Book Honore de Balzac

Download or read book Honore de Balzac written by Mary F. Sandars and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac: His Life and Writings Although it was published nine years ago, Miss Mary F. Sandars's "Balzac" remains a valuable piece of work, and I am extremely glad that it has been thought advisable to reproduce it in a new shape. It is a useful book for many reasons. In the first place it gives, without too lengthy criticism of particular works of Balzac, a most readable account of a complicated and interesting life. In the next place it is based on those "Lettres a I'Etrangere" which Balzac wrote to his Polish friend Madame Hanska, in the absence of which we have no means of ascertaining the inner life of the distinguished author. Books like those of Sir Frederick Wedmore in the "Great Writers" Series, or Miss Wormeley's Memoir, have become out of date. Mr. Saintsbury's various critical notices retain their original value, but, of course, the real source of much of our present knowledge is due to the collections of M. de Spoelberch de Lovenjoul together with various pamphlets replete with all the conscientious zeal of a thoroughgoing admirer. As Miss Sandars herself notes, Dr. George Brandes has written some valuable chapters in one of the volumes of his "Main Currents of Nineteenth-Century Literature," which, however, do not deal with the details of the novelist's life, but rather with the position which he holds in modern literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac IF it be true of Moliere that he was not only the greatest of comic authors, but comedy itself, it may be said of Balzac that he was not only the greatest, the most fertile and diverse of our novelists, but the novel itself; and the object of the present volume is to show that in saying this I say nothing but the ah solute and exact truth. For this reason the reader is requested not to seek in the follow ing pages a biography of Honore de Balzac, or what to-day goes by that name - infor mation about his origin, anecdotes of his college days, the tittle-tattle of his love-affairs, and the tedious narrative of his quarrels with newspapers or publishers - but solely a study of his work: a study in which, of course, I do not refrain from speaking, when necessary, of the man and of the romance of his life, but Wherein I wish especially to define, to ex plain, and to characterise his work - which, in my opinion, would remain the same if Balzac, instead of being born in Tours, had been born, for instance, in Castelnaudary, and if, in place of studying law, he had studied medicine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Honore De Balzac Balzac's short stories, which we call in French nouvelles, are, generally speaking, not the best-known or the most popular part of his work; nor are they the part best fitted to give a true and complete idea of his genius. But some of them are none the less masterpieces in their kind; they have characteristics and a significance not always possessed by their author's long novels, such as Eugenie Grandet or Cousin Pons; and finally, for this very reason, they hold in the unfinished structure of The Human Comedy a place which it will be interesting to try to determine. That is all that will be attempted in this Introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Correspondence of Honoré De Balzac, Vol. 2 of 2: With a Memoir by His Sister Madame De Surville I cannot preach any longer, for I must go to work; I have so much to do! In the space of a month I have to get through what would take others a year and more. I talk to you about myself, because I hope you will talk to me only of yourself. We can thus exchange our thoughts. I went out yesterday on urgent business, and I saw my two caricatures by Dantan. Send to Susse for them. You will tell me if they are not droll. In a few days I am to sit to an artist, who has asked me to let him take my portrait. I have had the weakness to consent. Is not all this very little? It seems still more so when one has just been raised to heaven among the mystics. That great idea of Woman promised in the preface, which you find so attractive, is half realised. It is called Le Lys dans la Vallée.' Perhaps I deceive myself, but I imagine it will draw forth many tears. I have surprised myself in tears whilst writing it. This work will be the last of the Etudes philosophiques.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Honore De Balzac, Vol. 19: Seraphita; Jesus Christ in Flanders; The Exiles; Memoir IT is highly probable that Seraphita cost its author more than any other of his intellectual offspring. The evidence of this appears in his correspondence. Writing to Madame Zulma Garrand in January, 1834, he says, Seraphita is a work more severe than any other upon the writer What he thought of it may be gathered from another passage in the same letter, in which he speaks of it as a work as much beyond Louis Lam bert' as Louis Lambert' is beyond Gaudissart.' As he proceeded with it his labor became more intense. In March, 1835, writing to the Duchesse de Castries, he says: The toil upon this work has been crushing and terrible. I have passed, and must still pass, days and nights upon it. I compose, decompose, and recom pose it. He did not delude himself as to the kind of reception it was likely to encounter: In a few days, he Observes, all will have been said. Either I shall have won fame or the Parisians will have failed to understand me. And inasmuch as, with them, mockery commonly takes the place of understanding, I can hope only for a remote and tardy success. Eventually appre ciation will come, and at once here and there.
