Book The Ecology of Childhood

Download or read book The Ecology of Childhood written by Barbara Bennett Woodhouse and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How globalization is undermining sustainable social environments for children This book uses the ecological model of child development together with ethnographic and comparative studies of two small villages, in Italy and the United States, as its framework for examining the well-being of children in the aftermath of the Great Recession. Global forces, far from being distant and abstract, are revealed as wreaking havoc in children’s environments even in economically advanced countries. Falling birth rates, deteriorating labor conditions, fraying safety nets, rising rates of child poverty, and a surge in racism and populism in Europe and the United States are explored in the petri dish of the village. Globalism’s discontents—unrestrained capitalism and technological change, rising inequality, mass migration, and the juggernaut of climate change—are rapidly destabilizing and degrading the social and physical environments necessary to our collective survival and well-being. This crisis demands a radical restructuring of our macrosystemic value systems. Woodhouse proposes an ecogenerist theory that asks whether our policies and politics foster environments in which children and families can flourish. It proposes, as a benchmark, the family-supportive human-rights principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The book closes by highlighting ways in which individuals can engage at the local and regional levels in creating more just and sustainable worlds that are truly fit for children.

Book Wild Child to Couture Style

Download or read book Wild Child to Couture Style written by Shailah Edmonds and published by Lyons Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Child to Couture Style is based on the true story of former International supermodel, Shailah Edmonds, who was one of the pioneers of African American models that conquered the Couture market, (which is the most rarefied realm of the modeling profession) in Paris, from the late 1970's to the early 1990's. This manuscript chronicles the authors' journey from growing up in Portland, Oregon, to becoming a high fashion model, who has walked the runways of Paris, London, Rome, Japan and other International locales, where she was in demand. Ms. Edmonds writes about a young love that led to her to becoming a teenage mother. Putting her dreams of being an actress on the back burner to mother her child, Shailah's life changed when she met Ruth Turner, while walking in Washington, D.C. Ruth introduced her to New York City. The book chronicles Shailah's experiences traveling around the world in a dream profession. Although Shailah feels as if she is a hidden figure in the mainstream names of fashion, she was among one of the most photographed runway models of that era, because of the energy, style and flair she brought to the runway. Pictorially, the story is told very well with photos of her ancestors who were born into slavery, her progress as she began to be groomed, as well as an abundance of strikingly beautiful couture color photographs. With the popularity of stories of historic black women, this book could easily be a best seller. with elements of courage, drama, comedy, romance and endurance by a single African American female. It is a true story of faith, love and persistence, which would serve as inspiration and example to all young women daring to reach out for a better life. This book would be of interest because not only is it beneficial as a guide to success, but also an inspiration to all, especially aspiring models who are hungry for guidance an from industry professional. This work will appeal to readers who enjoy inspirational memoirs.

Book The Architecture of the Child Mind

Download or read book The Architecture of the Child Mind written by Marc H. Bornstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What exactly does it mean to be intelligent? Does intelligence manifest itself in one way or in different ways in children? Do children fit any preconceived notions of intelligence? Some theories assert a general (g) factor for intelligence that is universal and enters all mental abilities; other theories state that there are many separate domains or faculties (Fs) of intelligence; and still others argue that the g and Fs of intelligence coexist in a hierarchical relation. The Architecture of the Child Mind: g, Fs, and the Hierarchical Model of Intelligence argues for the third option in young children. Through state-of-the-art methodologies in an intensive research program conducted with 4-year-old children, Bornstein and Putnick show that the structure of intelligence in the preschool child is best construed as a hierarchically organized combination of a General Intelligence factor (g) and multiple domain-specific faculties (Fs). The Architecture of the Child Mind offers a review of the history of intelligence theories and testing, and a comprehensive and original research effort on the nature and structure of intelligence in young children before they enter school. Its focus on intelligence will appeal to cognitive, developmental, and social psychologists as well as researchers and scholars in education, particularly those specializing in early childhood education.

Book Model Programs in Child and Family Mental Health

Download or read book Model Programs in Child and Family Mental Health written by Michael C. Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the product of a combined effort to find programs of service delivery that demonstrably treat the varieties of mental health problems of children and their families. The Section on Clinical Child Psychology (APA, Clinical Psychology Section I) and the Division of Child, Youth, and Family Services (APA, Division 37) established a task force whose mission was to identify, provide recognition for, and disseminate information on such programs. Their findings are presented here. The opening chapter and each section overview chapter provide orientations to the program descriptions and examine characteristics of exemplary interventions. The targeted problems include: child abuse and neglect, school adjustment problems, social problem-solving problems, autism and developmental disabilities, conduct disorders and severe emotional problems, children affected by disasters and trauma, children whose parents are divorced, children of teenage parents, family dysfunction and parent-child relationships, oppositional defiant disorder, and attention deficit disorder. Settings for interventions in the model programs include: schools, mental health centers and family guidance clinics, hospitals and pediatric practices, group homes and sheltered workshops, community centers, family homes, summer camps, and coordinated systems of care. The 18 programs described demonstrate the rationale for their interventions, their targeted populations, the type of staff and personnel, various programmatic interventions, aspects of the problems, implementation of interventions, and how the programs have been evaluated. The needs for improved mental health services remain strong. The supporting organizations and the members of the Task Force intend for the product of this project to be helpful in providing models for meeting those needs.

Book How to Be a Better Child Therapist An Integrative Model for Therapeutic Change

Download or read book How to Be a Better Child Therapist An Integrative Model for Therapeutic Change written by Kenneth Barish and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integrative approach for child therapists of all disciplines and at all levels of training and experience. How to Be a Better Child Therapist is an innovative contribution to the theory and practice of child therapy. Drawing on several decades of experience, Kenneth Barish presents a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to therapeutic work with children and families, based on a contemporary understanding of children’s emotions and emotional needs. This book offers a new theoretical integration, an in-depth discussion of the essential processes of child therapy, and a wealth of practical recommendations to help child therapists solve the varied problems presented to us in daily clinical work. Part 1 provides a theoretical foundation. Barish demonstrates how emotional and behavioral problems of childhood are most often caused by vicious cycles of painful emotions and pathogenic family interactions. Successful therapy arrests this malignant development and sets in motion positive cycles of healthy emotional and interpersonal experiences—increased confidence and engagement in life and more affirming interactions between parents and children. Over time, children and adolescents develop a less critical inner voice and more positive expectations for their future—a new sense of what is possible in their lives. Part 2 describes 10 principles that guide our efforts toward this overarching therapeutic goal. Barish offers advice on how we can improve all aspects of clinical work with children: How can we engage more children in treatment? Why is empathy essential to children’s emotional health and effective therapy? How do children learn to regulate their emotions? What is the role of play in contemporary child therapy? How can we combat a child’s discouragement and self-doubt? How can we overcome children’s resistance to talking about bad feelings? Part 3 presents a framework for therapeutic work with parents. Barish describes general principles for strengthening family relationships as well as practical plans for solving many common problems of their daily family life. He offers strategies for helping children who have difficulty with separations, doing homework, getting ready in the morning, or going to sleep at night; children with tantrums and uncooperativeness, rudeness and disrespect, sibling conflicts, and addiction to video games—problems for which parents, often urgently, ask our help. How to Be a Better Child Therapist is both inspiring and practical, essential reading for therapists of all theoretical orientations who work with children and families.

Book The SAGE Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education

Download or read book The SAGE Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education written by Donna Couchenour and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 3481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general public often views early childhood education as either simply “babysitting” or as preparation for later learning. Of course, both viewpoints are simplistic. Deep understanding of child development, best educational practices based on development, emergent curriculum, cultural competence and applications of family systems are necessary for high-quality early education. Highly effective early childhood education is rare in that it requires collaboration and transitions among a variety of systems for children from birth through eight years of age. The SAGE Encyclopedia of Contemporary Early Childhood Education presents in three comprehensive volumes advanced research, accurate practical applications of research, historical foundations and key facts from the field of contemporary early childhood education. Through approximately 425 entries, this work includes all areas of child development – physical, cognitive, language, social, emotional, aesthetic – as well as comprehensive review of best educational practices with young children, effective preparation for early childhood professionals and policy making practices, and addresses such questions as: · How is the field of early childhood education defined? · What are the roots of this field of study? · How is the history of early childhood education similar to yet different from the study of public education? · What are the major influences on understandings of best practices in early childhood education?
