Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Memoir of the Late Mr. William Gadsby It is much to be regretted that Mr. Gadsby did not commit to writing a Memoir of his own life and experience. The ordinary incidents of life indeed may, so far as they can be recovered, be traced by another hand; but whose pen can adequately describe experience but the author's own? Several circumstances seem to have concurred to prevent him being his own biographer. One, and perhaps the most prevalent of them, was the long mental affliction of his partner in life. He could not write an honest and faithful account of his experience after this severe visitation without introducing many circumstances closely connected with this, as he often termed it, "torturing" affliction. Many papers too were either lost or destroyed through her peculiar propensity to put out of the way whatever was most valued by him; and as nothing could be locked up without exciting the very disposition which it was most desirable to repress, he could commit nothing to paper without the fear of its too soon being consigned to the fire. He felt too, and has been heard to express, that an account of experience should be perfectly faithful in order to be really what it professes to be. And this be knew was in most cases nearly impossible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book High Calvinists in Action

Download or read book High Calvinists in Action written by Ian J. Shaw and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2003-02-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable contribution to the debate about the relation of religion to the modern city fills an important gap in the historiography of early nineteenth-century religious life. Although there is some evidence that strict doctrine led to a more restricted response to urban problems, extensive local and personal variations mean that simple generalizations should be avoided. Ian J.Shaw argues against earlier prejudiced views and shows that high Calvinists played a vigorous and successful part in the response of early nineteenth-century churches to the process of urbanization. The study includes six substantial case studies of ministers and their churches in Manchester and London. Four high Calvinist ministers are considered, with two studies of ministers holding to an evangelical Calvinist doctrine also included to provide instructive contrasts. Detailed social analysis of the congregations is based upon extensive use of manuscript and printed sources, sermons, and local and denominational press.

Book Testimony and Tradition

Book excerpt: Internationally recognised for his scholarship in the philosophy of religion and Christian Doctrine, and for his ecclesiastical connections as former Theological Secretary of the Geneva-based World Alliance of Reformed Churches, the Reformed theologian Alan Sell has an established reputation amongst theologians, church and intellectual historians, ecumenists, and ministers of religion. This collection of Alan Sell's work on the Reformed and Dissenting traditions - which includes the Presbyterian, Congregational and United Reformed Church - spans key doctrinal, philosophical, ethical, historical and ecumenical topics. The author illuminates central themes within the history and thought of the Reformed and Dissenting traditions including: the catholicity of the Church and danger of sectarianism, the importance of church meeting, the centrality of the Cross in Christian thought, the need for a viable Christian apologetic. Alan Sell also includes the only modern study of Henry Grove and papers on Andrew Fuller and P. T. Forsyth, in whose work there is currently a revival of interest. With growing interest world wide in the Reformed family, which is the third largest Christian world communion, this book offers an invaluable resource.

Book Evangelicals and Social Action

Download or read book Evangelicals and Social Action written by Ian J. Shaw and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evangelical Christians around the world have debated for years the extent to which they should be involved in ministries of social action and concern. In Evangelicals and Social Action Ian J. Shaw offers clarity to these debates by tracing the historical involvement of the evangelical church with issues of social action. Focusing on thinking and practices from John Wesley, one of the architects of eighteenth century evangelicalism, to John Stott's work in the second half of the twentieth century, he explores whether evangelism and social action really have been intimately related throughout the history of the church as Stott contended. After an overview of Christian social action prior to Wesley, from the early church through to the eighteenth century, Evangelicals and Social Action explores in detail responses from the evangelical church around the world to eighteen key issues of social action and concern - including poverty, racial equality, addiction, children 'at risk,' slavery, unemployment, and learning disability - encountered between the 1730s and the 1970s. Drawn from a wide range of contexts, these examples illuminate and clarify how Evangelical Christianity has viewed and been a part of ministries of social action over the last three centuries. With an assessment of the issues raised by this historical survey and its implications for evangelicals in the contemporary world, Evangelicals and Social Action is a book that will help better inform the debates around the evangelical church and social action still happening today. This is a book for anyone wanting to deepen their knowledge of the history of the evangelical church, and anyone wanting to better understand Christian social action from an evangelical perspective.
