Book Design Investigation for a Microstrip Phased Array Antenna for the ORION Satellite

Download or read book Design Investigation for a Microstrip Phased Array Antenna for the ORION Satellite written by Mark B. Smith and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students at the Naval Postgraduate School are designing a general purpose mini-satellite that can be launched from a 'Get-Away-Special' cannister located in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle and will be compatible with expendable launch vehicles as well. This thesis defines preliminary antenna systems and the design parameters for the telemetry system of the ORION mini-satellite. These antenna design parameters may be used for investigations of various proposed antenna systems and the design parameters also allow for trade-off studies with the mission capabilities and subsystems of the satellite. An investigation is made into the feasibility of using conformal microstrip patch array antennas for the telemetry, tracking and command (TT & C) systems. It is necessary to have two separate microstrip patch array antennas for the telemetry system: one uplink and one downlink antenna. The microstrip patch array antenna can operate as either an omnidirectional antenna or a directional antenna by changing the phase of the individual patch feeds. This feature gives the microstrip patch array antenna more flexibility for meeting the needs of potential users. Theses. (RH).

Book SHF SATCOM Microstrip Phased Array Antenna

Download or read book SHF SATCOM Microstrip Phased Array Antenna written by Brian C. Considine and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern airborne and ground satellite communication systems often require high gain antennas which are low profile and are capable of conforming to a variety of surfaces. A phased array utilizing distributed solid state components is capable of satisfying the wide angular scan coverage and low noise requirements. An array for receive only operation is described which utilizes monolithic microwave technology in a novel solution to the low profile constraint. The array operates at SHF frequencies, has 128 radiating elements and associated monolithic modules, and is approximately 8 by 13 inches. Radiating elements are microstrip patches fed by a unique capacitively coupled feed network resulting in an 8% bandwidth.

Book The Design and Analysis of a Phased Array Microstrip Antenna for a Low Earth Orbit Communication Satellite

Download or read book The Design and Analysis of a Phased Array Microstrip Antenna for a Low Earth Orbit Communication Satellite written by William Lee Barfield and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Naval Postgraduate School spacecraft design class proposed a multiple beam, phased array, microstrip antenna as part of the preliminary design of a low earth orbit communication satellite. The antenna must provide coverage over the satellite's entire field of view while both uplink and down- link operate simultaneously on the same 1-band frequency. This thesis assesses the feasibility of the antenna proposed in that preliminary design. Design tradeoffs for a microstrip array constrained by both available surface area and a limited mass budget are examined. Two different substrate materials are considered in terms of weight and performance. Microstrip patch theory is applied to array element design and layout and antenna array theory is applied to determine phase and amplitude coefficients. The focus of the design is on obtaining the desired beam shape and orientation, given antenna size constraints. A corporate feed method is discussed and a general design presented. Antenna performance is predicted through the use of a computer model based on Modal Expansion theory and results are plotted in a series of graphs which demonstrate the limitations of the proposed design.

Book Design of Stripline fed Dual Polarization Aperture coupled Stacked Microstrip Patch Phased Array Antenna for Wideband Application

Download or read book Design of Stripline fed Dual Polarization Aperture coupled Stacked Microstrip Patch Phased Array Antenna for Wideband Application written by David G. Kim and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent days, antennas play an important role in wireless communication system. Microstrip patch antennas are well known to have positive features for cost-effective, low profile and broadband. This type of antenna can be used in wide range of applications such as in wireless communications, radar systems, and satellites. Inhibiting characteristics of single patch antenna with low gain and narrow band leads to the research area to have array configuration. Beam steering antennas are the ideal solution for various systems such as traffic control and collision avoidance radar systems. The goal of this work is to design and implement a dual-linear polarization stacked microstrip patch phased array antenna. Single stacked microstrip patch antenna fed by microstrip line was designed to have approximately 3 GHz bandwidth in X-band with another ground plane to form a stripline-fed. Stripline-fed design protects feed lines from any outside effects. The array configuration was adapted to design in order to accomplish beam scan angle of /- 30 degrees by /- 15 degrees. Binomial power distribution of 3x2 array structure was used in order to reduce grating lobes, and changing length of feed lines was implemented for phase shifting. Bowtie cross shape aperture and dual-offset microstrip feedline was used to feed radiating patches. For the feed network, T-split power divider was implemented and optimized to achieve low loss. The length of microstrip line was adjusted to meet desired phase shift that in wideband application, the length of the line had to be long enough to have similar wavelength response over broad frequency range. The antenna array was designed using standard equations and simulated by electromagnetic analysis software called Zealand's IE3D which is method-of-moments based simulator. The resulting measured impedance bandwidth and gain of both microstrip and stripline-fed single antenna are 43 percent and 5 to 10 dBi with low cross polarizations for all frequencies. The array antenna was measured to have 29 to 60 percent impedance bandwidths depending on the different types of beam scan angles. The gain of the array antenna is 8 to 13 dBi, and the beams are directed as required with /- 3 degrees beam scan angle tolerance. The array antenna had a small offset as compared with simulated results because of the fabrication process such as alignment, distorted feed lines while etching, and etc, but the bandwidths and array patterns were acceptable.
