Book A MIXED METHODS STUDY ON NURSING STUDENT STRESS ANXIETY AND RESILIENCE DURING AN UNEXPECTED DEATH SIMULATION

Download or read book A MIXED METHODS STUDY ON NURSING STUDENT STRESS ANXIETY AND RESILIENCE DURING AN UNEXPECTED DEATH SIMULATION written by Kent Dwayne Dickerson and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About one third of the more than 700,000 deaths that occur in hospitals each year are unanticipated. Without appropriate training and experience, a patient's impending death can be overwhelming, and an unexpected death can be even more confusing and traumatic for the novice nurse. Nurse educators have incorporated simulation activities to increase pre-licensure nursing students' competencies in end-of-life and palliative care. However, these types of simulations do not help prepare students to care for patients that die unexpectedly. Due to the perceived negative effects that stress and anxiety could have on pre-licensure students, simulation professionals remain reluctant to expose students to unexpected death simulations. Prior research indicated that students experience large amounts of stress and anxiety in critical care simulations, but explanations are lacking with regards to the variance in students' performance in meeting simulation outcomes; some students perform well, while others do not. Furthermore, the minimal research found related specifically to unexpected death simulations did not explore the relationships between stress, anxiety, learning outcomes and potential moderating factors such as resilience, and was found to lack methodological and statistical rigor. Therefore, it is prudent to explore the effects of stress, anxiety, and resilience, and students' perceptions of an unexpected death simulation. A descriptive, correlational, mixed methods design using a convergent, parallel QUAN+QUAL technique was used as the research method for this study. A pilot study informed and helped finalized methods and procedures. In addition to the research protocol, safety protocols related to COVID-19 were finalized and Institutional Review Board permission was obtained. A convenience sample of students was recruited from a small eastern North Carolina community college where the fourth semester of an Associated Degree Nursing program includes a stroke simulation which leads to unexpected death. Study data were collected by research assistants and the principal investigator, who then prepared the data for analysis. Analytical methods included descriptive statistics, statistical procedures to explore relationships among variables and to compare groups, and one-on-one interviews; these were then placed in a meta-matrix for a combined analysis of QUANT+QUAL data. Study results from the pilot study are discussed in chapter four, while the results of the dissertation study are discussed in chapter five.

Book The Impact of a Death and Dying Simulation on Nursing Students Levels of Empathy Attitude Towards Caregiving and Fear of Death

Download or read book The Impact of a Death and Dying Simulation on Nursing Students Levels of Empathy Attitude Towards Caregiving and Fear of Death written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nursing students often lack proper training needed to handle the emotional and mental aspects of caring for end-of-life patients. They are interested in saving and helping people but, may be ill prepared for caring for patients in end-of-life cases. Many nursing students are not exposed to potentially stressful situations they may encounter in their career as it relates to a dying patient. Previous research suggests that the use of simulations with nursing students has proven to be effective in reinforcing topics taught in the classroom. This study will offer insight into several factors that could affect how nursing students perform in patient death circumstances. The current study aims to assess the effectiveness of death and dying simulations experience on the development of empathy, identification of fear of death and whether these factors attribute to attitudes towards caregiving. Students from a private university will engage in death and dying simulations as part of their course requirements. Using a pre-test- post-test design with a follow-up post-test, we hypothesize: the death and dying training simulation will increase the nursing student's level of empathy, the death and dying training simulation will increase the nursing student's level of their attitude towards caregiving, empathy and fear of death will significantly predict the nursing student's attitude towards caregiving"--Page 6.

Book Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout

Download or read book Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patient-centered, high-quality health care relies on the well-being, health, and safety of health care clinicians. However, alarmingly high rates of clinician burnout in the United States are detrimental to the quality of care being provided, harmful to individuals in the workforce, and costly. It is important to take a systemic approach to address burnout that focuses on the structure, organization, and culture of health care. Taking Action Against Clinician Burnout: A Systems Approach to Professional Well-Being builds upon two groundbreaking reports from the past twenty years, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health System for the 21st Century, which both called attention to the issues around patient safety and quality of care. This report explores the extent, consequences, and contributing factors of clinician burnout and provides a framework for a systems approach to clinician burnout and professional well-being, a research agenda to advance clinician well-being, and recommendations for the field.

Book A Cross Sectional Examination of Sudden Death Bereavement in University Students

Download or read book A Cross Sectional Examination of Sudden Death Bereavement in University Students written by Joanna Bhaskaran and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: This thesis addresses the topic of sudden death bereavement in university students. Sudden death bereavement is due to the sudden, unexpected loss of a loved one. It often occurs in a traumatic manner, which can contribute to adverse psychological and physical outcomes, including increased mortality risk. University students are a vulnerable population for poor mental health outcomes, and the sudden loss of a loved one is the most common traumatic event reported in this population. Therefore, we aim to add to the knowledge about the prevalence of this phenomenon in university students, outcomes following sudden bereavement, and factors associated with these outcomes. Method: Using a survey method that was administered online, introductory psychology students provided sociodemographic information and bereavement related information. They also completed questionnaires on mental health status, including depression, generalized anxiety, complicated grief, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and alcohol use. They finally completed questionnaires on help-seeking behaviour and coping. Results: Results from our study indicated that the sudden loss of a loved one is highly prevalent among university students. Sudden death bereaved university students were more likely to experience negative outcomes, such as complicated grief, even when the time since death, relationship to the deceased, and closeness of the relationship were taken into account. Rumination and avoidance were associated with poorer mental health outcomes with regards to depression, generalized anxiety, suicidal ideation, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Sudden death bereaved students who had significant mental health concerns were more likely to seek help.

Book excerpt: Death affects us all. It is an inevitable certainty of living, universally faced by all human beings. Currently, and projected into the future, the vast majority of people in developed countries will die in an acute-care hospital. Nurses, of all the health professionals encounter dying patients and death more frequently than any other group. Caring for an adult dying patient is complex and poses many challenges when undertaken in an acute-care hospital. Understanding those challenges more completely, will enable students and new graduate nurses to be more adequately prepared by their undergraduate programs. This first Australian study sought to understand what the experience of caring for an adult dying patient and their family means to Australian students and new graduate nurses. A two-phase mixed method study design incorporating a longitudinal element was selected to conduct the research. It is named specifically as sequential explanatory because a quantitative study was conducted initially, followed by a qualitative study.
