Book A Modern Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Modern Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by George E. Merkley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Modern Rhetoric The plan of the book is psychologic. Informal composition is taken up almost at the beginning, and is treated broadly as a whole before the closer study of sentences and paragraphs is introduced. The pupil is thus encouraged to express himself freely, before he is required to write, as Quintilian puts it, with force, point, and vehemence of style. The stages through which he passes from elementary to formal composition are easy and gradual. All help is given to make him feel that composition is a practical and profitable exercise. Book Essays on Classical Rhetoric and Modern Discourse

Download or read book Essays on Classical Rhetoric and Modern Discourse written by Robert J. Connors and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteen essays by leading scholars in English, speech communication, education, and philosophy explore the vitality of the classical rhetorical tradition and its influence on both contemporary discourse studies and the teaching of writing. Some of the essays investigate theoretical and historical issues. Others show the bearing of classical rhetoric on contemporary problems in composition, thus blending theory and practice. Common to the varied approaches and viewpoints expressed in this volume is one central theme: the 20th-century revival of rhetoric entails a recovery of the classical tradition, with its marriage of a rich and fully articulated theory with an equally efficacious practice. A preface demonstrates the contribution of Edward P. J.Corbett to the 20th-century revival, and a last chapter includes a bibliography of his works.

Book Modern Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by Dana O. Jensen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Composition and Rhetoric The general aim of this book is to give the beginning college student a thorough training in the fundamentals of composition. We have tried to include such theory, fact, and practice as are necessary to competent, clear, and straightforward writing; at the same time we have attempted to make plain to the student how he may express himself as an individual. We have not addressed the professional writer, or even the accomplished amateur, but the person who needs instruction and training before he can perform the requirements of everyday college and post-college life. The particular aim of the book, however, is more specific. In any course and in any textbook there must be some concern for individual differences in students differences in training, in ability, and in personality. But in spite of the varying needs of students there must be some regimentation, as regrettable as regimentation may seem to the instructor who recognizes his students as individuals. This need of basic standardization we have attempted to meet in Part I, which includes those fundamentals of organization, paragraph structure, and sentence structure that every writer must command before clear communication is possible. Such details as the, student may be sup posed to have learned before entering college, and such as he will need to know only for special occasions, we have placed in appendixes. Part I is addressed primarily to the average student. Part II deals with the various special kinds of writing which most students will at one time or another have to do. It is thus designed to furnish the next major step in the training of the average student who has mastered the more fundamental principles outlined in Part I. Book Introduction to Classical Legal Rhetoric

Download or read book Introduction to Classical Legal Rhetoric written by Michael H. Frost and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyers, law students and their teachers all too frequently overlook the most comprehensive, adaptable and practical analysis of legal discourse ever devised: the classical art of rhetoric. Classical analysis of legal reasoning, methods and strategy is the foundation and source for most modern theories on the topic. Beginning with Aristotle's Rhetoric and culminating with Cicero's De Oratore and Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria, Greek and Roman rhetoricians created a clear, experience-based theoretical framework for analyzing legal discourse. This book is the first to systematically examine the connections between classical rhetoric and modern legal discourse. It traces the history of legal rhetoric from the classical period to the present day and shows how modern theorists have unknowingly benefited from the classical works. It also applies classical rhetorical principles to modern appellate briefs and judicial opinions to demonstrate how a greater familiarity with the classical sources can deepen our understanding of legal reasoning.

Book American Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Composition and Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by Donald Davidson A. Professor of English and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Composition and Rhetoric Twenty years ago, in'the Preface to the First Edition, the principles upon which this textbook is based were briefly set forth. Since that time, wars and social convulsions, technology and science, have wrought great changes in the world, and so have changed in some degree the context in which the principles of a textbook like this must be applied. But only the context is changed; the principles are not. In its principles the art of rhetoric is not political, nor, in our modern relativist sense, can it ever b scientific. The more shifting the context, the greater the need for firmness as to principles. The criticism to which our educational practices are being subjected, from without and within the Grove of Academe, gives sharp contemporary emphasis to these truths. Book A System of Rhetoric Classic Reprint

Download or read book A System of Rhetoric Classic Reprint written by C. W. Bardeen and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Rhetoric In presenting to the public a new text-book on Rhetoric, the author asks attention to these features as characteristic: (1.) It is kept in the foreground throughout, that the fundamental law of rhetoric is adaptation; that the form of discourse, like the fashion of clothing, has no intrinsic beauty, but is or is not artistic as it does or does not produce the effect designed, at the time and under the circumstances. (2.) That the student may look on rhetoric as an art, not like trigonometry which he may use, but like arithmetic which he must use, its most important laws are developed in the practical treatment of Conversation and Letter-Writing. The boy who does not care to be taught speech-making and verse-writing may be glad of help to feel at ease among strangers, and to write a business letter. To this is added instruction in Narration and Description. These are forms of composition in which the essential element is not literary taste but personal experience. Any man may be called upon to tell or to write for the newspaper what he has done or seen, and every man should be able to do it well. Book Writing and Speaking Vol 2

Download or read book Writing and Speaking Vol 2 written by Charles Sears Baldwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Writing and Speaking, Vol. 2: A Text-Book of Rhetoric The separate publication of Part II in this volume is intended to supply consecutive advanced study for school classes that have already mastered the principles of composi tion in simpler applications. It deals with the library, both for the compilation of facts and for the study of literary form; but its main object is to lead a student's own writing and speaking forward by making it appeal to all his widening interests. In order to indicate the plan of the whole work, as well as to suggest profitable lines of review for those who have studied the elements in another text-book, the topics of Part I, which is also published separately, have been retained in the table of contents (pages xv - xviii). The few refer cucos to Part I in the text are for the convenience of students who have used that book; the summaries and specific exer cises of review, mainly for those who have used another. But the present volume, given any systematic elementary study, is complete in itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Classical Rhetoric in English Poetry

Download or read book Classical Rhetoric in English Poetry written by Brian Vickers and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back in print after 17 years, this is a concise history of rhetoric as it relates to structure, genre, and style, with special reference to English literature and literary criticism from Ancient Greece to the end of the 18th century. The core of the book is a quite original argument that the figures of rhetoric were not mere mechanical devices, were not, as many believed, a "nuisance, a quite sterile appendage to rhetoric to which (unaccountably) teachers, pupils, and writers all over the world devoted much labor for over 2,000 years." Rather, Vickers demonstrates, rhetoric was a stylized representation of language and human feelings. Vickers supplements his argument through analyses of the rhetorical and emotional structure of four Renaissance poems. He also defines 16 of the most common figures of rhetoric, citing examples from the classics, the Bible, and major English poets from Chaucer to Pope.
