Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in both English and Arabic, Ahmed Ibn Hanbal and the Mihna is the biography of the famous and beloved Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, who is credited with having founded the Hanbali school of fiqh, or jurisprudence. Hanbal was most well-known for his association with the Mihna, an event in Islamic history where an Abassid Caliph named al-Ma'mun tried to assert his authority and test whether his Muslim subjects believed that the Qu'ran was created by God or uncreated and literally the words of God himself. Though those who rejected the idea that the Qu'ran was created were imprisoned and flogged, Hanbal did not back down and supported his view that it was not, serving as a symbol of strength and character to many Muslims. This biography includes the account of the Mihna, as well as Hanbal's family history and accomplishments. WALTER MELVILLE PATTON (1863-1928)was born in Montreal, Province of Canada, to James Patton and Margaret Mathewson. In addition to writing a biography of the Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, he also wrote a short history of the beginning of Israel, following the first eleven chapters of Genesis in the Bible.

Book Ahmad Ibn Hanbal

Download or read book Ahmad Ibn Hanbal written by Christopher Melchert and published by Oneworld Academic. This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Melchert examines the forefather of the fourth of the four principal Sunni schools of jurisprudence, the Hanbali. Upholding the view that the Qur'an was uncreated and the direct word of God, Ahmad ibn Hanbal (780-855) thought that the holy text should be read literally, rejecting any possibility for metaphorical or revisionist interpretation. Melchert assesses the importance of ibn Hanbal's teachings and analyses their relevance in modern Sunni Islam.

Book The Suffering of the Ahl ul Bayt and their Followers Shia throughout History

This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imam Baqir (as) said "Since the death of the Holy Prophet (s) we Ahl ul bayt have been humiliated, made distant and have been deprived and killed and made to leave our home town and we felt frightened for our blood and the blood of our followers. The cheaters, through their lies, got nearer to the leaders, judges and governors in every city and our enemies told false and invalid traditions relating to their past leaders and quoted narrations that we had never told. They only wanted to humiliate us and wanted to accuse us of falsehood, and wanted to get nearer to their leaders through lies. After the passing away of Hassan (a.s) this became very common during the time of Muawiyah. At that time, in every city, Shias were killed, their hands and feet were cut off and they were hanged on accusations of their being near to us and talking about their love for us."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was the name of Noah's son who did not survive the Flood? Why do Pharaoh and Haman build the Tower of Babel? For what reasons does Moses travel to the ends of the Earth? Who is the 'Horned-One' who holds back Gog and Magog until the Day of Judgement? These are some of the questions answered in the oral sources and Quran commentaries on the stories of the prophets as they are understood by Muslims. Designed as an introduction to the Quran with particular emphasis on parallels with Biblical tradition, this book provides a concise but detailed overview of Muslim prophets from Adam to Muhammad. Each of the chapters is organized around a particular prophet, including an English translation of the relevant verses of the Quran and a wide selection of classical, medieval and modern Muslim commentaries on those verses. Quran commentaries include references to Sunni and Shi'i sources from Spain, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa. An extensive glossary provides an annotated list of all scholarly transmitters and cited texts with suggestions for further reading. This is an excellent book for undergraduate courses, and students in divinity and seminary programmes. Comparisons between the Quran and Bible, and among Jewish, Christian and Islamic exegesis are highlighted. Oral sources, references adapted from apocryphal and pseudepigraphical works, and inter-religious dialogue are all evident throughout these stories of the prophets. This material shows how the Quran and its interpretation are integral to a fuller and more discerning understanding of the Bible and its place in the history of Western religion.

Book The Muslim Jesus

  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2003-04-30
  • ISBN : 0674254872
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book The Muslim Jesus written by and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-30 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents in English translation the largest collection ever assembled of the sayings and stories of Jesus in Arabic Islamic literature. In doing so, it traces a tradition of love and reverence for Jesus that has characterized Islamic thought for more than a thousand years. An invaluable resource for the history of religions, the collection documents how one culture, that of Islam, assimilated the towering religious figure of another, that of Christianity. As such, it is a work of great significance for the understanding of both, and of profound implications for modern-day intersectarian relations and ecumenical dialogue. Tarif Khalidi's introduction and commentaries place the sayings and stories in their historical context, showing how and why this "gospel" arose and the function it served within Muslim devotion. The Jesus that emerges here is a compelling figure of deep and life-giving spirituality. The sayings and stories, some 300 in number and arranged in chronological order, show us how the image of this Jesus evolved throughout a millennium of Islamic history.
