Book A Midsummer s Cruise Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Midsummer s Cruise Classic Reprint written by Nicholas a Draim and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Midsummer's Cruise The days have long since passed by when Blackboards and Captain Kidds haunted the high seas, bringing terror into the hearts of peaceful merchants and travelers. The time is no more when seafaring men told wierd tales of phantom ships, with red sails and ghostly crews, looming up out of the darkness. But the old ocean still holds a part of its romance, and steel ships have not yet driven from its bosom the adventurer and the lighter. It is in an endeavor to preserve a little of the true romance of the sea that this book, based on actual experience during the practice cruise to Europe, is written. The reader who opens these pages expecting to find a carefully worked-out plot with a hero and a villain and thrilling struggles between the two, will be disappointed. Daily life rarely contains a dominating scheme, but is made up of a succession of events upon which we react with sorrow, pleasure, anger, or whatever mood our natures dictate. He who likes to view a cross section of real life and is interested in what his neighbor does and says, will not find this book uninteresting. The real adventurer and the real tighter arc often concealed behind a common exterior, as the reader will see in the course of this story. The places are exactly as described - the men who were shipmates with the author will recognize them. Those on the outside may settle themselves in their easy chairs, become young again in spirit, and sail away with the fleet to Europe. The author wishes to acknowledge the use of valuable material from the various ship's papers, such as the "Klassy K," "The South C Breeze," "The Wolverine." and "The North Star," and particularly the kindness of the photographic staff of the Lucky Bag of 1922 in permitting the use of their pictures for the illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Midsummer Wooing I really didn't mean to break that vase, it just happened so: yet I have always been very fortunate in getting rid of things I dislike. I remember once having a bonnet I hated. It cost me so much that I felt obliged to wear it; but one night I forgot and left it on a bench in the garden. A fearful storm arose, and next morning, when I went to look for my bonnet, why, you wouldn't have known it was a bonnet. I bore that loss with great resignation. Download or read book The Cruise of the Midge Classic Reprint written by Michael Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Midge Bow an Irishman, the son of an Irishwoman; educated in Scotland, the country of my father, an ancient mariner, who, as master and supercargo, had sailed his own ship for many years in the Virginia trade; removed to England at the age of seventeen, in consequence of his death; I had, by the time I arrived at majority, passed four years of my mercantile apprenticeship in my paternal uncle's counting - house, an extensive merchant in that modern Tyre, the enterprising town of Liverpool during which period, young as I was, I had already made four voyages in different vessels of his to foreign parts - to the West Indies, the Brazils, the Costa Firme, and the United States of America. Being naturally a rambling, harumscarum sort of a young chap, this sort of life jumped better with my disposition than being perched on the t0p of a tall mahogany tripod, poring over invoices, daybooks, journals, and ledgers, with the shining ebony-coloured desk jammed into the pit'ol' my stomach below, and its arbour of bright brass rods constantly perverting the integrity of my curls above; so at the period when the scene opens, I had with much ado prevailed on my uncle to let me proceed once more on a cruise, instead of a senior clerk, in charge of two of his ships, bound to the African coast, to trade for ivory and gold dust, and to fill up with palm oil and hardwood timbers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Frolic: A Sea Story The "Cruise of the 'Frolic'" has already met with so many marks of favor, that it is hoped it will be welcomed not the less warmly in its new and more attractive form. The yachting world especially received the narrative of my adventures in good part; two or three, however, among whom was the O'Wiggins, insisted that I had caricatured them, and talked of demanding satisfaction at the point of the sword, or the muzzle of a pistol. I assured them then, as I do now, that on the word of an officer and a gentleman, I had not the slightest intention of wounding the feelings of any human being; and I entreated their pardon, if in shooting at a venture I had hit an object at which I had not taken aim. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Summer Cruise: On the Coast of New England The fishing voyage of which this book is a record was made in 1858, during my summer vacation from the arduous duties of a Washing ton Correspondent of the'new York Tribune, and the narrative originally appeared in the form of letters to that journal. In that shape it met with considerable favor, especially from sportsmen and naturalists; and its publication in a permanent form, at this late day, is due, in part, to the assurances I have received from high scientific authority that its sketches of the fishes of our Northern seas, of their habits and resorts, and of the methods of taking them, are not without value as contributions to Natural History. I can only say upon this point, that I have spared no pains to make my statements accurate, not only by careful personal observa tions, but by freely consulting and using the writings of our best American ichthyologists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Midge, Vol. 1 of 2 I had no small difficulty in carrying this point, as the extreme insalubrity of the climate, the chance of being plundered by the semi-piratical foreign slavers, to say nothing of the danger of a treacherous attack on the part of the natives themselves, weighed heavily against my going in my worthy uncle's mind; but I had set my heart on it, and where there's a will, there's a way. I will not conceal, however, that after all, when it came to the point, I do not believe he would have allowed me to depart, had it not been for a prank of mine, which put him into a towering passion with me about this time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cruise of the Shining Light There was more to be wondered at: beginning at my uncle's left ear, which was itself sadly puckered and patched, a wide, rough scar, of changing color, as his temper went, cut a great swath in his wiry hair, curving clear over the crown of his head. A second scar, of lesser dimension and ghastly look, lay upon his fore head, over the right eyebrow, to which though by nature drooping to a glower, it gave a 'sharp upward twist, SO that in a way to surprise the stranger he was in good humor or bad, cynical or sullen, according to the point of approach. Book A Summer s Cruise in the Yacht Swordfish Auxiliary Yawl Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Summer s Cruise in the Yacht Swordfish Auxiliary Yawl Classic Reprint written by G. L. Parmelee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Summer's Cruise in the Yacht "Swordfish," Auxiliary Yawl In writing up this little yarn, the skipper hopes it may prove as interesting to those who read it, as it has to him in recalling the many events and incidents. The happenings of many years are chronicled in it; some of the memories are sad, some of them joyful, some funny, and some strenuous; all of them are from the logs of many cruises, and the story seems to have taken on much of the abruptness of a log, but had it been otherwise, it would have spun out to a great length, and I fear, have become monotonous. As it is I feel constrained to apologize for the many defects in it and to ask the reader's kind consideration of the fact that compiling the various small particles making up the whole story was no small task and took much more time than was anticipated. In closing, let me dedicate this little book to the many good chums of both sexes, who have sailed with me, and who have put much of pleasure into my life. May they reap in full measure the good they have sown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
