Book A Synoptic Review of the Ant Genera Hymenoptera Formicidae of the Phillippines

Download or read book A Synoptic Review of the Ant Genera Hymenoptera Formicidae of the Phillippines written by David M. General and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This large work on the ant genera of the Philippines improves our understanding of the amazing biodiversity of the archipelago. Twelve genera, including 3 undescribed, are recorded from the country for the first time for a total of 92 genera. The simplified keys will allow students to identify ants to the generic level. In addition, the species list has more than doubled to 474 valid names since Baltazar (1966). The authors hope to spur interest in the study of ants in the Philippines since the ant diversity of many islands is still largely unexplored.

Book A revision of the ant genus Mystrium in the Malagasy region with description of six new species and remarks on Amblyopone and Stigmatomma Hymenoptera Formicidae Amblyoponinae

Download or read book A revision of the ant genus Mystrium in the Malagasy region with description of six new species and remarks on Amblyopone and Stigmatomma Hymenoptera Formicidae Amblyoponinae written by Masashi Yoshimura and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ant genus Mystrium in the Malagasy region is revised and six new species are described from Madagascar and its surrounding islands. The discovery of the division of females into major and minor forms was the key to solving this omplicated taxonomic puzzle. We found that in some species of Mystrium, major or minor workers develop as reproductives. In Mystrium, morphological comparison among individuals from the same phenotype, not from their reproductive or functional role is important. Here we propose a new taxonomic framework for interesting and mysterious genus. All species are reclassified into three subgroups based on the reproductive function, and innovative pictorial keys to the species for all castes and sexes are developed. The associations between existing names and males are reexamined, and males of eight of the ten Malagasy species are described or redescribed.

Book Revision of the Middle American Clade of the Ant Genus Stenamma Westwood Hymenoptera Formicidae Myrmicinae

Download or read book Revision of the Middle American Clade of the Ant Genus Stenamma Westwood Hymenoptera Formicidae Myrmicinae written by Michael G. Branstetter and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stenamma is a cryptic ?leaf-litter? ant genus that occurs in mesic forest habitats throughout the Holarctic region, Central America, and part of northwestern South America (Colombia and Ecuador). The genus was thought to be restricted primarily to the temperate zone, but recent collecting efforts have uncovered a large radiation of Neotropical forms, which rival the Holarctic species in terms of morphological and behavioral diversity. By inferring a broad-scale molecular phylogeny of Stenamma, Branstetter (2012) showed that all Neotropical species belong to a diverse Middle American clade (MAC), and that this clade is sister to an almost completely geographically separated Holarctic clade (HOC). Here, the Middle American clade of Stenamma is revised to recognize 40 species, of which 33 are described as new. Included in the revision are a key to species based on the worker caste, and for each species where possible, descriptions and images of workers and queens, images of males, information on geographic distribution, descriptions of intraspecific variation, and notes on natural history. Several species groups are defined, but the majority of species remain unassigned due to a lack of diagnostic morphological character states for most molecular clades.
