Book Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Inclusive Charged Current Cross Section on Iron Using the MINOS Detector

Download or read book Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Inclusive Charged Current Cross Section on Iron Using the MINOS Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) produces an intense muon neutrino beam used by the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS), a neutrino oscillation experiment, and the Main INjector ExpeRiment v-A, (MINERv A), a neutrino interaction experiment. Absolute neutrino cross sections are determined via [sigma]v = N v/[Phi]v, where the numerator is the measured number of neutrino interactions in the MINOS Detector and the denominator is the flux of incident neutrinos. Many past neutrino experiments have measured relative cross sections due to a lack of precise measurements of the incident neutrino flux, normalizing to better established reaction processes, such as quasielastic neutrino-nucleon scattering. But recent measurements of neutrino interactions on nuclear targets have brought to light questions about our understanding of nuclear effects in neutrino interactions. In this thesis the v[mu] inclusive charged current cross section on iron is measured using the MINOS Detector. The MINOS detector consists of alternating planes of steel and scintillator. The MINOS detector is optimized to measure muons produced in charged current v[mu] interactions. Along with muons, these interactions produce hadronic showers. The neutrino energy is measured from the total energy the particles deposit in the detector. The incident neutrino flux is measured using the muons produced alongside the neutrinos in meson decay. Three ionization chamber monitors located in the downstream portion of the NuMI beamline are used to measure the muon flux and thereby infer the neutrino flux by relation to the underlying pion and kaon meson flux. This thesis describes the muon flux instrumentation in the NuMI beam, its operation over the two year duration of this measurement, and the techniques used to derive the neutrino flux.

Book Measurement of the Charged current Quasi elastic Cross section for Electron Neutrinos on a Hydrocarbon Target

Download or read book Measurement of the Charged current Quasi elastic Cross section for Electron Neutrinos on a Hydrocarbon Target written by Jeremy Wolcott and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We report herein the first-ever measurement of a cross-section for an exclusive state in electron neutrino scattering at the GeV scale, which was made using the MINERvA detector in the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab. We present the electron neutrino CCQE differential cross-sections, which are averaged over neutrinos of energies 1-10 GeV (with mean energy of about 3 GeV), in terms of various kinematic variables: final-state electron angle, final-state electron energy, and the square of the four-momentum transferred to the nucleus by the neutrino, Q2. We also provide a total cross-section vs. neutrino energy. While our measurement of this process is found to be in agreement with the predictions of the GENIE event generator, we also report on an unpredicted photon-like process we observe in a similar kinematic regime. The absence of this process from models for neutrino interactions is a potential stumbling block for future on-axis neutrino oscillation experiments. We include kinematic and particle species identification characterizations which can be used in building models to help address this shortcoming"--Page vi.

Book Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Charged Current Inclusive Cross Sections with the MINERvA Detector

Download or read book Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Charged Current Inclusive Cross Sections with the MINERvA Detector written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos are a nearly massless, neutral particle in the Standard Model that only interact via the weak interaction. Experimental confirmation of neutrino oscillations, in which a neutrino created as a particular type (electron, muon or tau) can be observed as a different type after propagating some distance, earned the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. Neutrino oscillation experiments rely on accurate measurements of neutrino interactions with matter, such as that presented here. Neutrinos also provide a unique probe of the nucleus, complementary to electron scattering experiments. This thesis presents a measurement of the charged-current inclusive cross section for muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the energy range 2 to 50 GeV with the MINERvA detector. MINERvA is a neutrino scattering experiment in the NuMI neutrino beam at Fermilab, near Chicago. A cross section measures the probability of an interaction occurring, measured here as a function of neutrino energy. To extract a cross section from data, the observed rate of interactions is corrected for detector efficiency and divided by the number of scattering nucleons in the target and the flux of neutrinos in the beam. The neutrino flux is determined with the low-$\nu$ method, which relies on the principle that the cross section for interactions with very low recoil energy is nearly constant as a function of neutrino energy. The measured cross section is compared with world data.

Book A First Measurement of the Interaction Cross section of the Tau Neutrino

Download or read book A First Measurement of the Interaction Cross section of the Tau Neutrino written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The DONuT experiment collected data in 1997 and published first results in 2000 based on four observed [nu]{sub {tau}} charged-current (CC) interactions. The final analysis of the data collected in the experiment is presented in this paper, based on 3.6 x 1017 protons on target using the 800 GeV Tevatron beam at Fermilab. The number of observed [nu]{sub {tau}} CC interactions is 9, from a total of 578 observed neutrino interactions. We calculated the energy-independent part of the tau-neutrino CC cross section ([nu] + {bar [nu]}), relative to the well-known [nu]{sub e} and [nu]{sub {mu}} cross sections. The ratio [sigma]([nu]{sub {tau}})/[sigma]([nu]{sub e, {mu}}) was found to be 1.37 ± 0.35 ± 0.77. The {nu}{sub {tau}} CC cross section was found to be 0.72 ± 0.24 ± 0.36 x 10−38 cm2 GeV−1. Both results are in agreement with expectations from the Standard Model.

Book Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Interactions and the Muon Neutrino Single Pion Cross Section on CH Using the T2K Near Detector

Download or read book Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Interactions and the Muon Neutrino Single Pion Cross Section on CH Using the T2K Near Detector written by Raquel Castillo Fernández and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book First Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Quasielastic Double Differential Cross Section

Download or read book First Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Quasielastic Double Differential Cross Section written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-statistics sample of charged-current muon neutrino scattering events collected with the MiniBooNE experiment is analyzed to extract the first measurement of the double differential cross section (d2?/dT{sub {mu}}d cos?{sub {mu}}) for charged-current quasielastic (CCQE) scattering on carbon. This result features minimal model dependence and provides the most complete information on this process to date. With the assumption of CCQE scattering, the absolute cross section as a function of neutrino energy (?[E{sub {nu}}]) and the single differential cross section (d?/dQ2) are extracted to facilitate comparison with previous measurements. These quantities may be used to characterize an effective axial-vector form factor of the nucleon and to improve the modeling of low-energy neutrino interactions on nuclear targets. The results are relevant for experiments searching for neutrino oscillations.

Book An Improved Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Quasi elastic Cross section on Hydrocarbon at Minerva

Download or read book An Improved Measurement of the Muon Neutrino Charged Current Quasi elastic Cross section on Hydrocarbon at Minerva written by Dun Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrino interactions in the detectors of long baseline oscillation experiments are analyzed to determine the neutrino flavor and energy spectrum, allowing the neutrino mass ordering and mixing parameters to be determined. For neutrino interactions below the pion production threshold, the dominant reaction is charged current quasi-elastic (CCQE) scattering. Oscillation experiments are made of heavy nuclei so the QE process occurs on nucleons that are embedded in the nuclear environment. Predictions of the QE cross-section suffer from significant uncertainties due to our understanding of that nuclear environment and the way it is probed by the weak interaction. I have developed a new technique to reduce the inelastic background to CCQE process by identifying the "Michel electrons" produced by pions. Additionally an updated neutrino flux was used to extract the cross-section and estimates for some sources of systematic uncertainties have been improved. The measured cross-section is compared to several theoretical models and the effect that the signal definition ("CCQE" vs "CCQE-like") has on the measurement is also explored.
