This chapter deals with ion exchange deionization and the effect of resin amount as well as the concentration of acid and base on the product conductivity. The strong acidic cation polymeric exchanger resin is commercially called MERCK 104765 cation exchanger IV with capacity greater than 3.2 mmol/ml, while the strong basic anion polymeric exchanger resin is commercially called MERCK 104767 anion exchanger III with capacities greater than 1.0 mmol/ml. Water conductivity, as an indicator of regeneration efficiency, was monitored over time at the different conditions and scenario. In general, it was observed that the conductivity decreases with time until one point is reached and then starts to increase as a result of resin saturation. It was also noticed that the lowest conductivity is achieved when using 1-vol% NaOH and 5-vol% HCl in the cathodic and anodic resin tubes, respectively, and that water conductivity increases with the increase in the amount of water being used. The amount of resin significantly impacts the deionization efficiency; more ions are removed as the amount of resin increases.

Book excerpt: The feasibility of wastewater demineralization by ion exchange procedures was successfully demonstrated by pilot plant studies conducted on sewage effluent from an activated sludge treatment plant. A pretreatment unit consisting of lime clarification, dual media filtration, and granular activated carbon filtration was operated in series with the ion exchange system. Phosphate reductions were achieved by lime clarification at pH 10.0, but identical reductions were achieved by ion exchange alone. In addition ion exchange treatment without lime was cheaper. Ion exchange processes using strong acid cation exchange resin and weak base anion exchange resin can be readily applied to wastewater demineralization. Design of treatment plants for such a process applied to wastewater containing as much as 500 mg/l of ionizable solids can use established design parameters. Disposal of sludges and saline liquids must be considered.

Book excerpt: Laboratory scale investigations were conducted to determine why the operating capacity of the ion exchange demineralization system utilized to recycle electroplating rinse waters at Oklahoma City Air Material Area, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma had decreased by over 50% in approximately 18 months of operation. Total capacity and continuous flow experiments revealed irreversible absorption of trivalent metals on the cation resin; irreversible exchange, by normal regeneration techniques, of para nitrobenzene, sulfonic acid on the anion resin; and oxidation of the strong base functional groups. Physical plugging of the ion exchange resins from sediment in the process water and calcium sulfate precipitation were identified as contributing to the reduced capacity. Based on laboratory results recommendations are made to change the cation regenerant from sulfuric acid to hydrochloric acid and to periodically regenerate the anion resin with caustized brine. Other recommendations are made concerning system operation. (Author).
