Download or read book The Crisis of Belonging and Ethnographies of Peacebuilding in Kaduna State Nigeria written by Benjamin Maiangwa and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the contested notions of territory and belonging in Nigeria, most especially among the Fulani and other ethnic groups in Kaduna. The book argues that these controversies center around Indigenous, nomadic, and autochthonous claims of belonging. The author identifies these differing notions of belonging as a major condition of violent conflicts in Kaduna and across various postcolonial societies. The author’s analysis demonstrates how dynamic ideological impetuses for these conflicts underscore broader issues of citizenship rights, nationhood, and local peacebuilding in Nigeria.

Book Inter ethnic and Religious Conflict Resolution in Nigeria

Download or read book Inter ethnic and Religious Conflict Resolution in Nigeria written by Ernest E. Uwazie and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1982, Nigeria has experienced more than ten large scale ethnic or religious riots in its major cities. These violent clashes have wreaked economic, political, and social havoc; caused an enormous number of deaths and injuries; and posed serious obstacles to Nigeria's sociopolitical development as well as retarded efforts at nation-building. The papers collected in this book serve as a critical part of an overall objective to develop and promote mechanisms for the understanding and resolution of ethnic and religious conflicts in Nigeria. Both academic and community leaders address various aspects of these conflicts, and Uwazie offers several thoughtful options for their successful resolution. Inter-Ethnic and Religious Conflict Resolution in Nigeria will interest students of African history and current affairs, scholars of anthropology and ethnicity studies, and those involved in international relations and peace studies.

Book The Application of Biblical Principles of Conflict Transformation in Ethno religious Situations in Jos and Kaduna Nigeria

Download or read book The Application of Biblical Principles of Conflict Transformation in Ethno religious Situations in Jos and Kaduna Nigeria written by Priscilla Anyango Adoyo and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peacebuilding is at the very heart of the Gospel message and should be prominent in the life of the Church. This research was a qualitative and descriptive study seeking to examine how Christian leaders in Jos and Kaduna use the Bible to inform their responses and reactions to the ethno-religious conflict in order to bring about peace. For the most part, the study utilizes John Paul Lederach's alternative transformational approach to conflict resolution as the basis for the research in understanding the church's role in peacebuilding. This is because John Paul's theory embraces a holistic approach that is more suitable for the context of the study. It is crucial for the church to be on the cutting edge in addressing issues contributing to the various conflicts on the continent in order to maintain her relevance to society and to fulfill her missiological mandate. The data revealed that tribalism, ethnic and religious intolerance, poor leadership, poverty and lack of knowledge and skills on how to engage the peacebuilding process are significant hindrances to the peace process. The Church in Jos and Kaduna needs to realize and understand the need to be more strategic in its planning for training leaders and to put into practice biblically sound and culturally sensitive strategies for peacebuilding. She needs to be more proactive with the future in mind and not reactionary as has been the case on many occasions. The call to living out Christ's mission as a community must also be taken seriously if the church is to be a witness to the world.

Book Identity and Religion in Peace Processes

Download or read book Identity and Religion in Peace Processes written by Karina V. Korostelina and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complex role identity and religion play in global peace processes. Based on multiple case studies, this book unveils the complex role identity and religion play in peace processes across the globe. It demonstrates that the success and sustainability of a peace process depends on the systemic application of the BRIDGE model that is introduced here. This model describes five major strategies (Bonding, Reassuring, Involving, Determining Guides, and Equalizing) and numerous tactics for how peace processes and accords can deal with the central issues as well as important common challenges that run through identity-based ethnonational or religious conflicts. This represents the first comprehensive account of how the transition from enemies to neighbors is achieved and how intergroup relations and engagement are transformed in peace processes, impacting power, access to resources, legitimacy, and representation in national identity. The model also discusses what forms of peacebuilding authentically represent the interests, needs, and values of religious constituencies, and what can be learned from how religious constituencies escalate and de-escalate conflict. The book demonstrates why religion must also be included in peace processes and permanent solutions, owing to religion’s capacity to enhance commitment to bonding and peaceful values, such as justice, compassion, nonviolence, stability, care for children, and care for the environment, for the sick, the wounded, the traumatized, and the bereaved. This book will be of much interest to students of peace studies, intra-state conflict, religion studies, and International Relations.

Book NGOs and Ethno religious Conflict Management

Download or read book NGOs and Ethno religious Conflict Management written by Musa Adamu Wunti and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis analyses the role of NGOs in managing ethno-religious conflicts and examines why their strategies make them effective role players in the Bauchi and Kaduna states of Northern Nigeria. The thesis explores the integrative non-violence interreligious approach to informal intermediary peacemaking by IMC and CMPM for social change. Significant differences are found in their activities in dealing with violent conflicts, using new methods and strategic plans of action referred to as the voluntary intermediary conflict solution that are practically justifiable via facilitated interfaith dialogues, mediations and negotiations. The thesis focuses on the direct intervention of the two NGOs selected in analyzing their role perception and cooperation in the areas they served between 1999 and 2012. Critical to the goal of this research is the discovery and descriptive analysis of how NGOs manage ethno-religious conflicts as perceived by the local population and why strategies employed are effective. Lederach’s Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding theory (1997) suited the research and was used as the theoretical framework for the analysis of active engagement of NGOs in ethno-religious conflict management in Northern Nigeria. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews, focus group interviews and documentary sources of the qualitative research methodology. Thus, face-to-face interviews were used for collecting data from the NGO officials, community/religious leaders as well as focus group discussions on various parameters. A thematic analysis of categories and themes was done to analyze, describe and interpret indicators in the analytical framework. The results of the study reveal that, the NGOs’ strategies have persuaded cooperative ethno-religious conflict management which enjoy acceptability on mutual interest and integrative outcomes. The thesis indicates that NGOs are strong role players in responding to complex emergencies through effective peaceful means. The study found that NGOs ethno-religious conflict management in Northern Nigeria is effective, peaceful as well as preventive. NGOs strategies of action are non-violent, accommodative, integrative and non-partisan. The research also found that IMC and CMPM have made significant efforts in promoting peaceful co-existence and in inculcating the culture of sustainable peace among disputants by using religious scriptures and direct peace talk. This has led to the conclusion that the NGOs’ intermediary role in ethno-religious conflict management relates more to how the locals view the process and which method best brings disputants to peace talks and peacebuilding.

Book Civil Society and Ethnic Conflict Management in Nigeria

Download or read book Civil Society and Ethnic Conflict Management in Nigeria written by Thomas A. Imobighe and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a serious attempt to develop new strategies to manage the ethnic conflicts that continue to undermine Nigeria's efforts at democratic consolidation. Case studies discuss the socio- economic and political dynamics that fuel ethnic conflicts; highlight the limitations to their management; and propose civil society approaches. The book is organised into three parts. The first analyses basic concepts at play, such as ethnicity and ethnic conflict, specifically in the Nigerian context, and against the background of the position of civil society and development in the country. The second part comprises six case studies spread across Nigeria's six geo-political regions. The third section concentrates on the critical issue of civil society empowerment, and proposes ways to enhance its creative participation in the country's development.

Book HISTORICAL ROOTS OF ETHNO RELIGIOUS CRISES AND CONFLICTS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA REVISED EDITION 2019

Download or read book HISTORICAL ROOTS OF ETHNO RELIGIOUS CRISES AND CONFLICTS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA REVISED EDITION 2019 written by Yusufu Turaki and published by Midas Touch Gems. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book updates my earlier books: The British Colonial Legacy, 1993; Theory and Practice of Christian Missions, 1999 and Tainted Legacy: Islam, Colonialism and Slavery in Northern Nigeria, 2010. Instead of revising each book, I decided to write this book as a follow-up to the long-term consequences of the traditional, Islamic, colonial and missionary legacies upon post-colonial and independent Nigeria. The book seeks to show how the politicians and soldiers addressed the politics of ethnicity, regionalism and religion in both colonial and post-colonial Nigeria. The book primary examines and analyzes the historical roots of ethno-religious crises and conflicts in Northern Nigeria as rooted in the legacies of African traditions, Islam, colonialism and Christian missions. This requires that we develop a new comprehensive and appropriate methodology of addressing and evaluating the prevalent and pervasive ethno-religious crises and conflicts in Northern Nigeria. People have sought to address this very issue by using two basic approaches. The first and easier approach is to examine the immediate causes of ethno-religious crises and conflicts. The readily available causes are usually named as religious, ethnic, political, or economics. These surface analyses tend to examine the nature of social interactions and networks and the use of religion, ethnicity, politics, or economics by various people groups that tend towards crises or conflicts. The categories of people who over-use this approach are mainly foreign researchers, journalists and social media practitioners as well as Government functionaries. They tend to look for quick and easy answers and solutions to the immediate crises and conflicts. This approach tends to overlook the deeper question, especially the historical roots of crises and conflicts. This takes us to the neglected second but very valuable and enduring approach, the search for the historical roots of crises. This book develops and formulates a new method of social inquiry that can unravel the mystery of frequent, prevalent and pervasive ethno-religious crises and conflicts in Northern Nigeria. This new social inquiry was developed when I was asked to write a research paper on the Historical Roots of Crises and Conflicts in Kaduna State by the Kaduna State Peace and Reconciliation Committee (KSPRC) in 2012. Since then, I have modified and upgraded this new methodology. The outcome of this new social inquiry gives a better understanding of the nature of interactions and networks of relationships between and among various ethnic, religious and regional groups in Northern Nigeria. The historical time-lime that shaped interactions and engagements of various people groups was identified as a very important social factor that needs to be thoroughly defined and delineated. Our new method of social inquiry wove together certain historical primordial social factors as the roots of ethno-religious crises and conflicts. The first group of social factors identified is the primordial social factors of ethnography (ethnicity), geography (land, territory), religion and culture. A second group called the social reformers were identified through the social inquiry.
