This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: IV.?MONKISH TIMES. silent life of prayer, Praise, fast, and alms, and leaving for the cowl The helmet in an abbey far away. The Holy Grail. TllE Norman Survey, or Domesday Book, prepared in the eleventh century, has a long chapter, headed, Terra Sanctie Maritz Glastinburiensis, in which, among the possessions of the rich abbey of Glastonbury, the manor of Winscombe is included. It was given to the monks by Queen Elswithe, under Dunstan's influence, about A.D. 970, and remained in their possession about 250 years. How it came to the Dean and Chapter of Wells is a curious piece of ecclesiastical history. When Richard Cceur de Lion was captured in Austria, on his return from Palestine, and kept prisoner by the Emperor Henry VI., The Monks of. Glastonbury. 47 the Chancellor Sabaric or Savaricus, a cousin of the Emperor's, obtained from the captive king, in return for various services, the promise of the bishopric of Bath. Not content with this, he persuaded the Emperor to demand, as a condition of the king's release, that the abbey of Glastonbury should be added to the bishopric, making the see Bath and Glastonbury. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Mendip Valley, Its Inhabitants and Surroundings: Being an Enlarged and Illustrated Edition of Winscombe Sketches The Second Edition of winscombe sketches having been some time exhausted, an opportunity has been given for enlarging and revising the work, and issuing it in an illustrated form, and under a new title. The illustrations will speak for themselves. They have been a labour of love, like the rest of the book. I have also to thank Professor Lloyd Morgan for his kindness in freely offering to contribute a paper on the Geology of the Mendips, and for the interesting chapter from his practised pen. To Canon Church, the sub - dean of Wells, I am indebted for an inspection of the Register in the Cathedral Library, from which the history of Winscombe Church has been corrected. References to other friends and neighbours will be found in the body of the work. The delay in publication having been occasioned by the illustrations exceeding the number expected, will not, I trust.
