Book Japanese Dentition Anthropology And History

Download or read book Japanese Dentition Anthropology And History written by Eisaku Kanazawa and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the achievements of dental anthropology research in Japan to the people in the world. It starts with the tooth morphology of the people in the Paleolithic Period about 20,000 years ago. Then it goes through Jomon Age and Yayoi Age when the admixture of the people happened. Here the difference of the tooth shape between those two human groups is emphasized. After these ages, Japanese teeth were not the same from age to age influenced by the environment. In the current age of Japan, topics such as third molar agenesis, change of eruption time of the first permanent teeth, mandibular torus, and high canine are discussed. These abnormal conditions in Japan also reflect the characteristic features of Japanese history and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shelley Saunders This book offers a welcome diversity of topics covering the broader subjects of teeth and the study of teeth by anthropologists. There is an impressive array of coverage here including the history of anthropological study of the teeth, morphology and structure, pathology and epidemiology, the relationship between nutrition, human behavior and the dentition, age and sex estimation from teeth, and geographic and genetic variation. Most chapter authors have provided thorough reviews of their subjects along with examples of recent analytical work and recommendations for future research. North American researchers should particularly appreciate the access to an extensive European literature cited in the individual chapter bibliographies. Physical anthropologists with even a passing interest in dental research should greet the publication of this book with pleasure since it adds to a growing list of books on how the study of teeth can tell us so much about past human populations. In addition to the archaeological applications, there is the forensic objective of dental anthropology which the editors refer to in their introduction which is dealt with in this volume. The chapters dealing with methods of sex determination, age estimation of juveniles and age estimation of adults using the teeth are exhaustive and exacting and of critical importance to both "osteoarchaeologists" and forensic anthropologists. Authors Liversidge, Herdeg and Rosing provide very clear guidelines for the use of dental formation standards in juvenile age estimation, recommendations that are so obviously necessary at this time.

Book Japan s Ainu Minority in Tokyo

Download or read book Japan s Ainu Minority in Tokyo written by Mark K. Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-14 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the Ainu, the indigenous people of Japan, living in and around Tokyo; it is, therefore, about what has been pushed to the margins of history. Customarily, anthropologists and public officials have represented Ainu issues and political affairs as limited to rural pockets of Hokkaido. Today, however, a significant proportion of the Ainu people live in and around major cities on the main island of Honshu, particularly Tokyo. Based on extensive original ethnographic research, this book explores this largely unknown diasporic aspect of Ainu life and society. Drawing from debates on place-based rights and urban indigeneity in the twenty-first century, the book engages with the experiences and collective struggles of Tokyo Ainu in seeking to promote a better understanding of their cultural and political identity and sense of community in the city. Looking in-depth for the first time at the urban context of ritual performance, cultural transmission and the construction of places or ‘hubs’ of Ainu social activity, this book argues that recent government initiatives aimed at fostering a national Ainu policy will ultimately founder unless its architects are able to fully recognize the historical and social complexities of the urban Ainu experience.

Book Bioarchaeology of East Asia

Download or read book Bioarchaeology of East Asia written by Kate Pechenkina and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interprets human skeletal collections from a region where millets, rice, and several other important cereals were cultivated, leading to attendant forms of agricultural development that were accompanied by significant technological innovations. The contributors follow the diffusion of these advanced ideas to other parts of Asia, and unravel a maze of population movements. In addition, they explore the biological implications of relatively rare subsistence strategies more or less unique to East Asia: millet agriculture, mobile pastoralism with limited cereal farming, and rice farming combined with reliance on marine resources.

Book excerpt: The site of Man Bac in the Red River Delta of Vietnam, one of the most meticulously excavated and carefully analysed of Southeast Asian archaeological sites in the past few years, is emerging as a key site in the region. This book carefully analyses the human and animal remains and puts them into context. The authors describe in detail the health status, the unusual demographic profile and the interestingly divergent affinities of the cemetery population, and discuss their meaning, particularly in association with evidence for the use of marine and terrestrial animal resources; they argue convincingly that the site documents a time when the face of the region's population was undergoing a fundamental shift, associated with a changing economic subsistence base. Physical anthropologists and archaeologists have argued for years over the timeline, the manner and the very nature of Southeast Asian population history, and this book is essential reading in this debate. Two supporting appendices describe the individual remains in detail.
