Book A Method for Obtaining Empirical Correlations for Predicting Crack Propagation in a Burning Solid Propellant Grain

Download or read book A Method for Obtaining Empirical Correlations for Predicting Crack Propagation in a Burning Solid Propellant Grain written by Jeffrey A. Nimis and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of crack propagation in solid rocket motors is widely recognized. However, the processes of crack propagation and branching in burning solid propellants are not as yet well understood. These processes could be instrumental in creating large specific surface areas for burning causing rocket motor failure. Key factors influencing the crack combustion, propagation and branching process considered in the dimensional analysis include chamber pressurization rate, initial crack length, initial temperature, sample geometry, and mechanical and thermal properties of the solid propellant. Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Oata Analysis and Synthesis (CINOAS) * at Purdue. University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 33 (thesis year 1988) a total of 13,273 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 1 85 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 33 reports theses submitted in 1988, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Modeling of Crack Initiation and Growth in Solid Rocket Propellants Using Macromechanics and Micromechanics Theories

Download or read book Modeling of Crack Initiation and Growth in Solid Rocket Propellants Using Macromechanics and Micromechanics Theories written by James H. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modeling and simulation of crack initiation and propagation in solid rocket propellant materials were conducted using both the macromechanics approach and the micro/macromechanics approach. Due to their composition, the solid rocket propellant can be construed as particle reinforced composites. The macromechanics approach entailed a numerical simulation of a finite element model to predict the crack behavior based on the damage initiation, growth, and local saturation. Its results were then compared to the experimental data. In the simulation, it was assumed that a crack forms when a damage is saturated in a localized zone. The results from the simulation were quite comparable to the experimental results, validating the method of predicting crack initiation, growth, and arrest using the concept of damage growth and saturation. The second approach involved using a simplified micromechanical model and the damage mechanics being applied at the micromechanics level and the finite element analysis being done subsequently at the macromechanics level. In using this approach, the damage modes such as matrix cracking, interface debonding and particle cracking were explainable in an explicit fundamental manner. Several simulations were conducted using this approach including the cases of non- uniform particle distribution. The predicted results compared well with the experimental data.

Book Determination of Optimum Length of End Release for Case Bonded Solid Propellant Rocket Motors

Download or read book Determination of Optimum Length of End Release for Case Bonded Solid Propellant Rocket Motors written by L. Dale Webb and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of predicting crack-type failures in composite solid rocket propellant grains has been a continuing one. The usual practice has been to use one of the classical failure theories to extrapolate the failure data collected from laboratory tests to the motor grain. Just which theory to use generally depends upon the stress state at the point being considered and the previous experience of the analyst. A new unifying approach based upon fracture mechanics is considered and evaluated both analytically and experimentally. The analytics illustrate the use of the numerical stiffness programs to compute the total strain energy in various grain-like configurations with different crack lengths and locations. The experiments were conducted to confirm the existence of a characteristic strain energy release rate for cracks propagating through propellants. Taken together, the growth of both cohesive cracks in the propellant grain and adhesive cracks along a grain-case interface can be predicted. The results reported indicate that the method may prove to be quite sensitive both for predicting the onset of grain cracking and for adjusting the design parameters to minimize the tendency for fracturing to begin. Book Transient Combustion in Solid Propellant Cracks

Download or read book Transient Combustion in Solid Propellant Cracks written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-dimensional theoretical model, incorporating the Noble-Abel dense gas law, has been developed to describe the transient model combustion phenomena inside a propellant crack. The theoretical model can be used to predict wave phenomena, heat transfer from the gas to the propellant surface and associated thermal penetration, flame propagation, and resultant pressurization at various locations along the propellant cavity. Calculations made with the current theoretical model revealed that the internal pressurization rate, pressure gradient, and flame velocity in propellant cracks (for which gases can penetrate) decrease as: the gap width increases, the rocket chamber pressurization rate decreases, and the propellant gasification temperature increases. Additionally, the predicted flame spreading was found to decelerate in a region near the crack tip; this phenomena has been experimentally observed by others.

Book Prediction of Crack Initiation and Growth in Solid Propellants

Download or read book Prediction of Crack Initiation and Growth in Solid Propellants written by E. Gdoutos and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking Democritus University of Thrace as follows: The contractor will investigate crack initiation and growth in solid propellant grains. Solid propellants are critical to missile, launch vehicle and satellite upper stage performance. Cracks in solid propellant can cause catastrophic failures leading to loss of valuable USAF assets and even lives. Understanding these phenomena is important to their future applications.
