Book A Grammar of South Efate

Download or read book A Grammar of South Efate written by Nicholas Thieberger and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2006-07-31 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents topics in the grammar of South Efate, an Oceanic language of Central Vanuatu as spoken in Erakor village on the outskirts of PortVila. It is one of the first such grammars to take seriously the provision of primary data for the verification of claims made in the analysis. The research is set in the context of increasing attention being paid to the state of the world’s smaller languages and their prospects for being spoken into the future. In addition to providing an outline of the grammar of the language, the author describes the process of developing an archivable textual corpus that is used to make example sentences citable and playable, using software (Audiamus) developed in the course of the research. An included DVD provides a dictionary and finderlist, a set of interlinearized example texts and elicited sentences, and playable media versions of most example sentences and of the example texts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in German in 1923, this work records much of Vanuatu's early material culture. It is the result of two years of field work by Swiss anthropologist Felix Speiser between 1910 and 1912. Speiser attempted to collect everything that could still be obtained of the objects constituting Vanuatu's native culture. Ethnology of Vanuatu presents culturally and historically significant photographs and drawings by Speiser assembled during the expedition, along with color photos taken in the Basel Museum, which, taken together, represent the Speiser collection. Through the use of Speiser's collection of cultural photographs and illustrations, it has been possible to revive certain art forms thought to have already vanished.

Book Music Lapita and the Problem of Polynesian Origins

Download or read book Music Lapita and the Problem of Polynesian Origins written by Mervyn McLean and published by Mervyn McLean. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than twenty years the standard view among anthropologists has been that Polynesians evolved from a group of settlers known as Lapita people whose characteristically dentate-stamped pottery has been found on numerous mostly Melanesian sites, and who entered Fiji more than 3000 years ago from a starting point in the Bismarck Archipelago. An alternative view that champions Micronesia as a primary area of origin for Polynesians has been in limbo as a result of the prevailing theory, but is reappraised in the present book and found once again to be in contention. The book takes an historical view of theories of origin, and provides some account of methodologies used by scholarly disciplines which have been brought to bear on the subject, including evidence from music and dance, which forms the core of the book.
