Book excerpt: "This study investigates the decadal variability of the Arctic Ocean - Greenland, Iceland, Norwegian seas (GIN Sea) system and possible mechanisms driving variability. The theoretical foundation of this work is the theory of Proshutinsky & Johnson [1997] that two major climate states of the Arctic - Anticyclonic Circulation Regime (ACCR) and Cyclonic Circulation Regime (CCR) - are driven by variations in the freshwater contents of the Arctic Ocean and the GIN Sea. It is hypothesized that the Arctic Ocean and the GIN Sea form an auto-oscillatory ice-ocean-atmosphere climate system with a quasi-decadal period of interannual variability. The system is characterized by two stages: (1) cold Arctic (ACCR) warm GIN Sea with weak interaction between the basins; (2) warm Arctic (CCR) - cold GIN Sea with intense interaction between the basins. Surface air temperature and dynamic height gradients between the basins drive the auto-oscillations. This study investigates interactions between the Arctic Ocean and the GIN Sea. To test the hypothesis, a simple model of the Arctic Ocean and Greenland Sea has been developed. The Arctic shelf processes have been parameterized in a box model coupled with an Arctic Ocean module. Both the Arctic Ocean and Greenland Sea modules are coupled with a thermodynamic ice model and atmospheric models. Several model experiments have been conducted to adjust the model and to reproduce the auto-oscillatory behavior of the climate system. One of the major results of this work is the simulation of auto-oscillatory behavior of the Arctic Ocean - GIN Sea climate system. Periodical solutions obtained with seasonally varying forcing for scenarios with high and low interaction between the regions reproduce major anomalies in the ocean thermohaline structure, sea ice volume, and fresh water fluxes attributed to ACCR and CCR regimes. According to the simulation results, the characteristic time scale of the Arctic Ocean - GIN Sea system variability reproduced in the model is about 10-15 years. This outcome is consistent with theory of Proshutinsky and Johnson [1997] and shows that the Arctic Ocean - GIN Sea can be viewed as a unique auto-oscillating system"--Leaves iii-iv.

Book excerpt: Recent well documented reductions in the thickness and extent of Arctic sea ice cover, which can be linked to the warming climate, are affecting the global climate system and are also affecting the global economic system as marine access to the Arctic region and natural resource development increase. Satellite data show that during each of the past six summers, sea ice cover has shrunk to its smallest in three decades. The composition of the ice is also changing, now containing a higher fraction of thin first-year ice instead of thicker multi-year ice. Understanding and projecting future sea ice conditions is important to a growing number of stakeholders, including local populations, natural resource industries, fishing communities, commercial shippers, marine tourism operators, national security organizations, regulatory agencies, and the scientific research community. However, gaps in understanding the interactions between Arctic sea ice, oceans, and the atmosphere, along with an increasing rate of change in the nature and quantity of sea ice, is hampering accurate predictions. Although modeling has steadily improved, projections by every major modeling group failed to predict the record breaking drop in summer sea ice extent in September 2012. Establishing sustained communication between the user, modeling, and observation communities could help reveal gaps in understanding, help balance the needs and expectations of different stakeholders, and ensure that resources are allocated to address the most pressing sea ice data needs. Seasonal-to-Decadal Predictions of Arctic Sea Ice: Challenges and Strategies explores these topics.

Book excerpt: Many factors contribute to variability in Earth's climate on a range of timescales, from seasons to decades. Natural climate variability arises from two different sources: (1) internal variability from interactions among components of the climate system, for example, between the ocean and the atmosphere, and (2) natural external forcings, such as variations in the amount of radiation from the Sun. External forcings on the climate system also arise from some human activities, such as the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and aerosols. The climate that we experience is a combination of all of these factors. Understanding climate variability on the decadal timescale is important to decision-making. Planners and policy makers want information about decadal variability in order to make decisions in a range of sectors, including for infrastructure, water resources, agriculture, and energy. In September 2015, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop to examine variability in Earth's climate on decadal timescales, defined as 10 to 30 years. During the workshop, ocean and climate scientists reviewed the state of the science of decadal climate variability and its relationship to rates of human-caused global warming, and they explored opportunities for improvement in modeling and observations and assessing knowledge gaps. Frontiers in Decadal Climate Variability summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book excerpt: "Uncertainty in the timing of a seasonal ice cover in the Arctic Ocean depends on uncertainty in model physics and natural variability on decadal timescales. We use the Gridded Monthly Sea Ice Extent and Concentration, 1850 Onward together with the Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble to assess whether longer term variability in the CESM is well represented, particularly in the Pacific, Eurasian and Atlantic sector of the Arctic where a longer observational record exists in an attempt to provide better estimate of the uncertainty associated with natural variability for an Atlantic, Eurasian and Pacific-centric sea ice retreat. We find that sea ice decadal (8-16 years) variability in CESM is underestimated in the Eurasian sector of the Arctic, specifically in the East-Siberian Sea, slightly overestimated in the Greenland Sea and in agreement with the observational record in the Pacific sector of the Arctic. Result also show an increased variability at interannual and decadal timescales in the transition period between a perennial and a seasonally ice free Arctic. If the sea ice retreat continues to be Pacific-centric in the future, results from the CESM suggest that uncertainty in the timing of an ice-free Arctic associated with natural variability may be realistic"--

Within the European Commission's Environment and Climate research programs several important projects have been supported in these areas - including the "Dec adal and Interdecadal Climate variability Experiment" (DICE) which forms the basis of this book. Within the EC supported climate research, we see an increasing importance of research into climate variability, as is evidenced in the upcoming Fifth Framework Programme's Key Action on Global Change, Climate and Biodi versity. This is because of the obvious potential socio-economic benefits from sea sonal to decadal scale climate prediction and equally important for the fundamental understanding of the climate system to help improve the quality and reliability of future climate change and mankind's current interference with it. The DICE group has performed important and pioneering work, and we hope this book will receive the wide distribution and recognition it deserves. We wel come the contributions from distinguished researchers from US, Japan and Canada to the EC's DICE group towards completing the scope of the book and as an exam ple of international cooperation which is essential in such a high-level scientific endeavor.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation research, a high-resolution (up to 2 km), unstructured-grid, fully coupled Arctic sea ice-ocean Finite-Volume Community Ocean Model (AO-FVCOM) was employed to study the seasonal and interannual variability of current and sea ice in the Arctic Ocean over the period 1978-2014. The dissertation consisted of two topics. Topic 1 assessed the performance of Arctic sea ice simulation and examined the sensitivity of the model-produced bias to atmospheric forcing without any assimilation of sea ice. The simulated sea ice was in good agreement with available observed sea ice extent, concentration, drift velocity and thickness, not only in seasonal and interannual variability but also in spatial distribution. Compared with six other Arctic Ocean models, the AO-FVCOM-simulated ice thickness showed a higher correlation coefficient and a smaller residual with observations. Model-produced ice drift speed and direction errors varied with wind speed: the speed and direction errors increased and decreased as the wind speed increased, respectively. Efforts were made to examine the influences of parameterizations of air-ice external and ice-water interfacial stresses on the model-produced bias. The ice drift direction was more sensitive to air-ice drag coefficients and turning angles than the ice drift speed. Increasing or decreasing either 10% in water-ice drag coefficient or 10° in water-ice turning angle did not show a significant influence on the ice drift velocity simulation results; although the sea ice drift speed was more sensitive to these two parameters than the sea ice drift direction. Using the COARE 4.0 derived parameterization of air-water drag coefficient for wind stress did not significantly influence the ice drift velocity simulation. Topic 2 was focused on the variability of current circulation and volume transport through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) and their relationship to basin-local atmospheric forcing. The simulated CAA outflow transport was in reasonable agreement with the flux estimated based on measurements across Davis Strait, Nares Strait, Lancaster Sound and Jones Sounds and highly correlated with the along-strait and cross-strait sea surface height (SSH) difference. Compared with the wind forcing, the sea level pressure (SLP) seemed to play a dominant role in establishing the SSH difference in the experiments. Further studies about the impact of wind and SLP on the SSH difference are needed. The change in the simulated CAA outflow transport through Davis Strait showed a negative correlation with the net flux through Fram Strait. This correlation was related to the variation of the spatial distribution and intensity of the slope current over the Beaufort Sea and Greenland shelves.
