Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil engineering structures tend to be fabricated from materials that respond elastically at normal levels of loading. Most such materials, however, would exhibit a marked and ductile inelasticity if the structure were overloaded by accident or by some improbable but naturally occuring phenomeon. Indeed, the very presence of such ductility constitutes an important safety provision for large-scale constructions where human life is at risk. In the comprehensive evaluation of safety in structural design, it is therefore unrealistic not to consider the effects of ductility. This book sets out to show that the bringing together of the theory and methods of mathematical programming with the mathematical theory of plasticity furnishes a model which has a unifying theoretical nature and is entirely representative of observed structural behaviour. The contents of the book provide a review of the relevant aspects of mathematical programming and plasticity theory, together with a detailed presentation of the most interesting and potentially useful applications in both framed and continuum structures: ultimate strength and elastoplastic deformability; shakedown and practical upper bounds on deformation measures; evolutive dynamic response; large displacements and instability; stochastic and fuzzy programming for representing uncertainty in ultimate strength calculations. Besides providing a ready fund of computational algorithms, mathematical programming invests applications in mechanics with a refined mathematical formalism, rich in fundamental theorems, which often gives addi- tional insight into known results and occasionally lead to new ones. In addition to its obvious practical utility, the educational value of the material thoroughly befits a university discipline.

Download or read book Fixed Points written by Stepan Karamardian and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fixed Points: Algorithms and Applications covers the proceedings of the First International Conference on Computing Fixed Points with Applications, held in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina on June 26-28, 1974. This book is composed of 21 chapters and starts with reviews of finding roots of polynomials by pivoting procedures and the relations between convergence and labeling in approximation algorithm. The next chapters deal with the principles of complementary pivot theory and the Markovian decision chains; the method of continuation for Brouwer fixed point calculation; a fixed point approach to stability in cooperative games; and computation of fixed points in a nonconvex region. Other chapters discuss a computational comparison of fixed point algorithms, the fundamentals of union jack triangulations, and some aspects of Mann's iterative method for approximating fixed points. The final chapters consider the application of fixed point algorithms to the analysis of tax policies and the pricing for congestion in telephone networks. This book will prove useful to mathematicians, computer scientists, and advance mathematics students.

Download or read book Finite Element Bibliography written by Gerard De Vries and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976-12 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thjs bibliography had its inception in 1967, when the compilers first attempted a comprehensive cov erage of the finite element literature using both manual and computer-based retrieval. Initially, the data base was stored on a card index, but this was subsequently transferred to punched cards and magnetic tape. Computer processing was adopted at an early stage to derive the three index formats from the data base. Over the subsequent years, several versions of the bibliography were produced, with two of these being made available in a report form to other researchers. From the widespread interest in these documents, it became evident that there was a need for a commercially-available comprehensive bibliography in this area. A major effort was undertaken to revise, update, and extend the data base, resulting in this present volume. The bibliography covers the period 1956-1975 primarily, although some earlier publications of histori cal interest are included. The citations are not restricted to the English language and documents are listed in many languages and from diverse places of origin. All publication formats were accepted, so that references will be found to books, monographs, journal papers and articles, theses, dissertations, reports, surveys, and the like.
