Book A Theological Assessment of Reconciliation for Missiology in the Korean Context

Download or read book A Theological Assessment of Reconciliation for Missiology in the Korean Context written by Hyo Seok Lim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any Christian who lives in such a broken world may ask God what their role would be as the person who is reconciled with God, and about the implications of the vertical dimension of reconciliation. Many would agree that the vertical and horizontal dimensions of reconciliation should not be separated. It is, however, still necessary to examine further. For instance, what does the inseparableness of the two dimensions actually mean—in theory and practice? How does the vertical dimension of reconciliation become the source and foundation of the horizontal dimension? How should the church maintain its theology of reconciliation, which includes both dimensions? All these questions point to an underlying question: what is the relationship between the vertical and horizontal dimensions of reconciliation? This book explores this question, interacting with the four thinkers and practitioners of reconciliation, Karl Barth, Miroslav Volf, Son Yang-Won, and Desmond Tutu, and assessing the theology of a leading theologian in the discourse of mission as reconciliation, Robert Schreiter. Based on the discussions, it presents a proposal for a more wholesome and robust understanding of reconciliation for the discourse in mission studies, which can be applied to any broken context, including the Korean peninsula.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appropriate Christianity consists of 28 chapters by 18 authors approaching contextualization in three dimensions: truth, allegiance and spiritual power. Over the years, there have been quite a number of helpful discussions of the contextualization of theological truth. Though we have been helped greatly by them, it is high time we began to deal also with allegiance and spiritual power, two additional dimensions that Jesus considered of great importance. Any adequate and appropriate treatment of the contextualization of biblical Christianity needs to deal with all three of these "crucial dimensions." For allegiance to Christ is the basis for all we do that makes us Christian, and Jesus was very much into spiritual power. If we are to be truly biblical, we must deal also with these areas. This book is not a festschrift even though it is dedicated to Dr. Dean S. Gilliland, who joined the faculty of Fuller's School of Intercultural Studies in 1977 and has since been developing an emphasis on teaching and research concerning contextualized theology. This is a new textbook aimed at expanding our understanding of contextualization and better enabling us to effectively and appropriately communicate biblical Christianity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lee advocates a “theology of hope,” essentially different from the Moltmann version on which the idea is developed. Lee shows how Cho’s message, particularly in its promise of a “saved” healthy, happy and prosperous life (the “Threefold Blessing”), was the antidote to the events that had ravaged the Korean peninsula in the 1950s. At the same time, Asian Pentecostal scholars might also need a greater appreciation for both the diversity and richness of their cultural and religious past. . . . [They] have found both culturally and biblically acceptable alternatives to, and adaptations from, the practices of their ancient religions and are seeking to provide answers to the needs of their own context. —Allan H. Anderson, University of Birmingham, England (From the Foreword)

This book was released on 2006 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study focuses on identifying similarities and influences of Korean indigenous religions (shamanism, Korean Buddhism, and Confucianism) on Pastor David Yonggi Cho's teachings and on the practices of Yoido Full Gospel Church (YFGG). This research examines basic aspects of shamanism, Buddhism, and Confucianism in order to achieve a fuller understanding of Cho's teaching and Korean Christianity. The studies of each indigenous religion provide the patterns, beliefs, and pracice of each religion. The findings reveal the similarities and differences between Korean indigenous religions and YFGC's teachings and practices. The research also represents possibilities to develop theologically valid contextualized positions within the Korean context that are also aligned with Scripture. The research suggests several practices and elements of contextual positions from those Korean indigenous regions. Implementing the sound indigenous principles could strengthen YFGC's evangelical mission in Korea and Korean Christianity. This thesis concludes suggesting further research on the historical background of Korean indigenous religions and YFGC's teaching and Korean Christianity. In-depth study of the religious history and character of Korean religions, Christianity, history, and society will also help to determine effective contextualization in Korean society.

Book Doing Diaspora Missiology Toward Diaspora Mission Church

Download or read book Doing Diaspora Missiology Toward Diaspora Mission Church written by Luther Jeom Ok Kim and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In U.S. Population Projections: 2005-2050, Pew Research Center reported that "The nation's population will rise to 438 million in 2050, from 296 million in 2005, and fully 82% of the growth during this period will be due to immigrants arriving from 2005 to 2050 and their descendants." This shows that it is essential to study and understand how our mission, especially in the context of the USA, called the nation of immigrants, will respond to this huge mobility of immigrant diaspora. So far, there has been emphasis on doing diaspora missiology; however, there is no practical implications and application in local church setting. Now mission is next door, which implies that the ministry of the local church should be emphasized for 21st contemporary mission. This book provides detailed frameworks and methods of diaspora missiology within local churches, called 'diaspora mission church.' According to the Bible, all human beings are theologically and spiritually diaspora, irrespective of ethnicity, because they were banished from the Garden of Eden, and scattered around the world in God's judgment. Now, they walk toward the encounter with Jesus Christ, preach the gospel as the seed of Kingdom, and finally move toward heaven.
