Book Optimal Design of Water Distribution Networks

Download or read book Optimal Design of Water Distribution Networks written by Pramod R. Bhave and published by Alpha Science Int'l Ltd.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design of water distribution networks is traditionally based on trial-and-approach in which the designer assumes, based on experience and judgment, sizes of different elements and successively modifies them until a network with satisfactory hydraulic performance is obtained. This text covers: Essential hydraulic, economic optimization principles. Theory is developed gradually for optimal design of simple, single-source branched networks subjected to single loading to complex, multiple-source looped networks subjected to multiple loading. Strengthening and expansion of existing networks and also reliability-based design. Several illustrative examples enabling the reader to apply them in practice- approximately 100 line drawings.

Book A methodology for optimal design of water distribution systems

Download or read book A methodology for optimal design of water distribution systems written by William Francis Rowell and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive methodology for the design of municipal water distribution systems that explicitly incorporates reliability and performance into the system design is developed. The complex design problem is decomposed within the context of a three-level hierarchically integrated system of models. The first and second level models combine to select the links in the distribution system layout. The third level model accomplishes the detailed system design for the layout from the upper level models. Two alternative first level models, a shortest path tree and a nonlinear programming model, are developed to select the minimum cost tree layout. Two second level, complementary 0-1 integer programming models are developed to select the loop-forming links for the minimum cost tree layout. The third level nonlinear programming model optimizes the detailed distribution system design (link diameters, pump capacities, elevated storage heights, and valve resistance) of the resulting network layout with respect to distribution system performance under expected emergency loading conditions (fire demand, broken links, pump outage). This detailed design is performed subject to satisfying steady state conditions, minimum performance levels under normal loading conditions, and maximum budget level. The methodology is applied to the design of a real life water distribution system. (Author).

Book Computationally Intensive Design of Water Distribution Systems

Download or read book Computationally Intensive Design of Water Distribution Systems written by Manuel Alejandro Andrade-Rodriguez and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The burdensome capital cost of urban water distribution systems demands the use of efficient optimization methods capable of finding a relatively inexpensive design that guarantees a minimum functionality under all conditions of operation. The combinatorial and nonlinear nature of the optimization problem involved accepts no definitive method of solution. Adaptive search methods are well fitted for this type of problem (to which more formal methods cannot be applied), but their computational requirements demand the development and implementation of additional heuristics to find a satisfactory solution. This work seeks to employ adaptive search methods to enhance the search process used to find the optimal design of any water distribution system. A first study presented here introduces post-optimization heuristics that analyze the best design obtained by a genetic algorithm--arguably the most popular adaptive search method--and perform an ordered local search to maximize further cost savings. When used to analyze the best design found by a genetic algorithm, the proposed post-optimization heuristics method successfully achieved additional cost savings that the genetic algorithm failed to detect after an exhaustive search. The second study herein explores various ways to improve artificial neural networks employed as fast estimators of computationally intensive constraints. The study presents a new methodology for generating any large set of water supply networks to be used for the training of artificial neural networks. This dataset incorporates several distribution networks in the vicinity of the search space in which the genetic algorithm is expected to focus its search. The incorporation of these networks improved the accuracy of artificial neural networks trained with such a dataset. These neural networks consistently showed a lower margin of error than their counterparts trained with conventional training datasets populated by randomly generated distribution networks.

Book Intelligent Monitoring Control and Security of Critical Infrastructure Systems

Download or read book Intelligent Monitoring Control and Security of Critical Infrastructure Systems written by Elias Kyriakides and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-13 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the challenges that critical infrastructure systems face, and presents state of the art solutions to address them. How can we design intelligent systems or intelligent agents that can make appropriate real-time decisions in the management of such large-scale, complex systems? What are the primary challenges for critical infrastructure systems? The book also provides readers with the relevant information to recognize how important infrastructures are, and their role in connection with a society’s economy, security and prosperity. It goes on to describe state-of-the-art solutions to address these points, including new methodologies and instrumentation tools (e.g. embedded software and intelligent algorithms) for transforming and optimizing target infrastructures. The book is the most comprehensive resource to date for professionals in both the private and public sectors, while also offering an essential guide for students and researchers in the areas of modeling and analysis of critical infrastructure systems, monitoring, control, risk/impact evaluation, fault diagnosis, fault-tolerant control, and infrastructure dependencies/interdependencies. The importance of the research presented in the book is reflected in the fact that currently, for the first time in human history, more people live in cities than in rural areas, and that, by 2050, roughly 70% of the world’s total population is expected to live in cities.

Book Global Optimization in Engineering Design

Download or read book Global Optimization in Engineering Design written by Ignacio E. Grossmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Programming has been of significant interest and relevance in engineering, an area that is very rich in challenging optimization problems. In particular, many design and operational problems give rise to nonlinear and mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems whose modeling and solu tion is often nontrivial. Furthermore, with the increased computational power and development of advanced analysis (e. g. , process simulators, finite element packages) and modeling systems (e. g. , GAMS, AMPL, SPEEDUP, ASCEND, gPROMS), the size and complexity of engineering optimization models is rapidly increasing. While the application of efficient local solvers (nonlinear program ming algorithms) has become widespread, a major limitation is that there is often no guarantee that the solutions that are generated correspond to global optima. In some cases finding a local solution might be adequate, but in others it might mean incurring a significant cost penalty, or even worse, getting an incorrect solution to a physical problem. Thus, the need for finding global optima in engineering is a very real one. It is the purpose of this monograph to present recent developments of tech niques and applications of deterministic approaches to global optimization in engineering. The present monograph is heavily represented by chemical engi neers; and to a large extent this is no accident. The reason is that mathematical programming is an active and vibrant area of research in chemical engineering. This trend has existed for about 15 years.
