Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mannaseh: A Story of Mixed Marriages Joseph, having been sold into Egypt as a slave by his older brothers, was finally bought by Pontiphar who held the responsible position of chef cook to Pharoah, king of Egypt, and Joseph soon became the favorite with his master by his ready wit, beauty, honesty and faithfulness as a servant. He was educated in the Egyptian schools and as a further mark of favoritism he was set free, but retained as a servant to his former master. He was allowed better food than the slaves and given privileges, freedom and power not enjoyed by the slaves. Joseph was soon promoted to chief steward of the household over servants who had been in the service of the master much longer than himself, which position he filled with much prudence and satisfaction. Joseph's administration of his master's affairs, his deportment and his beauty had long since gained the admiration of his master"s wife and she fell desperately in love with him, but Joseph refused the advancement made to him by her and refused to reciprocate her love which so enraged her, she accused him falsely of trying to assault her. This she did in order to hide her own sin and to get revenge on Joseph for not yielding to her desires and demands. As a result Joseph was put in the malfactor's prison. Contrary to the usual custom of persons charged with a crime, Joseph made no attempt to defend himself, neither did he insinuate that he was being persecuted, but silently he submitted to the sentence given him and entered the prison and performed the laborious task assigned him thoroughly without complaint. Book Intermarriage Classic Reprint

Download or read book Intermarriage Classic Reprint written by D. De Sola Pool and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Intermarriage Why in these days should Judaism still continue to oppose intermarriage? It is argued that the strength of the power of love is such that no consideration of expediency can withstand it. If this were true, and men married when they fell in love without allowing their heads in some measure to control their hearts, marriage would by now have become a thoroughly discredited human institution. The experience of the human race has decreed that between falling in love and getting married, there shall be an appreciable inter val for reflection. This experience is summed up in the proverbial saying, Marry in haste, repent at leisure. Every marriage is virtually an irrevocable act, and a mismarriage can be rectified only by the costly, tedious and painful processes of the divorce court. The Jewish man who has fallen in love with some fair non-jewish maiden would therefore do well not to overlook some of the practical considerations involved in his taking the final step of marriage with its lifelong obligations. Book Love s Revolution

Download or read book Love s Revolution written by Maria P. P. Root and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Baby Boom generation was in college, the last miscegenation laws were declared unconstitutional, but interracial romances retained an aura of taboo. Since 1960 the number of mixed race marriages has doubled every decade. Today, the trend toward intermarriage continues, and the growing presence of interracial couples in the media, on college campuses, in the shopping malls and other public places draws little notice.Love's Revolutiontraces the social changes that account for the growth of intermarriage as well as the lingering prejudices and false beliefs that oppress racially mixed families. For this book author Maria P.P. Root, a clinical psychologist, interviewed some 200 people from a wide spectrum of racial and ethnic backgrounds. Speaking out about their views and experiences, these partners, family members, and children of mixed race marriages confirm that the barriers are gradually eroding; but they also testify to the heartache caused by family opposition and disapproving strangers. Root traces race prejudice to the various institutions that were structured to maintain white privilege, but the heart of the book is her analysis of what happens when people of different races decide to marry. Developing an analogy between families and types of businesses, she shows how both positive and negative reactions to such marriages are largely a matter of shared concepts of family rather than individual feelings about race. She probes into the identity issues that multiracial children confront and draws on her clinical experience to offer child-rearing recommendations for multiracial families. Root's "Bill of Rights for Racially Mixed People" is a document that at once empowers multiracial people and educates those who ominously ask, "What about the children?"Love's Revolutionpaints an optimistic but not idealized picture of contemporary relationships. The "Ten Truths about Interracial Marriage" that close the book acknowledge that mixed race couples experience the same stresses as everyone else in addition to those arising from other people's prejudice or curiosity. Their divorce rates are only slightly higher than those of single race couples, which suggests that their success or failure at marriage is not necessarily a racial issue. And that is a revolutionary idea! Author note:Maria P. P. Root, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and past President of the Washington State Psychological Association.

It encompasses common law marriages and Maori customary marriages, alongside formal arrangements recognized by church and state, and shows how public policy and private life were woven together. It also explores the gamut of official reactions—from condemnation of interracial immorality or racial treason to celebration of New Zealand's unique intermarriage patterns as a sign of its progressive attitude toward race relations. This social history focuses on the lives and experiences of real Maori and Pakeha people and reveals New Zealand's changing attitudes to race, marriage, and intimacy.

Book The White Other in American Intermarriage Stories 1945 2008

Download or read book The White Other in American Intermarriage Stories 1945 2008 written by L. Cardon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fictional depictions of intermarriage can illuminate perceptions of both 'ethnicity' and 'whiteness' at any given historical moment. Popular examples such as Lucy and Ricky in I Love Lucy (1951-1957), Joanna and John in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), Toula and Ian in My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002) helped raise questions about national identity: does 'American' mean 'white' or a blending of ethnicities? Building on previous studies by scholars of intermarriage and identity, this study is an ambitious endeavor to discern the ways in which literature and films from the 1960s through 2000s rework nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century intermarriage tropes. Unlike earlier stories, these narratives position the white partner as the 'other' and serve as useful frameworks for assessing ethnic and American identity. Lauren S. Cardon sheds new light on ethno-racial solidarity and the assimilation of different ethnicities into American dominant culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marriage Therefore to treat such a subject with authority requires a pro found and sympathetic knowledge Of the social conditions and inner lives Of men in other times, classes and countries, as well as our own to speak of it with sincerity and acceptance demands a habit of mind finely tempered of frankness and delicacy - and a power of exact and noble expression which is the peculiar heritage of the poet. It follows then that I must renounce the hope of expressing my meaning in a manner which will cause it to be gladly received by all who hear me. I must be content with sincerity; and for that I ask a hearing, patient, and as sincere as I shall try to make my utterance.
