Book A Simple Introduction to the Mixed Finite Element Method

Download or read book A Simple Introduction to the Mixed Finite Element Method written by Gabriel N. Gatica and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to provide a simple and accessible introduction to the mixed finite element method as a fundamental tool to numerically solve a wide class of boundary value problems arising in physics and engineering sciences. The book is based on material that was taught in corresponding undergraduate and graduate courses at the Universidad de Concepcion, Concepcion, Chile, during the last 7 years. As compared with several other classical books in the subject, the main features of the present one have to do, on one hand, with an attempt of presenting and explaining most of the details in the proofs and in the different applications. In particular several results and aspects of the corresponding analysis that are usually available only in papers or proceedings are included here.

Book Time Domain Coupling of the Boundary and Finite Element Methods for Elastodynamics

Download or read book Time Domain Coupling of the Boundary and Finite Element Methods for Elastodynamics written by J. Cox and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the time domain coupling of the boundary and finite element methods for elastodynamics. The study is motivated by the need for a 'silent boundary' in nonlinear problems with infinite domains. Of the boundary element methods (BEMs) considered, formulations based on the Stokes solution appear to be the best suited. The theoretical and numerical bases for the indirect and direct BEMs using the Stokes solution are presented. The integral equation statements of the boundary-initial value problem included a convolution of the time variable and thus appear to be computationally intense. A coupling algorithm which treats the BEM region as a nonlinear boundary condition to the finite element region is presented. The potential of the coupled approach might be realized by exploiting special properties of Stoke's solution and designing the algorithm to use the advances in computer hardware (e.g. parallel processing). (SDW).

Book Development of Versatile Mixed Finite Element Methods for the Non Isothermal Incompressible and Compressible Navier Stokes Equations

Download or read book Development of Versatile Mixed Finite Element Methods for the Non Isothermal Incompressible and Compressible Navier Stokes Equations written by Edward Miller and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever increasing demand for accurate numerical methods has led to the development of more and more sophisticated methods for simulating fluid flow. These methods are often designed to handle a specific flow regime or be valid under specific circumstances. What is needed in the field is a method that is accurate and robust over a wide range of conditions. Here, we propose a finite element method designed to work over a broad range of flow regimes and remain consistent and accurate in each regime. This is accomplished utilizing a mixed finite element method whose properties are rigorously analyzed to demonstrate the method's effectiveness at handling these different flow regimes. We first use standard mathematical techniques to prove that the method is stable and obtains optimal error estimates for the non-isothermal incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We then demonstrate on a series of test cases that the method accurately captures the physics of the non-isothermal incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Next, we extend our method to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations where again the order of accuracy is demonstrated, this time using a series of numerical experiments. Finally, we present a series of compressible flow test cases to prove that the method can capture the physics of this regime.

Download or read book Finite Elements written by Dietrich Braess and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-12 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This definitive introduction to finite element methods was thoroughly updated for this 2007 third edition, which features important material for both research and application of the finite element method. The discussion of saddle-point problems is a highlight of the book and has been elaborated to include many more nonstandard applications. The chapter on applications in elasticity now contains a complete discussion of locking phenomena. The numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations is an important application of finite elements and the author discusses this subject comprehensively. These equations are treated as variational problems for which the Sobolev spaces are the right framework. Graduate students who do not necessarily have any particular background in differential equations, but require an introduction to finite element methods will find this text invaluable. Specifically, the chapter on finite elements in solid mechanics provides a bridge between mathematics and engineering.

Book Finite Element Method

Download or read book Finite Element Method written by Sinan Muftu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-07-19 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite Element Method: Physics and Solution Methods enables the reader to develop a sound understanding of physical systems so that they can get the most out of their use of the finite element method. Nearly all physical systems in the FEM realm are represented by partial differential equations. This book focuses on 1D and 2D elasticity, and 1D and 2D heat transfer problems, with a detailed derivation of the governing equations. The connections between the classical variational techniques and the finite element method are carefully explained. After a chapter addressing the classical variational methods, the finite element method is developed as a natural outcome of these methods where the governing PDE is defined over a sub-segment (element) of the solution domain. As well as being an invaluable guide to thorough and effective use of the finite element method, this book also functions as an authoritative reference on theory of elasticity, heat transfer and mechanics of beams and plates.

Book Mixed Finite Element Methods with Applications to Flow and Other Problems

Download or read book Mixed Finite Element Methods with Applications to Flow and Other Problems written by Max D. Gunzburger and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three problems were considered. These were finite element approximations due to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations, for potential flows, and for acoustic eigenvalue problems. In all cases both theoretical error estimates and computer codes implementing the best algorithm were developed. We also report on other activities sponsored by the grant, i.e. student research and conference talks.
