Book excerpt: In this work a method is developed for modeling frequency domain error in dynamic systems with parametric uncertainty. Within any mass-manufactured dynamic system, parameters such as masses, springs or geometrical attributes can vary from one system to the next. Overall performance or stability of the system can therefore be a function of the extent of uncertainty within the physical parameters. In typical robust control designs, uncertainty models work to account for all possible error within the system. The error modeling approach presented here is unique in that only a fraction of possible error is represented by the model. Validation of the uncertainty modeling technique was completed on a pilot operated proportional control valve. Thirty replications of the pilot stage of the proportional control valve were obtained and tested with one main stage. An uncertainty model which takes into account only a fraction of error is formed based on simulated frequency response data from an analytical model. A comparison is presented of two different control designs, a mixed sensitivity H-infinity and a proportional controller. The controllers are implemented in a closed-loop experimental setup in which all 30 pilot valves were retested. This study is shown to verify the ability of the robustness analysis utilizing the uncertainty model to approximate the probability of a system obtaining performance or stability specifications given parametric uncertainty within the system.

The growing interest in this area arises out of the need to develop computationally efficient approaches to predict the evolution of a system subject to uncertainties. To this end, this dissertation is focused on developing computational frameworks for uncertainty propagation, control, and state estimation of stochastic dynamical systems using the generalized polynomial chaos (gPC) expansion technique.In the first part of this dissertation, the construction of gPC expansion is presented in general. The novelty of this dissertation lies in developing a mixed sparse grid quadrature technique to carry out computationally efficient uncertainty propagation in dynamical systems wherein the random variables are governed by different (or a mixture of) probability distribution types. Additionally, the proposed quadrature technique in the gPC expansion framework is utilized to study the sensitivity of the system output to the uncertain input variables. Subsequently, this work integrates the idea of uncertainty propagation with those of model data-fusion and optimal control theory for state estimation and robust control, respectively, of stochastic systems subject to parametric uncertainties. Furthermore, the stability margin of a group of cooperative unmanned vehicles is examined in a multi-agent system setting. In this regard, a unified framework is proposed to study the consensus of multi-agent systems with multiplicative uncertainties in the feedback path of agents. The proposed technique provides performance indices that measure the robustness of the networked group of agents to gain, phase, and input delay perturbations. Finally, the dissertation studies the consensus problems in multi-agent systems wherein the information exchange between the agents is affected by non-uniform time-varying delays in the network.The proposed frameworks are applied to various benchmark problems and real world applications, including the motion of satellites in low-Earth orbits, aeroelastic systems, hypersonic reentry of a spacecraft to Earth, synchronization in the states of short-period dynamics of aircraft, among others.

Currently, there is no successful design method for this class of systems in the literature. One common alterna tive consists of linearizing the nonlinear dynamical stochastic system in the neighborhood of an operating point and then using the techniques for linear systems to design the controller. The resulting model is in general an approximation of the real behavior of a dynamical system. The inclusion of the uncertainties in the model is therefore necessary and will certainly improve the performance of the dynamical system we want to control. The control of uncertain systems has attracted a lot of researchers from the control community. This topic has in fact dominated the research effort of the control community during the last two decades, and many contributions have been reported in the literature. Some practical dynamical systems have time delay in their dynamics, which makes their control a complicated task even in the deterministic case. Recently, the class ofuncertain dynamical deterministic systems with time delay has attracted some researchers, and some interesting results have been reported in both deterministic and stochastic cases. But wecan't claim that the control problem ofthis class ofsystems is completely solved; more work must be done for this class of systems.

A necessary and sufficient condition for robust stability in terms of the structured singular value p is obtained, based on a finite augmentation of the original problem. The augmentation corresponds to considering the system at a fixed number of frequencies. Sufficient conditions based on scaled small-gain are also considered and characterized. A substantial amount of research in recent years has been devoted to analysis and synthesis of control systems o achieve robust stability and performance in the presence of structured uncertainty. This implies a decentralized nature of the uncertain perturbation, which is a reasonable modeling choice for complex systems, where uncertainty may be introduced at the subsystem level (see Safonov [17] and Doyle [5] for early treatments of this). In addition t o this "spatial" structure, different assumptions can be made on the dynamic properties of the uncertainty: real parametric, linear time invariant (LTI), linear time varying (LTV) or nonlinear perturbations.
