Book excerpt: Because past research has shown faculty as the driving force affecting student academic library use, librarians have tried for decades to engage classroom faculty in library activities. Nevertheless, a low rate of library use by faculty on behalf of their students persists.This study investigated the organizational culture dimensions affecting library faculty demand at a community college.The study employed a sequential quantitative- qualitative research design.A random sample of full- time faculty at a large urban community college responded to a 46-item survey.The survey data showed strong espoused support (84%) for the use of library- based materials but a much lower incidence of putting this construct into practice (46%).

Book excerpt: This dissertation examined the interrelationship of organizational culture; macro (structural) and micro (psychological) empowerment; and job satisfaction. Specifically, this dissertation: (1) built upon the insights and framework of prior research literature that suggest the relationship of macro (structural) and micro (psychological) empowerment and its effect on job satisfaction (2) expanded existing empowerment models by introducing organizational culture as an influential organizational phenomenon (3) assessed the level of degree how organizational subculture groups perceive organizational culture, macro (structural) and micro (psychological) empowerment; and job satisfaction contextual attributes. The dissertation utilized mixed method research combining both a quantitative and qualitative study with a triangulation of methods. The quantitative study employed a sample of 258 federal government employees and used hierarchical linear modeling techniques, multiple regression, hierarchical regression analysis, and independent T-test of sample means to test for main and mediator effects. The qualitative study employed a sample of 69 federal government employees and used open-ended content analysis to analyze data. Results from the quantitative study revealed that there are strong and positive relationships of organizational culture; macro empowerment, micro empowerment; and job satisfaction. Further, the quantitative study revealed that occupational subculture influences the level of perception of organizational culture; macro and micro empowerment; and job satisfaction. Results from the qualitative study provided rich and robust descriptive results complementing the quantitative study.

Book excerpt: Faculty Development: Creating a Collaborative Culture in Community Colleges addresses how faculty developers work with changes and challenges in teaching within the community college context. Using a multi-case study design based on semi-structured interviews, document analysis, focus groups and surveys, the book examines faculty development within six community college contexts. Three of these case studies, conducted before the Covid-19 pandemic, attended to how the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) were pillars for faculty development. The other three case studies feature the pivot that faculty developers and faculty made at their institutions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In these cases, it is seen how faculty development shifts from long-term, sustained initiatives such as SOTL and FLCs to just-in-time (JiT) faculty development, as well as virtual and collaborative faculty development. Book excerpt: Higher education institutions are increasingly pressured to identify performance measures related to organizational effectiveness. Research has shown that theorists and practitioners have varying views on which criteria most appropriately measure effectiveness in higher education institutions, which has led to the development of a robust model that amalgamates concepts from the major theoretical models into a single framework. This model, known as the Competing Values Framework, accounts for the presence of the paradoxical attributes associated with the complex nature of higher education institutions. This study uses the Competing Values Framework to measure the relationships between measures of effectiveness and cultural and leadership complexity based on the perceptions of faculty and administrators in the North Carolina Community College System. Community colleges represent the largest sector in American higher education, and the North Carolina Community College System is one of the largest and most diverse systems of community colleges in the nation; therefore, it was chosen as a representative sample for this study. The results of the linear regression analyses revealed that significant relationships exist between dimensions of effectiveness and cultural and leadership complexity, with minimal variance between faculty and administrator perceptions. Specifically, effectiveness dimensions related to student satisfaction and development as well as dimensions related to institutional practices and functioning were perceived to be more effective with increasing cultural and leadership complexity. In contrast, effectiveness dimensions related to individual employee satisfaction and development were perceived to be more effective with decreasing cultural and leadership complexity. These results can inform higher education practitioners and theorists on programs and practices that address these findings.

Book excerpt: Years of hiring practices have resulted in adjunct professors comprising the majority of college faculty (Gappa, Austin, & Trice, 2007; Schuster & Finkelstein, 2006). Today, adjunct faculty provide almost half of all instruction at the California community colleges (Student Success Initiative, 2018). It is essential to increase adjunct faculty participation in student success activities, such as Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) assessment. A large number of courses may not be taught as effectively if adjunct faculty do not assess SLOs (Danley-Scott & Topsett-Makin, 2013). This study sought to identify how adjunct faculty perceive their department cultures across the state. It also strived to understand what, if any, influence departmental cultures have on adjunct faculty contributing to SLO assessment. This mixed methods sequential explanatory study yielded findings emerged that indicate adjunct faculty at iii both sites primarily experience inclusive and learning cultures. Specific areas for improvement include communication, collaboration, and input in the design of curriculum and learning goals. Emergent findings included the role of the department chair as the progenitor and maintainer of a department's culture. Adjunct faculty were found to be driven primarily by a sense of service to students and refining the curriculum to serve transfer and career goals. Lack of communication and collaboration were found to have adverse effects on these intrinsic motivations. Departments and institutions seeking to transform cultures of compliance around student learning outcomes assessment into cultures of inquiry may do well to begin with communication, collaboration, and other low cost change strategies in order to cultivate inclusive and learning cultures that increase adjunct faculty participation in SLO assessment.
