Book excerpt: Preliminary mineralogical investigations carried out on pyrite samples extracted from the Main and Kimberley Reef at Vogelstruisbult gold mine indicate differences in the chemical composition of the pyrite as well as in the cell edge of the pyrites. The susceptibility to oxidation of the pyrite in the Main Reef is ascribed to a cobalt-to-nickel ratio higher than that shown by pyrite from the Kimberley Reef. The cobalt content of the Main Reef pyrite is also higher. The differences in the cell edge of the pyrite from the two horizons are attributed to different degrees of replacement of iron by nickel and cobalt in the pyrite lattice. Pyrite from the Main Reef, which shows the largest cell edge, also contains the most cobalt.

Book excerpt: Tests were carried out at the Luanshya Concentrator of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited, to produce a pyrite concentrate as a byproduct of the existing copper flotation circuit. An applied mineralogical investigation was undertaken as an aid to the optimization of the flotation circuit. A mineralogical analysis of the various products showed that the recoveries both of copper sulphide to the copper rougher concentrate and of pyrite to the pyrite rougher concentrate exceeded 80 per cent. Coarse copper sulphides tended to float in the copper scavenger concentrate and the pyrite rougher concentrate, indicating that regrinding of the copper scavenger concentrate would increase the recovery of copper to the copper rougher concentrate. A low recovery of pyrite to the copper rougher concentrate indicated an effective pyrite depression. The liberation and grain-size characteristics of the copper sulphides and pyrite in their respective rougher concentrates indicated that is should be possible to clean the rougher concentrates. The losses of copper sulphide to the final tailing were due mainly to locked grains in low-grade middlings, and the losses of pyrite were due to both free and locked grains.
