the order with which he had voluntarily connected himself. Book excerpt: "The Legend of John Wilkes Booth is a story of how collective memories and popular histories collide with, clash, and sometimes overcome mainstream accounts of the past. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Escape and Suicide of John Wilkes Booth: Or the First True Account of Lincoln's Assassination, Containing a Complete Confession by Booth, Many Years After the Crime In the preparation of this book I have neither spared time or money, since I became satisfied that John Wilkes Booth was not killed, as has been sup posed, at the Garrett home in Virginia, on the 26th day of April, 1865, and present this volume of col lated facts, which I submit for the correction of his tory, respecting the assassination of President Abra ham Lincoln, and the death or escape of John Wilkes Booth. Personally, I know nothing of President Lincoln, and knew nothing of John Wilkes Booth until my meeting with John St. Helen, at my home in Texas, in the year 1872. The picture which John St. Helen left with me for the future identification of himself in his true name and personality, was first identified by Gen. D. D. Dana, of Lubec, Maine, as John Wilkes Booth, January 17, 1898. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life, Crime, and Capture of John Wilkes Booth: And the Pursuit, Trial and Execution of His Accomplices Some very deliberate and extraordinary movements were made by a handsome and extremely well-dressed young man in the city of Washington last Friday. At about half-past eleven o'clock A.M., this person, whose name is J. Wilkes Booth, by profession an actor, and recently engaged in oil speculations, sauntered into Ford's Theater, on Tenth, between E and F streets, and exchanged greetings with the man at the box-office. In the conversation which ensured, the ticket agent informed Booth that a box was taken for Mr. Lincoln and General Grant, who were expected to visit the theater, and contribute to the benefit of Miss Laura Keene, and satisfy the curiosity of a large audience. Mr. Booth went away with a jest, and a lightly-spoken "Good afternoon." Strolling down to Pumphreys' stable, on C street, in the rear of the National Hotel, he engaged a saddle horse, a high-strung, fast, beautiful bay mare, telling Mr. Pumphreys that he should call for her in the middle of the afternoon. From here he went to the Kirkwood Hotel, on the corner of Pennsylvania avenue and Twelfth street, where, calling for a card and a sheet of notepaper, he sat down and wrote upon the first as follows: For Mr. Andrew Joknson: - I don't wish to disturb you; are you at home? J. W. Booth. To this message, which was sent up by the obliging clerk, Mr. Johnson responded that he was very busily engaged. Mr. Booth smiled, and turning to his sheet of note-paper, wrote on it. The fact, if fact it is, that he had been disappointed in not obtaining an examination of the Vice-President's apartment and a knowledge of the Vice-President's probable whereabouts the ensuing evening, in no way affected his composure. The note, the contents of which are unknown, was signed and sealed within a few moments. Booth arose, bowed to an acquaintance, and passed into the street. His elegant person was seen on the avenue a few minutes, and was withdrawn into the Metropolitan Hotel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from J. Wilkes Booth: An Account of His Sojourn in Southern Maryland After the Assassination of Abraham Lincoln, His Passage Across the Potomac, and His Death in Virginia In writing this little book, it is my intention to tell the reader of the part I performed in the great war between the States, and my connection with the flight of the criminal whose deed closed the bloodiest chapter in our country's history. No act ever committed has called forth such universal execration as the murder of that great and good man, Abraham Lincoln. To-day I speak of the murdered President as "great and good;" thirty years ago I regarded him only as the enemy of my country. Book Right Or Wrong God Judge Me

Download or read book Right Or Wrong God Judge Me written by John Wilkes Booth and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of the known writings of John Wilkes Booth are included in this collection. Of this wealth of material, the most important item is a previously unpublished twenty-page manuscript discovered at the Players Club in Manhattan. Written by Booth in 1860 in a form similar to Mark Antony's funeral oration in Julius Caesar, it makes clear that his hatred for Lincoln was formed early and was deeply rooted in his pro-slavery and pro-Southern ideology. Also included in the nearly seventy documents are six love letters to a seventeen-year-old Boston girl, Isabel Sumner, written during the summer of 1864, when Booth was conspiring against Lincoln; several explicit statements of Booth's political convictions; and the diary he kept during his futile twelve-day flight after the assassination. The documents show that Booth, although opinionated and impulsive, was not an isolated madman. Rather, he was a highly successful actor and ladies' man who also was a Confederate agent. Along with many others, he believed that Lincoln was a tyrant whose policies threatened civil liberties. --From publisher's description.
